JANUARY MIXED SALE Wednesday, January 16, 2019 - 12:00 Noon Fairplex - Pomona, CA © Mesaros Calif. Incentive Program_Cat 18_Page 1 CALIFORNIA’S INCENTIVE PROGRAM IT PAYS TO BREED AND OWN A CALIFORNIA-BRED In 2017, the breeders and owners of California-bred Thoroughbreds and the owners of California-based stallions received over $12M in premiums through the California Incentive Program. In addition, special racing opportunities afforded California-breds in 2017, provided more than $20M in purses for races restricted to California-breds. As a result of legislation recently amended in 2009, total monies available for incentive awards are distributed as follows: 10% to the California-bred race fund; 15% to the Maiden Bonus program: 20% bonus on the winner’s share to the owner of a California-bred Thoroughbred horse conceived by a registered eligible Thoroughbred stallion that finishes first in an open qualifying race, and a 10% bonus on the winner’s share to the owner of a California-bred Thoroughbred horse that finishes first in an open qualifying race that was not conceived by a registered eligible Thoroughbred stallion. The tracks are adding an additional 10% for Cal-bred winners of allowance races making the bonus 30%. A qualifying race is all non-claiming races excluding stakes with a purse of at least $15,000, as are open non maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. After these deductions, 75% of the remainder to be paid as breeder awards, and 25% of the fund to be paid as stallion awards.

Golden Horn, Gleneagles Slated to Finally Meet in Irish Champion The much anticipated matchup between star European miler GLENEAGLES (IRE) and fellow standout GOLDEN HORN (GB) appears set to finally take place Saturday in Leopardstown’s $1.33 million “Win and You’re In” QIPCO Irish Champion (GI), with an eight-horse field in place, and a berth in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf going to the winner. The Irish Champion is one of three Challenge races at Leopardstown and highlights a weekend that features 10 total “Win and You’re In” races, including the prestigious Ricoh Woodbine Mile (GI) Sunday. A rainy forecast for Friday has caused Leopardstown officials to move the Irish Champion to the outside course, and to start Saturday’s race about one hour earlier in the program. The connections of both Coolmore’s Gleneagles and Anthony Oppenheimer’s Golden Horn, the pair of 3-year-old standouts are expected to meet in the 1 ¼-mile race after the latter withdrew from a potential clash in the “Win and You’re In” Juddmonte International (GI) at York August 19 due to the soft turf.

Sunday at Del Mar. The 4-year-old completed the Crosby=s six furlongs in 1:07.65, just .05 seconds off the track=s 43-year-old record for the distance. Off as the even-money choice, Lord Nelson sat third, two to three lengths off a blazing :21.16 quarter-mile set by joint leaders Justin Squared (Zensational) and Subtle Indian (Indian Charlie). Moving to tackle the leaders under Flavien Prat on the latter half of the turn, Lord Nelson opened clear in the straightaway and bounded home by four lengths, nearly matching the track record of King of Cricket (Coursing), set back in 1973. Lord Nelson's time established a stakes record for the Crosby, eclipsing the 54-year-old record of 1:07.80 set by Crazy Kid, which at the time was a world's record.
