FOR THURSDAY, July 16th, 2020 CORONAVIRUS LIFE Drive Thru Job Fairs Are A Thing Now AUDIO: Bobbi Miller SOCIAL MEDIA: Photo LENGTH: 00:00:09 LEAD: Well here's one way to find workers with 'drive.' In Oshkosh, Wisconsin, there was a COVID- inspired job fair. It was set up for people who lost their jobs due to the pandemic. But it also had a classic "coronavirus theme." It was a drive through job fair where people could stop at different tents set up in a parking lot. One of the event organizers says this set up gives people an opportunity to visit more booths than they would at a traditional job fair. OUTCUE: get to see TikTok Teen Says Her Mask Was Pierced Into Her Ear At Claire’s AUDIO: @ItsSissySheridan (TikTok) SOCIAL MEDIA: Photo LENGTH: 00:00:16 LEAD: Dying to get your ears pierced during a pandemic? Watch out for your mask! A teen on TikTok got her ears pierced at Claire’s in the mall. When she got in the car, she realized her face mask was pierced into her ear lobe. Ouch. The girl filmed herself hysterically crying in the car. 2020 just isn’t it. OUTCUE: I hate you, Claire's (sobs) Walmart Is Requiring Masks Nationwide AUDIO: Anthony Spencer SOCIAL MEDIA: Video LENGTH: 00:00:08 LEAD: Walmart is telling customers to mask up. Whether local governments require it or not, the retail giant will make customers wear one. The mandate starts Monday. A lot of people vented frustration with the decision on social media. Some even said they wouldn't shop there again. But a customer in Arkansas supports the decision. Hours after Walmart's announcement, Kohl's and Kroger announced they would also require facemasks at their stores. OUTCUE: masks in there Masks Creating Issues For Deaf People AUDIO: Heather Hughes SOCIAL MEDIA: Photo LENGTH: 00:00:10 LEAD: These days, even sign language is falling on deaf ears. Masks have created issues for those hard of hearing. Not only can they not read lips, but now even some sign language is getting lost in translation. The Executive Director of the Deaf Action Center says that similar to how people use tone to give off emotion, sign language interpreters give off tone in their facial expressions. But with interpreters signing press conferences with a mask on, it makes that a bit more difficult. Experts say even clear masks aren't a perfect solution. They're costlier, harder to clean, and sometimes get fogged up. OUTCUE: being serious Rose Parade Canceled AUDIO: David Eads SOCIAL MEDIA: Video LENGTH: 00:00:22 LEAD: Already we're seeing our New Year's traditions get disrupted. The Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association announced that the Rose Parade will be canceled this year. COVID cases keep rising in California and it's making planning tricky. David Eads (eeds), the man in charge of the operation, says planning takes a year, and already 12 of 22 scheduled bands have pulled out. He also says musicians blowing into instruments and people coming together to put flowers on the floats wouldn't be safe. As of now, the Rose Bowl football game is scheduled to go on as usual. But as major conferences continue to shake up their schedules, some wonder if college football will take place at all. OUTCUE: from South America PROTESTS Another Disturbing Police Brutality Video Goes Viral AUDIO: Derrick Thompson + Charles Hewitt (WARNING: “ass” is said) SOCIAL MEDIA: Photo LENGTH: 00:00:23 LEAD: **Audio contains the word "ass"** It's another video of a white police officer using force on a Black man. The video is from 2019, but is making the rounds now as a letter was sent to the Virginia Attorney General by the victim's lawyer. The video shows a Black man, Derrick Thompson, being pulled over. Virginia State Trooper Charles Hewitt, unlocks the car door through the window, removes Thompson's seat belt and threatens to beat him up. Eventually Hewitt drags Thompson out of the car resulting in several bruises to the victim. As the officer drags Thompson out of the car, knowing he was being filmed, the cop said, "watch the show folks." OUTCUE: one more chance MOVIES AND TV Khloé Kardashian Is Now A Migraine Med Spokesperson AUDIO: Khloé Kardashian (CBS Connect) LENGTH: 00:00:26 LEAD: Forget diet teas, Khloé Kardashian is now selling migraine meds! The TV star teamed up with Biohaven Pharmaceuticals to promote its new migraine drug. It’s called Nurtec ODT and the ‘Keeping Up’ star says it’s saving her during lockdown. She tells CBS Connect she’s been having more migraines because of the pandemic-induced stress . But thanks to her new influencer gig, she’s in good hands. Khloé is currently quarantining with her two-year-old daughter, Dream. OUTCUE: treat them. Khloé Kardashian Feels ‘Helpless’ In The Pandemic AUDIO: Khloé Kardashian (CBS Connect) LENGTH: 00:00:08 LEAD: The pandemic is weighing heavy on Khloé Kardashian. She’s happy at home cooking and playing with her two-year-old daughter, Dream. But she tells CBS Connect she’s having a hard time watching from the sidelines. She, like many Americans, feels helpless in the fight against the virus. The ‘Keeping Up’ star is now a spokesperson for a migraine company. She says her headaches have gotten more frequent due to the stress of the pandemic. And apparently the new med Nurtec ODT is really helping her. OUTCUE: always think that. Khloé Kardashian Says Quarantine Brought Her ‘Back To The Basics’ AUDIO: Khloé Kardashian (CBS Connect) LENGTH: 00:00:13 LEAD: Celebs, they’re just like us! Quarantining is tough on everyone, including Khloé Kardashian. She tells CBS Connect the Kardashian Quarantine looks pretty much like everyone else’s. She’s cooking, hanging out with her 2-year-old daughter, Dream, and learning to enjoy this time off away from the Hollywood spotlight. The 37-year-old says she feels for her other sisters who have older kids to deal with. She’ll take a two-year-old over a house full of school kids any day! Same, Khlo, same. OUTCUE: the basics. ‘The Golden Girls’ House Is For Sale AUDIO: 'The Golden Girls' Theme Song SOCIAL MEDIA: Photo LENGTH: 00:00:40 LEAD: If you want to live out your ‘Golden Girls’ fantasy, now’s your chance. The home of TV’s favorite foursome, Rose, Dorothy, Blanche and Sophia, is on the market. ‘The Golden Girls’ house is going for just under $3 million. The four-bedroom house was built back in 1955. But unlike the show, it’s in the swanky Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Not Miami. Grab you three best friends and pitch in a few hundred grand? The show has added 10 new contestants to Clare Crawley's upcoming season. Clearly, that four-month delay was worth it. So how will they film in a pandemic? Rumor has it the show is shooting in Palm Springs at a massive resort. Everyone will have to quarantine at the 45-acre desert oasis before shooting begins. Chris Harrison tells Entertainment Tonight he doesn’t want people to be reminded of the virus while watching the show. The resort has 41 pools and is currently booked through September 3rd. Based on Clare’s Instagram, fans think she’s already there. OUTCUE: into this. Kermit The Frog’s New Voice Has Muppet Purists Fuming AUDIO: Kermit The Frog SOCIAL MEDIA: Video SOCIAL MEDIA: Photo LENGTH: 00:00:13 LEAD: Disney+ dropped the trailer for 'Muppets Now' but it's not excitement over the show that has people talking. The trailer, which has our Muppet friends communicating via Zoom, shows Kermit the Frog leading a meeting. But his voice sounds just a bit different. Steve Whitmire did the voice of the green amphibian since 1990 up until 2016 when he retired. Matt Vogel took over in 2017. But Kermit hasn't been in the public spotlight much since that time. Now that he's back, people think Kermit sounds nothing like he used to. Some users on Twitter vented their anger with the new voice. But they'll just have to accept it as another thing that's part of our "new normal." OUTCUE: (crosstalk fades) Tyra Banks New Host Of Dancing With The Stars AUDIO: Tyra Banks ('Good Morning America,' ABC) SOCIAL MEDIA: Video LENGTH: 00:00:11 LEAD: ***MUST CREDIT 'GOOD MORNING AMERICA'*** Tyra Banks is ready to take on ‘Dancing With the Stars!’ The model is the next host of ABC's long- running competition series. According to the latest Monmouth University/Gannett New Jersey Poll taken after the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary, Hillary Clinton now leads Barack Obama by 12 points among likely Democratic voters in New Jersey, which is down somewhat from the 19 point lead she held in October. However, the poll found an even larger shake-up on the Republican side, with John McCain now holding a slight 4 point lead over Rudy Giuliani. Just a few months ago, the former New York mayor held a commanding 32 point lead over the Arizona senator. Among likely Democratic primary voters in New Jersey, Hillary Clinton currently claims support from 42% of voters, compared to 30% for Barack Obama, 9% for John Edwards, and 2% for Dennis Kucinich. Another 17% remain undecided. Support levels for Clinton, Edwards and Kucinich are nearly identical to what they registered in the October 2007 poll. However, Obama’s support has increased by 7 percentage points on the heels of his strong showing in Iowa and New Hampshire. “Senator Obama’s early win in Iowa has swung some previously undecided New Jersey voters into his camp, but Senator Clinton’s support among rank and file Democrats here remains strong,” commented Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

CBS NEWS POLL For release: Friday, June 29, 2007 6:30 P.M. EDT CAMPAIGN 2008 June 26-28, 2007 Many Americans are looking for even more choices in the race for the presidency than the 18 announced candidates they now have: Should Fred Thompson decide to officially enter the race for the Republican nomination, he is already a strong contender, tying John McCain for second place, after Rudy Giuliani. Americans would like a third political party (especially self-described Independents, and primary voters who say they are dissatisfied with their current choices) -- but Americans have historically liked the idea of more candidate choices. But as of now, most don’t know much about or have an opinion of New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who recently dropped out of the Republican Party, perhaps in anticipation of a run at the presidency in 2008 as a third-party candidate. And on the Democratic side, where most primary voters are satisfied with the choices, Hillary Clinton continues to lead Barack Obama. MIKE BLOOMBERG AND A THIRD PARTY New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's recent party registration change from Republican to “Unaffiliated” has many speculating that he is preparing an independent run for President. That speculation has sparked debate about the need for a third political party. 53% say that a third party is needed to compete with the Democratic and Republican parties. 41% disagree. These views are similar to what they were in 1996, and in 1992 voters also expressed the desire for a new party. Half of both Republicans and Democrats do not think there is a need for a third political party, but 71% of Independents say there is.

  • TO: Edwards for President FROM: Global Strategy Group, LLC RE: Updated Electability Data Date December 18, 2007
MEMORANDUM TO: Edwards for President FROM: Global Strategy Group, LLC RE: Updated electability data Date December 18, 2007 Synopsis: Nationwide polling shows John Edwards is the Democrat with the best chance of defeating the Republican candidate in the 2008 Presidential election. All three Democratic candidates have a slight lead on Republican frontrunner Rudy Giuliani. Edwards’ average margin of victory is greater than Obama’s and well ahead of Clinton’s against the other Republican candidates. Edwards outperforms the other Democratic candidates in match-ups with Republican candidates in key battleground states including Iowa, Missouri, and Ohio. Further, unlike other Democrats who must “run the table” in states where Democrats have been competitive in recent elections, Edwards brings new states into play. This provides alternate scenarios – and a margin for error – when it comes to amassing 270 electoral votes. National electability: This table shows the average margin for each Democrat for nationwide general election polls since the first of November in which they are included in horse race questions. General Election Match-ups Edwards Clinton Obama Rudy Giuliani........ +4 (4 polls) +4 (15 polls) +2 (7polls) Mike Huckabee .... +14 (3 polls) +5 (3 polls) +10 (3 polls) John McCain........ +8 (3 polls) +3 (6 polls) +1 (4 polls) Mitt Romney......... +18 (3 polls) +9 (9 polls) +11 (8 polls) Fred Thompson.... +14 (1 poll) +9 (7 polls) +10 (4 polls) • In national general election polling, Edwards fares better than or at least as well as Clinton and Obama against all five Republicans. • Against Giuliani, all three candidates maintain a slight lead.

Predicting Elections from Politicians' Faces Abstract Prior research found that people's assessments of relative competence predicted the outcome of Senate and Congressional races. We hypothesized that snap judgments of "facial competence" would provide useful forecasts of the popular vote in presidential primaries before the candidates become well known to the voters. We obtained facial competence ratings of 11 potential candidates for the Democratic Party nomination and of 13 for the Republican Party nomination for the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. To ensure that raters did not recognize the candidates, we relied heavily on young subjects from Australia and New Zealand. We obtained between 139 and 348 usable ratings per candidate between May and August 2007. The top-rated candidates were Clinton and Obama for the Democrats and McCain, Hunter, and Hagel for the Republicans; Giuliani was 9th and Thompson was 10th. At the time, the leading candidates in the Democratic polls were Clinton at 38% and Obama at 20%, while Giuliani was first among the Republicans at 28% followed by Thompson at 22%.
