EPILOGUE EIGHTEEN Archives in the Service of Manuscript Study: The Well-Known 525 Nicolas Flamel Index of Manuscripts and Documents Cited 543 General Index 557 © 2013 University of Notre Dame Foreword Robert Somerville In a review many years ago of Richard and Mary Rouse’s well-known monograph, Studies on the “Manipulus florum” of Thomas of Ireland, an eminent medievalist wrote that the Rouses “have shown how an accurate knowledge of groups of manuscripts casts light on the history of medieval ideas, as well as providing information about the history of influential works.” That summary tribute, published in 1981, and encapsu- lating much that was important about “Manipulus florum,” could echo through all of the scholarship of Richard and Mary Rouse. In 1991 the University of Notre Dame Press published a volume of their collected articles, which was titled Authentic Wit- nesses. The work’s subtitle was Approaches to Medieval Texts and Manuscripts. The present collection, Bound Fast with Letters, also carries a subtitle, Medieval Writers, Readers, and Texts. Medieval texts and manuscripts, medieval writers and readers— perhaps an appropriate, epigrammatic subtitle for both of these volumes would be “Presenting Historical Evidence,” or perhaps simply “Historical Evidence.” At the be- ginning of the first essay in Bound Fast with Letters, the Rouses make an obvious but often overlooked methodological point. They express regret over the fact that scholars who treat medieval subjects often fall into two mutually exclusive categories, namely, those who visit and work in the manuscript rooms of libraries, and those who work in archives. Such a divide, of course, often does not make a great deal of sense, and any- one who examines the printed inventories of archives will see that these depositories also contain manuscript books and not only documents. A historian specifically of the premodern church, such as this writer, who looks in a cursory manner into Bound Fast with Letters, might be somewhat surprised. The words “religion” or “belief” do not occur in any of the titles of the articles, although terms such as “Bible,” “sermon,” and “saint” do occur. In a more careful investigation, however, the reader interested in medieval religion will discover much to consider. The book’s first section is especially rich in discussions of religious writers and reli- gious themes. The first article, for example, “TheV ocabulary of Wax Tablets,” conveys information about the literary habits of both church fathers and of medieval monastic © 2013 Universityix of Notre Dame x Foreword authors, and concludes with a fascinating series of vignettes that treats wax tablets and the Bible in medieval culture. The North African Donatists, serious pains in the neck for the great St. Augustine of Hippo, make an appearance in the second article. So does Augustine’s fellow African theologian, St. Cyprian, bishop of Carthage in the middle of the third century, who was one of the earliest of the patristic thinkers to write in Latin. Carolingian liturgy, a twelfth-century monastic sermon from Durham, and the late-twelfth-century Waldensians are featured in the remaining articles in the first sec- tion of Bound Fast with Letters. Moving deeper into the book, our historian of medieval religion might easily gravitate to a title such as “Context and Reception: A Crusading Collection for Charles IV of France” (article 9), or one that deals with Christine de Pizan and virtue (article 12), or with St. Antoninus of Florence and manuscript production (article 17). An in- vestigator of the medieval institutional church, and especially of canon law, would notice an article that is concerned with Gratian’s Decretum. But if he is relying only on titles, a potential reader would overlook the fact that article 5, “The Schools and the Waldensians: A New Work by Durand of Huesca,” deals, of course, with the Waldensi- ans but also among other things treats the important late-twelfth-century scholar of canon law, Bernard of Pavia. Everyone knows not to judge a book by its cover, nor to judge an article only by its title, and anyone doing so in this case would risk missing the richness and the diversity to be discovered in the corpus of studies that the Rouses have assembled. Yet reading the table of contents of Bound Fast with Letters can entice not only investigators of religion but also literary scholars, social historians, classicists, and even historians of travel (see article 13, “Wandering Scribes and Traveling Ar tists”). And throughout, over and above everything, are medieval manuscripts, the foun- dation and the hallmark of the Rouses’ scholarship. When these remarks were com- posed, the book’s index of manuscripts cited was not available. That list will include dozens and dozens of shelf marks, and will offer a treasure trove for investigators working in many areas of medieval studies. But by no means is the reward for reading these articles only the wealth of shelf marks. There also are stunning examples of won- derful prose. Take one example, at the end of the second paragraph of the afore- mentioned “Context and Reception”: “Indeed, a text is one of the more protean of human creations, capable of being pushed, pulled, squeezed, stretched, colored any number of different hues, of changing its appearance considerably, all without ceasing to be recognizable as itself.” A well-traveled medievalist colleague of Richard Rouse once observed that he saw him more often in Europe than in North America. The reason, of course, is that Eu- rope is where the bulk of medieval Western manuscripts have been preserved (with all due respect for some fine American collections, for instance, the Plimpton Collection at my own university). It has been said that scholars who work with medieval books, if they do it well, must know many things. For starters, paleography and codicology, es- pecially the former, are essential fields of knowledge that can seem almost magical to © 2013 University of Notre Dame Foreword xi a nonspecialist. I have had the privilege to know some great paleographers, and once, years ago, in conversation on this subject with Richard, I bemoaned the fact that I never had formal instruction in dating manuscript hands and was in awe of those (like him) who could do this. He immediately attempted to demystify the matter, telling me that in the absence of other evidence “don’t believe anyone” who offers a date for a manuscript hand more precisely than within fifty years. The point has not been lost on a church historian who uses manuscripts yet knows less than he would like about when and where they were transcribed. Indeed, it certainly is necessary to be properly cautious in assigning dates to medieval books—one should not make this stuff up— yet I confess that I would be hard pressed to disbelieve Richard and Mary Rouse were they ever to tell me that a codex which I was studying was written, say, between 1140 and 1145.

    1 Saint Joan Timeline Compiled by Richard Rossi A certain understanding of the historical background to Saint Joan is necessary to fully understand the various intricacies of the play. As an ocean of ink has been spilled by historians on Joan herself, I shall not delve too deeply into her history, keeping closely to what is relevant to the script. My dates, which may not necessarily match those that Shaw used, are the historically accepted dates; where there is discrepancy, I have notated. In some cases, I have also notated which characters refer to certain events in the timeline. There is a great deal of history attached to this script; the Hundred Years War was neither clean nor simple, and Joan was, as The Inquisitor says, “...crushed between these mighty forces, the Church and the Law.” 1st Century: Saint Peter founds the Catholic Church of Rome. (Warwick mentions St. Peter) 622: Establishment of Mohammad’s political and religious authority in Medina. (Cauchon mentions the prophet) 1215: The Waldensian movement, founded by Peter Waldo around 1170, is declared heretical at the Fourth Lateran Council. The movement had previously been declared heretical in 1184 at the Synod of Verona, and in 1211 80+ Waldensians were burned at the stake at Strausbourg. This was one of the earliest proto-Protestant groups and was very nearly destroyed. 1230’s: Establishment of the Papal Inquisition, which would later prosecute the trial against Joan of Arc. (Mentioned by Warwick. This is the same inquisition mentioned throughout the script) 1328: Charles IV of France dies without a male heir, ending the Capetian Dynasty and raising some very serious questions regarding the right of inheritance.

    THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR HISTORY The Hundred Years War was fought between England and France from 1337 to 1453. The war was a series of battles with long periods of peace in between. In 1337, King Edward III of England claimed he was the rightful king of France. This started the long war between the two countries. FIGHTING Disputes caused fighting to continue for over one hundred years. These arguments were over the control of the valuable wool trade, disputes over areas of land, and the support for Scotland by the French. King Edward III believed he was the rightful heir to the French crown through his mother, Isabella. He claimed the right to the throne when he was fifteen because King Charles IV of France died without a male heir. The French chose Philip to be their king instead. When Philip VI of France took control of Aquitaine from the English in 1337, King Edward III decided to fight back. He invaded France and claimed his right to the French throne. EDWARD’S ARMY Edward did not attempt to conquer and control the French land, but instead raided the land in something called chevauchees. He struck deep into the land burning crops, plundering cities, and creating havoc. King Edward III’s army was led by his son, the valiant Edward the “Black Prince” during the 1350s. He was a famous hero to the English known for his chivalry. He led English troops to major victories over the French. During the battle of Poitiers, the Black Prince captured the current King of France, John II.

    England in the Middle Ages Germanic Invasion In the early fifth century, the Romans had to give up their provinces on the British Isles. Here the Romans had influenced the original Celtic* population in many ways including the development of towns and the spreading of Christianity. But all the Roman armies were needed to defend the continental empire* against Germanic tribes from Northern Europe who were being pushed south by the Huns* or migrating south in search of more fertile 5 lands and a warmer climate. (See chapter on the Migration Period.) In the course of this migration, some Germanic tribes also moved west and settled in England which was no longer protected by the Romans. Possibly, some of these invaders had even been invited: Hengist* and Horsa*, chieftains* of Anglo and Saxon tribes from the continent, helped a local king to fight against his enemies. But they did not leave. Instead, they invited more Angles and Saxons to follow them. Other chieftains followed this 10 example, establishing Germanic kingdoms throughout the major part of England. In this process of Anglo-Saxon settlement, the Celtic people were gradually driven back to the edges of the British Isles. Since their Christianisa- tion in the 6th and 7th century, the Angles and Saxons shared at least the same religious background with the Celts (The Celts had already converted to Christianity in the 4th and 5th century). But all in all the Celtic culture re- mained undisturbed only in hilly areas difficult to conquer such as Wales in the west or Scotland in the north.

His continual conflicts with Charles the Bold of Burgundy and the rest of France’s nobles are some of the most interesting political struggles of the medieval world. Louis XI, through his tireless work, not only greatly transformed the monarchy but also greatly strengthened France as a kingdom and set it on its way to becoming the united nation we know today. This committee will transport you to France as it reinvents itself after the Hundred Years War. Louis XI, the current king of France, is doing everything in his power to reform and reinvigorate the French monarchy. Many view his reign as tyranny. Whaley A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History at the University of Canterbury, 2017. ABSTRACT Much has been written about representations of kingship and regnal au- thority in the French vernacular chronicles popularly known as Les grandes chroniques de France, first composed at the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Denis in 1274 by the monk Primat. However, historians have ignored the fact that Primat intended his work to be a miroir for the princes—a didactic guidebook from which cadets of the Capetian royal family of France could learn good governance and morality. This study intends to correct this oversight by analysing the ways in which the chroniclers Guillaume de Nangis, Richard Lescot, Pierre d’Orgemont, Jean Juvénal des Ursins, and Jean Chartier constructed moral character arcs for many of the members of the Capetian family in their continua- tions to Primat’s text. This thesis is organised into case studies that fol- low the storylines of various cadets from their introduction in the narrative to their departure. Each cadet is analysed in isolation to deter- mine how the continuators portrayed them and what moral themes their depictions supported, if any. Together, these cases prove that the chron- iclers carefully crafted their narratives to serve as miroirs, but also that their overarching goals shifted in response to the growing political cri- ses caused by the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) and the Armagnac- Burgundian civil war (1405-1435).

This thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Philosophy of the University of Western Australia School of Humanities History 2015 The copyright of this work belongs to the author ii iii Abstract This thesis examines the different and changing ideas about the authority of the Holy Roman Emperors during the later middle ages, with particular reference to the belief that the emperors were the temporal heads of Christendom, constituted by God as the defenders of the universal Church, and rightfully possessing an authority (of some sort) beyond their own territorial borders, over Christendom, or even over the world, as a whole. The thesis argues that ideas of a unique imperial authority continued to be developed and refined throughout the later middle ages: indeed, it was in this period that they found their clearest expositors. Nor were such ideas marginal or lacking in intellectual force: imperialist thought was maintained and defended, often with considerable subtlety, by some of the most important thinkers of their day, such as Dante, Marsilius of Padua, William of Ockham, Petrarch, Nicholas Cusanus, and Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini. This thesis identifies several distinct conceptions of imperial authority, maintained by different groups of people for different purposes. It examines each in detail, and explains how they were related to the political circumstances and events of the time. A close analysis of specific crucial events and theoretical texts is set in a narrative account which provides the historical context.

At one point, the French army had over 50,000 compared to Britain’s 32,000 The best English defensive position was made through the use of the longbow. Its arrows had more penetrating power than a bolt from a crossbow (what the French used). The Battle of Crécy (1346) Edward III landed in Normandy in July 1346 with about 10,000 men. The English used their longbowmen to check each attack in turn. At the end, the French were decimated and the English had a decisive victory. Finch, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 This dissertation examines New York Public Library Spencer ms. 22, a fourteenth- century French Bible en images (narrative picture Bible), and its relationship with the picture Bible of King Sancho VII of Navarre (Amiens, Bibliothèque municipale ms. 108), completed in the year 1197. Previous scholarship on these manuscripts has described Spencer 22 as a copy of Sancho’s Bible, based on the close similarity of visual narrative content and iconography found in Spencer 22 and its predecessor. The range of aesthetic and linguistic differences between the manuscripts, however, signifies a process more akin to translation, a term that better expresses the relationship between Sancho’s Bible and Spencer 22, as well as the specific needs of its patron, Jeanne II of Navarre.
