02 LC 30 0433 House Resolution 1589 By: Representative Hembree of the 98th A RESOLUTION 1 Commending Walton Goggins; and for other purposes. 2 WHEREAS, Walton Goggins, a 1989 graduate of Lithia Springs High School and former 3 resident of Douglas County, Georgia, has been awarded Hollywood's highest honor, an 4 Oscar, in the short film, live action category; and 5 WHEREAS, this talented actor not only acted in the Oscar-winning film, "The Accountant," 6 parts of which were filmed in Douglas County, but was also one of its producers; and 7 WHEREAS, from the age of 12, when he walked into the office of a casting agent, he knew 8 he wanted to be an actor and by 19 was headed for Hollywood; and 9 WHEREAS, he has appeared in numerous films including "The Apostle," "Shanghai Noon," 10 and "Major League III," as well as a number of television series and movies including 11 "NYPD Blue," "JAG," "In the Heat of the Night," and "Beyond the Prairie: The True Story 12 of Laura Ingalls Wilder;" and 13 WHEREAS, currently he is playing a Los Angeles police officer in a new highly acclaimed 14 television drama, "The Shield," on the FX network; and 15 WHEREAS, his mother, Janet Long, still resides in Douglas County; and 16 WHEREAS, this award-winning actor, who credits his success to hard work, tenacity, and 17 focusing his energy in one direction, acknowledges that Lithia Springs is his home and part 18 of who he is and that he is very thankful to have come from the South. 19 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES that 20 the members of this body commend Walton Goggins on his distinguished acting career and 21 on his Academy Award. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. Television representations and the social milieu in which they are situated are considered as parallel, mutually informing discourses, including the ways in which those representations have been engaged discursively through reviews, news coverage and, in some cases, blogs. ii To Desmond, Oonagh and Eamonn For everything.
