Volume 9, Issue 6 Page 4 Ask V-A how her second album differs from her debut—the acclaimed jazz CD VA from 2012—and she immediately responds that it represents a deeper and richer part of her. “All I really want to do is get closer and closer to the essence of me,” she says. “I feel that if I can share that part of me, there must be those who will resonate with it, too.” Indeed, the music from the debut album of the Atlanta-based vocalist resonated with listeners all over the world. V-A’s newest project, Interior Notions, is a complex and nuanced record that goes deep into her being. There’s plenty of the straight-ahead sound that got VA played on jazz stations from Atlanta to Chicago, from France to Australia. But these arrangements carry primal imprints and the record is marked by the free improv singing that V-A carries forward from such mentors as Rhiannon and Bobby McFerrin. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics.

JOHN Todd,” soon to be revived on Broadway. CONYERS AND SESAME Sondheim has also written for motion pictures and television, winning several WORKSHOP AT THE 2005 Tony and Oscar Awards. AMERICAN EAGLE AWARDS Broadway stars Michael Cerveris and Liz Callaway presented the award and offered a musical tribute. Cerveris has appeared in The American music community came “Assassins” and will headline in the revival together to honor Broadway of “Sweeney Todd” next fall. Liz Callaway, composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim with one of the most sought after studio singers in one of the National Music Council’s coveted New York, made her Broadway debut in American Eagle Awards, according to Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along.” Council Director David Sanders. Also receiving awards were Michigan Congressman John Conyers and Sesame Workshop, creators of Sesame Street. The presentations took place during the Council’s 24th annual awards luncheon at New York’s Players Club, 16 Gramercy Park South, Thursday, June 2nd at 12 noon. Stephen Sondheim, who recently celebrated his 75th birthday, is a true icon of the American musical theater. He has brought breadth and scope to his music for the Broadway stage, beginning as lyricist for NMC President Gary Ingle, Director David Leonard Bernstein’s “West Side Story” and Sanders, Stephen Sondheim, and Chairman Jule Styne’s “Gypsy,” through his unique Richard Lowenthal at the 2005 American and creative partnership with another Eagle Awards.
