Rückblickend nahm dieser Prozess seinen Ausgang in einer einfachen Beobach- tung: Die vielfältigen Diskussionen des Freiburger Magistranden- und Doktoran- denkolloquiums im Jahr 2012 hatten den Herausgebern erneut vor Augen ge- führt, wie dynamisch sich die deutschsprachige Religionswissenschaft in den Jahr- zehnten seit der so genannten „kulturwissenschaftlichen Wende“ entwickelt hat. Am Beispiel aktueller Einführungswerke wurde in den Diskussionen deutlich, wie in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten – primär in Auseinandersetzung mit Autoren wie Burkhard Gladigow, Hans G. Kippenberg1, Kurt Rudolph2 oder Rainer Flasche3 – neue Forschungsschwerpunkte und –zugänge entstanden sind, welche die For- schung in ganz verschiedene Richtungen vorangebracht haben.4 Um nur drei Beispiele zu nennen: Die Einleitung in die Religionswissenschaft von Kippenberg/von Stuckrad profiliert die Agenda einer Auflösung der Religionswis- senschaft in den Kulturwissenschaften, indem sie nicht nur den Religionsbegriff auf kulturwissenschaftliche Parameter reduziert, sondern gleichzeitig auch religions- wissenschaftliches Arbeiten im Rückgriff auf vielfältige disziplinäre Bezüge konzi- * Die Herausgeber bedanken sich bei ihren Freiburger Kollegen Oliver Krüger, Helmut Zan- der und Richard Friedli für ihren Input in der Planungsphase des Workshops. Geburtstag (Schriftenreihe der Österreichischen Gesell- schaft für Religionswissenschaft, 4). 8 KARSTEN LEHMANN / ANSGAR JÖDICKE piert.5 Jörg Rüpkes Historische Religionswissenschaft versucht dagegen, einen spezifisch geschichtswissenschaftlichen Zugang religionswissenschaftlichen Arbeitens zu kon- turieren und im Sinne einer innerdisziplinären Arbeitsteilung gegen andere Zugän- ge in der Religionswissenschaft abzusetzen.6 Michael Stausbergs Sammelband Reli- gionswissenschaft präsentiert schließlich ein Fachverständnis, welches ganz unter- schiedliche Zugänge unter einem vergleichsweise allgemeinen Dach zusammenführt und dabei die Vielfalt religionswissenschaftlichen Arbeitens hervorhebt.7 Abstrakter formuliert sehen die Herausgeber in dieser Entwicklung einen Pro- zess der Systemdifferenzierung8, in deren Verlauf sich für die Religionswissen- schaft die Frage von Einheit und Differenz des Fachs auf eine neue Art und Wei- se stellt: Zum einen heben die soeben genannten Beispiele hervor, dass innerhalb der Religionswissenschaft sehr unterschiedliche neue Referenzpunkte entstanden sind, welche das Fachverständnis in Bezug auf dessen Gegenstände, Fragestellun- gen und Methoden prägen. Zum anderen scheint die externe Abgrenzung (bei- spielsweise von der Theologie) angesichts dieser Entwicklungen nur noch bedingt auszureichen, um Religionswissenschaft als Einheit zu greifen. Die aktuellen Me- thodendiskussionen machen deutlich, wie Ethnologie, Sprachwissenschaft, So- ziologie oder Geschichtswissenschaft in der Religionswissenschaft erneut als Refe- renzwissenschaften an Bedeutung gewinnen.9 Aus diesen Beobachtungen ergibt sich in zweifacher Hinsicht ein neuer Dis- kussionsbedarf: Einerseits kann die angedeutete Differenzierung zu einer weite- ren Dynamisierung der Religionswissenschaft beitragen, insofern die damit ver- bundenen Debatten aktiv gesucht und ausgetragen werden. Andererseits scheint es im deutschsprachigen Raum aber gegenwärtig an einer Heuristik zu mangeln, welche die mit dieser internen Differenzierung virulent werdende Frage nach Einheit und Differenz des Fachs produktiv herausarbeitet und für die weitere Forschung nutzbar macht. Genau diese zweifache Agenda bildet das Zentrum des vorliegenden Bandes: – Auf der einen Seite möchte er eine Heuristik vorschlagen, welche als Referenz- punkt für die Diskussionen innerhalb der Religionswissenschaft dienen kann. – Auf der anderen Seite möchte er die notwendigen Debatten initiieren, um so die Potentiale der genannten Prozesse für die Religionswissenschaft nutzen zu können. 5 Vgl. This will include discussion of issues that may not be found in traditional texts, and I will supplement the readings with short journal and magazine articles, videos, and slides. The larger questions indirectly addressed in the course will include the following: Are the Indian concepts of "Hinduism" and western concepts of "religion" congruent? How ha colonial scholarship and assumptions shaped our understanding of South Asian Hindus and the "minority traditions" as distinct religious and social groups, blurring regional differences? How are gender issues made manifest in rituals? How does religious identity influence political and social behavior? How do Hindus in South Asia differentiate among themselves? Introduction The Invention of an Ethnic Nationalism he Hindu nationalist movement started to monopolize the front pages of Indian newspapers in the 1990s when the political T party that represented it in the political arena, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP—which translates roughly as Indian People’s Party), rose to power. From 2 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian parliament, the BJP increased its tally to 88 in 1989, 120 in 1991, 161 in 1996—at which time it became the largest party in that assembly—and to 178 in 1998. At that point it was in a position to form a coalition government, an achievement it repeated after the 1999 mid-term elections. For the first time in Indian history, Hindu nationalism had managed to take over power. The BJP and its allies remained in office for five full years, until 2004. The general public discovered Hindu nationalism in operation over these years. But it had of course already been active in Indian politics and society for decades; in fact, this ism is one of the oldest ideological streams in India. It took concrete shape in the 1920s and even harks back to more nascent shapes in the nineteenth century. As a movement, too, Hindu nationalism is heir to a long tradition. Its main incarnation today, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS—or the National Volunteer Corps), was founded in 1925, soon after the first Indian communist party, and before the first Indian socialist party.

    HINDU FUNDAMENTALISM AND CHRISTIAN RESPONSE IN INDIA Rev. Shadakshari T.K. (Bangalore, India and Pastoring Divyajyothi Church of the Nazarene) Introduction One of the purposes of religion, humanly speaking, is to enable people to live a responsible life. One desire is that religious people may not disturb the harmonious life; rather, they may contribute towards it. Today, religions have become a source of conflict and violence in many Asian societies. This is very evident in India where the inter-relationship among religions is breaking up. The contemporary problem in India is the question of nationalism and the issue of marginalized identities. Christians are caught between two: participation in the nationalism in the one hand and commitment to the cause of the marginalized on the other. There is an awakening of nationalism, which bears strong religious stamp, which is strongly promoted by the Hindutva ideology. At the same time there is a strong awakening of the Tribals and Dalits. In this context, the question comes to our mind: how do Christians in India serve both nationalism and marginal groups when both of them are opposing each other? I am not promising the absolute answer for the question raised. However, this article provides some clues by analyzing the historical development of religious fundamentalism and suggesting an appropriate response for Christians. Though there are several religious fundamental groups in the history of India (including Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, and others), this article limits its study to the religious fundamentalism of Hinduism. The importance of Hindu fundamentalism lies in its very contemporary and nationalistic scope, compared to other, more regional expressions.

Some wonder why there are so few Christians in Asia, in spite of the presence of Christianity there since apostolic times. Others see the new millennium as a moment of promise when Asia will become Christian. Some feel that Christianity has failed in Asia because it has not made any serious efforts to dialogue with the developed cultures and reli- gions of Asia. Others think that any efforts to promote interreligious dialogue undercuts the drive for proclaiming Jesus Christ as the only Saviour and spreading the Church. What seems clear from this discussion is that mission is encountering a special challenge in Asia, namely the active presence of developed religious traditions like Hinduism and Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism. An additional factor today is that religious groups in Asia, affirming their identities, are in conflict, more or less violent. The Church is identified as a foreign presence in many countries and it is looked at with suspicion. It is in this Asian context that I would like to situate my reflections. I am not therefore talking about religious pluralism as an objective problem in the abstract. I am reflecting on the proclamation of Jesus Christ in the context of Asian religions. The hearers will certainly influence what and how we proclaim. A POSITIVE VIEW OF OTHER RELIGIONS My reflection starts with an effort to understand the phenomenon of religious pluralism. Many Asian theologians accept that God's salvific encounter with the members of other religions takes place in and through those religions, not in spite of them.

Vivekananda was a representative of the Bengal renais- sance, a movement that is famous for its contribution to the modernization of India. Vivekananda became one of the architects of neo- Hinduism and a pioneer of modern yoga. His ideas also contributed to the rising Hindu nationalism. The article outlines his biography and religious socialization. A closer look will be given to his concept of religion and the way he relates it with India`s national identity. A second major part of the article examines Vivekananda’s understanding of religious experience that is crucial for his yoga philosophy and his philosophy of religion in general. CULTURAL CHANGES AND SOCIAL AND RELIGIOUS REFORM MOVEMENT PART 2 The growth of nationalism and democracy, which led to the struggle for freedom, also found expression in movements to reform and democratise the social institutions and religious outlook of the Indian people. Many Indians realised that social and religious reformation was an essential condition for the all-round development of the country on modern lines and for the growth of national unity and solidarity. The growth of nationalist sentiments, emergence of new economic forces, spread of education, impact of modern western ideas and culture, and increased awareness of the world not only heightened the consciousness of the backwardness and degeneration of Indian society but further strengthened the resolve to reform. Thus, after 1858, the earlier reforming tendency was broadened. The work of earlier reformers, like Raja Rammohun Roy and Pandit Vidyasagar, was carried further by major movements of religious and social reform. Brahmo Samaj Rammohun Roy established the Atmiya Sabha in Calcutta in 1815 in order to propagate monotheism and to fight against the evil customs and practices in Hinduism. Later in 1828 he established the Brahmo Samaj with the same aim. After a long struggle against the practice of Sati he was finally successful in 1829 in abolishing Sati with the help of William Bentinck. The Brahmo tradition of Raja Rammohun Roy was carried forward after 1843 by Devendranath Tagore, who also repudiated the doctrine that the Vedic scriptures were infallible, and after 1866 by Keshub Chandra Sen.

    FERDINANDO SARDELLA Religious experiments in colonial Calcutta Modern Hinduism and bhakti among the Indian middle class alcutta, 1874: it was one hundred and nine years since the British East India CCompany had taken possession of Bengal, sixteen years since the British Raj officially took over its rule and seventy-three years before Indian inde- pendence.1 A vast and ancient civilisation lived under the rule of the inhabit- ants of a small North Atlantic island, who had managed to project their cul- ture, their religion—and their economic interests—into almost every corner of the globe. It was a time when India was the jewel in the crown of the British Raj and Calcutta had been transformed into a Eurasian metropolis second only to London itself. 1874 was also the year when Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī, a Vaishnava of the devotional (bhakti) school of Chaitanya (1486–1534), was born; he died sixty-three years later in 1937. The span of his lifetime was en- trenched in circumstances and events that occurred in and around the city of Calcutta and came to shape the foundation of what is generally known as ‘modern Hinduism’ (the term ‘Hinduism’ will be discussed more in detail at the end of the chapter). For this reason, these years will serve as a suitable focus for this chapter.2 The year 1874 came round at a time of transition in India, when events that began more than a century earlier had started to produce novel patterns of change. The aim is to examine how this identity was formed by rationalising and valorising an available repertoire of images and myths in the face of official and missionary denigration of Hindu tradition. This phenomenon is investigated in terms of a discourse (or a conglomeration of discursive forms) produced by a middle-class operating within the constraints of colonialism. The thesis begins with the Hindu Mela founded in 1867 and the way in which this organisation illustrated the attempt of the Western educated middle-class at self- assertion.
