Perhaps taking some inspiration from The Suicide Squad - or maybe going even farther back to the scruffy cinematic classic The Dirty Dozen - she assembles a new super-powered team of misanthropic and antiheroic oddballs for this origin story. The best scene was an extended and energetic altercation between a trio of guest stars and this new team during their housewarming party. Don't ask. It was punctuated by some quippy dialogue - a Simone specialty - to pump life into the somewhat dull proceedings. Feb 25, Sesana rated it liked it Shelves: comicssuperhumans. I was a fan of Simone's original turn on Secret Six, so I was very excited to see that the title would be coming to New 52, with her writing. Should I have been? Hm, maybe. Catman is still the star of the book, a character who Simone singlehandedly rescued from the reject bin. Three of the characters I loved from Secret Six, Ragdoll, Scandal, and Jeannette, also show up, briefly, and it Secret Six: Vol. 1 good to see them again. As with the previous version of the team, Simone's main strength was creating a gr I was a fan of Simone's original turn on Secret Six, so I was very excited to see that the title would be coming to New 52, with her writing. As with the previous version of the team, Simone's main strength was creating a group of fairly terrible people and making them sympathetic to Secret Six: Vol. 1 degree and likable again, to a degree. And that's what I Secret Six: Vol. 1 liked about Secret Six, anyways. The story, on the other hand, is a bit of a mess. It's a disorganized in a way that doesn't feel intentional, and it's either too long for what is actually here or not long enough for Simone to have developed it the Secret Six: Vol. 1 she should have. I'm really not sure which. This could be partly because of the extended suburban nightmare interlude that really doesn't do anything for the story arc, as much as it contributes to character development. The abrupt change in art style didn't help, but that's what happens when an artist leaves a Secret Six: Vol. 1 after a few issues. And yet, I still liked this volume quite a bit, and would very happily read more. Especially because the story had a lot of things left unresolved, some of which I'm actually anxious to see resolved. Jul 20, Chad rated it it was ok Shelves:hoopla. I really wanted to like this. Simone's previous Secret Six series was great. This series was confounding to me. You're thrown into the middle of it and given no answers until the last 2 issues when it's all just dumped in our lap. It was odd too because even though only Catman carried through both series, a bunch of other characters from the previous series appear in minor roles but have no knowledge of that previous continuity. It made everything very confusing. And then there's what they did w I really wanted to like this. And then there's what they did with view spoiler [Sue Dibny. They retconned all of Identity Crisis by bringing her back to life. That was one of the major and best DC Secret Six: Vol. 1 of the last 15 years. On the art front, Ken Lashley does the first 2. Lashley's new art style is awful. It looks like he's scribbling over his pencil Secret Six: Vol. 1 with markers. The book looks a thousand times better after he leaves. Secret Six: Vol. 1 and Eaglesham mesh together much better. Jul 05, Alan rated it liked it. I'm an admitted fans of Gail Simone's work on Birds of Prey and the Secret Six series that came before this version this was part of the new 52 DC reboot. At the start I'm not in favor of this work, or at least not as much as I was with the prior series. We get some character carryover, one Secret Six: Vol. 1 favorites, Thomas Blake, and some new characters or at least new versions of existing characters. Excluding Blake's characterization things seem a bit off, or at least Secret Six: Vol. 1 quite as lighthearted as the prior incarnation. The new version of the Ventriloquist is thankfully not as annoying the previous version. Porcelain, Stryx and Big Shot are new or at least Stryx is new to me. As for the discovery of who Mockingbird is? Thank you Gail for not stretching that out tot he end of the series. I was quite happy to see the Mockingbiord storyline wrapped up in the first TPB. But, the new Secret Six doesn't do a bad job. By issue 4, which is a well-writing character issue with a great structure, you're well invested in these new characters. Some of them, especially the Ventriloquist, are still ciphers, but most of the others are interesting people. The plot is a bit Secret Six: Vol. 1, since it meanders a bit in the middle. But the inevitable question of "Who is Mockingbird? The most irritating thing is this book is the return of most of the original Secret Six crew, but in extremely minor roles, and acting like they don't remember the original Secret Six at all. There were like five unrelated stories tacked together. And I kept seeing something like "three months ago". But I never saw anything like "present". So apparently we kept going back in time, by three month blocks. Yet the story arc itself kept moving forward. So what the bloody hell was up with that "three months ago" every other page? And Batgirl: Deadline Volume 5 she has this mission that she can't accomplish by herself. So she scrambles to find people. The story before that? Or maybe to stories ago. There's this mute super killer who hangs out with her. Tagging along on missions. Nor was she around when she realized she couldn't do the mission by herself and needed help. Then for no apparent reason, Catwoman and Batman's daughter showed up to offer her help. The first Batgirl did upon being offered this help was to savagely beat the woman who offered to help her. Batgirl was an emotional mess who beat everyone around her, was a nasty bitch to everyone who tried to help her Batgirl: Deadline Volume 5 Poison Ivy and Huntress and had a massive chip on her shoulder. I'm surprised anyone would want anything to do with her. And then the last story was set in the future. And Batgirl has bulked up to the size of the Incredible Hulk and goes by the name "Beast".

What I didn't like: The ending issue was a waste. That was the true highlight of this book. The second story in this collection featuring Toymaster and Jimmy Olsen for some reason felt very sloppy and confusing, although the artwork is vastly more conventional than the "World's Collide" story. The art was a stylistic choice that didn't really match the story. Batman's own investigation reveals the murder culprit to be the Joker , who attacks Clark for continuing Garret's story. More on that later Shipping cost cannot be calculated. Superman changes his mind at the last moment. The artwork was not some of my favorite. It's a great read because you get an insider's look on how a comic book is made. Become a Patron! Justice League Dark Vol. Superman: The Golden Age. And in the Dark Tower and Gunslinger graphic novels, artist Jae Lee does dark, amazing, amazingly dark work. A new company called Hordr has sprung up, and its business is secrets. However, definitely check out the art on this book. Perfect, perfect, perfect. This was actually fun and well executed. It has that punch em up feel but with inter-dimensional travel, forced nostalgia, uncharacteristic illustrations, and sort of a "gotcha" ending.
