    13 July 2020 OPEN LETTER TO G20 FINANCE MINISTERS Global business, workers and civil society call for comprehensive emergency debt relief to enable developing countries to combat the COVID-19 pandemic Dear Finance Ministers, We are writing further to our joint letter sent on 10 April 2020, which called on G20 Governments to take international debt out of the equation in the fight against COVID-19 ahead of the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group (WBG) and International Monetary Fund (IMF). On behalf of business, workers and civil society throughout the world, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your leadership in establishing the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI)—and, moreover, applaud the commitment made by several governments to replenish the IMF Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust (CCRT) and Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust. For the real economy and society at large, this package of measures was a welcome signal of the G20’s overarching commitment to eliminate any risk of disorderly sovereign debt crises compounding the human and economic toll of COVID-19. It is increasingly clear, however, that your leadership is urgently required to decisively deliver on this imperative. With the global economy facing an even deeper downturn than projected in April, decisive and comprehensive action is now needed to ensure that debt service does not prevent developing economy governments from protecting the lives and livelihoods of their citizens in the face of the pandemic. We are especially concerned by the growing number of countries already facing or at risk of debt distress—including many countries that are not currently within the scope of the DSSI, whose economies have been highly exposed to the external shocks precipitated by COVID-19.

Bl eyen Myrthel Van Etterbeeck 2011-2012 ABSTRACT Wereldoorlog I gaf in Groot Brittannië aanleiding tot een groots herinneringsproject. Door een proces van selectie, articulatie, herhaling en weglating creëerde de Britten een gezuiverde herinnering aan het moeilijke verleden van de oorlog dat hen kon helpen bij het verwerken van verdriet en het eren en herdenken van de doden. Het Britse monument de Menenpoort, nabij het centrum van Ieper, is voortgekomen uit dit project en is gewijd aan de Britse soldaten die vermist raakten in de drie slagen bij Ieper. Sinds de oprichting, in 1927, komen mensen er samen om de gevallenen van de oorlog te herdenken. In zijn vijfentachtig jarige bestaan heeft het miljoenen bezoekers ontvangen en de laatste 30 jaar is het enkel in populariteit toegenomen. Deze thesis onderzoekt de relatie tussen de voortdurende populariteit van de Menenpoort en de Britse herdenking van, en herinneringen aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Daarbij word gebruik gemaakt van het theoretische kader van ‘memory studies’ met name de typologie van Aleida Assmann. Zij definieert sociale herinneringen als een vorm van herinneren die zich ontwikkelt tussen en gedeeld wordt door verschillende mensen maar gefundeerd blijft in geleefde ervaring. Deze vorm van herinneren kan een hele natie of generatie omspannen maar verdwijnt met zijn dragers.

    Statement from the High Level Group of the Africa Europe Foundation 11 March 2021 1 Africa Europe Foundation call for action on vaccines The High-Level Group of Personalities of the Africa Europe Foundation has been monitoring the political negotiations involving member nations of the WTO and G20 and is calling today for decisive action on COVID-19 Vaccine Access. Defeating COVID-19, reinforcing our partnership on health and investing in the required capacity- building and infrastructure for vaccine distribution requires urgent political and financial investment in a common future for Africa and Europe. The WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on 11 March 2020 and almost a year later, over 100 million people have been infected with the death toll exceeding two and a half million. Hundreds of millions have lost their jobs and we face the worst economic crisis in seventy years. In the global world we share, ending the pandemic depends on ensuring that vaccines and treatments are available to everyone, regardless of where and how they live. Vaccines are an essential component to ending the pandemic, allowing restrictions on social interaction and economic activity to be lifted. Extraordinary global research efforts have created a pipeline of new vaccine candidates. But if they are only available to a few countries or continue to be auctioned off to the highest bidder, we will extend the life of the pandemic. For as long as the virus is spreading anywhere, the risk of mutations remains and the impact on economies and livelihoods will continue. In short, none of us are safe until all of us are safe.
