Media Release: Wednesday July 27, 2016 Vice Principals New HBO comedy starring Danny McBride premieres Mondays from August 22 at 8.30pm only on The Comedy Channel **Click here to view promo** Created by Danny McBride and Jody Hill (co-creators of HBO’s Eastbound & Down), Vice Principals is a dark comedy series that tells the story of southern suburban school, North Jackson High, and the two people who almost run it – the Vice Principals. Danny McBride (Eastbound and Down, This Is The End, Tropic Thunder) and Walton Goggins (Justified, The Hateful Eight) star as Neal Gamby and Lee Russell, a pair of ambitious administrators waged in an epic power struggle to ascend to the top spot after the long-time Principal (Bill Murray) steps down to look after his terminally ill wife. However both VPs plans are foiled when the school board installs a replacement Principal choosing neither for the role. When Dr. Belinda Brown (Kimberly Hebert Gregory) swoops in to claim the job, Gamby and Russell put their mutual disdain aside and forge an unholy alliance. Operating by the adage that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend,” the unlikely pair team up for an all-out, take-no-prisoners effort to bring down Dr. Brown, the only person who may in fact have the school’s best interests at heart. The VPs will go to extreme lengths to overthrow their new boss – no- one is safe and nothing is off limits. Ryan May 2021 Examining Committee Members: Jan Fernback, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Nancy Morris, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Ron Becker, External Member, Miami University ABSTRACT This study considers the case of representation of transgender people and issues on American fictional television from 2004 to 2014, a period which represents a steady surge in transgender television characters relative to what came before, and prefigures a more recent burgeoning of transgender characters since 2014. The study thus positions the period of analysis as an historical period in the changing representation of transgender characters. A discourse analysis is employed that not only assesses the way that transgender characters have been represented, but contextualizes American fictional television depictions of transgender people within the broader sociopolitical landscape in which those depictions have emerged and which they likely inform. ABSTRACT This dissertation explores how secondary principals understand and negotiate the secondary vice-principal role. The principal assigns vice-principal duties so there is no standard description for the vice-principal role (Ontario Ministry of Education, 1990). My conceptual framework, based on the notions of role and work, informed the study. Using an interpretive basic, generic qualitative study approach, I conducted single 60 to 90 minute semi-structured interviews with 13 secondary principals from four Ontario district school boards. Data analysis was on-going and used a modified version of the constant comparative method for themes to emerge. Findings indicated that secondary principals expect their vice-principals to perform both operational and instructional tasks, although the school day remains dominated by operational duties related to supporting students and staff.
