Wfp Monthly Market Update WFP MONTHLY MARKET UPDATE SUDAN, SEPTEMBER 2017 Highlights . The national average price of sorghum increased this month by 4.0 percent compared to the previous month (August). The retail prices of sorghum increased sharply in Kassala, Blue Nile and White Nile, significantly in Red Sea and Central Darfur, which attributed to the shortage of rainfall in in some states, and border trades in Eastern states. The national average price of goat increased by 3.0 percent compared to the previous month due to the poor range condition this season; the highest increase was in South Darfur, South Kordofan and West Darfur states. The national average price of groundnut increased by only 2.0 percent compared to the previous month. The highest increase was in West Kordofan and Central Darfur states. Summary The national average price of sorghum Sorghum Prices - National Average continued its significant increase, which increased by 4.0 percent compared to 5.0 4.5 August 2017. Additional price data for the three commodities for 2015, 2016 and 2017 by the state found in annex 1 (page 7). 2 SUDAN MONTHLY MARKET UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2017 Sorghum The sorghum retail prices increased in September in all states except South Darfur (decreased by 2.5 percent), West Kordofan (decreased by 0.7 percent) and South Kordofan (decreased by 0.5 percent) compared to the previous month (August). It sharply increased in Kassala (15 percent), Blue Nile (11.8 percent), White Nile (10.4 percent), Red Sea (8.4 percent), Central Darfur (7.2 percent), North Kordofan (7.0 percent) while it slightly increased in East Darfur (2.4 percent), North Darfur (2.2 percent) and West Darfur (1.0 percent). The significant increase in the sorghum prices in some states, which mainly attributed to very poor rainfall and frequent dry spells during the current season in many production areas in addition to shift of many farmers to cultivate cash crops. The sorghum prices varied in all states compared to the same period of the previous year (September 2016). It sharply increased in two states, Central Darfur (100 percent) and West Darfur (85 percent), slightly in Kassala (7.0 percent), North Darfur (6.3 percent) and South Kordofan (6.0 percent). Sorghum prices sharply decreased in White Nile (15 percent), North Kordofan (11 percent) and Red Sea (8 percent), while it decreased slightly in West Kordofan (6 percent) and Blue Nile (4 percent). The sorghum prices were higher by 1 to 155 percent in all states compared to the 5-year average of the same month (September). It slightly increased (by 1 to 3 percent) in White Nile , Kassala, Red Sea, West Kordofan and East Darfur, while it decreased Blue Nile and North Darfur. The stability and/or slight increase the goat prices in most states, which attributed to the poor rainy season and rangeland in the main livestock production areas. The price of goat increased by 5 to 99 percent in all states compared to the same month of the previous year (September 2016), while it was higher by 32 to 160 percent in all states compared to the 5-year average of the same month. The increase in goat prices compared to the previous years attributed to the inflationary increase in the cost of inputs and services. It significantly increased in West Kordofan (8 percent), Central Darfur (7.6 percent), South Darfur (5.7 percent) and West Darfur (5.2 percent), while it slightly increased (by 1 to 3 percent) in White Nile, North Kordofan, South Kordofan, North Darfur and East Darfur. The increasing trend of groundnut prices in most states attributed to the high costs of production and high demand of oilseeds from internal and export markets. The groundnut prices increased by 66 to 200 percent in all states compared to the same month of the previous year (August 2016) while it remained higher in all states by 79 to 157 percent compared to the five-year average of September.     SUDAN Food Security Outlook February to September 2019 Deteriorating macroeconomic conditions to drive high levels of acute food insecurity in 2019 KEY MESSAGES • Food security has seasonally improved with increased cereal Current food security outcomes, February 2019 availability following the November to February harvest. However, the macroeconomic situation remains very poor and is expected to further deteriorate throughout the projection period, and this will drive continued extremely high food and non-food prices. The negative impacts of high food prices will be somewhat mitigated by the fact that livestock prices and wage labor are also increasing, though overall purchasing power will remain below average. A higher number of households than is typical will face Crisis (IPC Phase 3) or worse outcomes through September. • Between June and September, the lean season in Sudan, Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes are expected in parts of Red Sea, Kassala, Al Gadarif, Blue Nile, West Kordofan, North Kordofan, South Kordofan, and Greater Darfur.     REGAINING LIVELIHOODS FOR PASTORALIST AND NOMADIC COMMUNITIES IN SUDAN West Kordofan State has been affected by the continuing war in South Kordofan, the Darfur conflict and the civil war in South Sudan. The secession of South Sudan worsened the predicament of nomads in the area, as movements to the country were blocked. As a result, animals find themselves concentrated in a narrow area with limited resources during the dry season. Diseases that are preventable by vaccination are still considered major threats to animal production. Taking into account the lack of veterinary services in the area for a number of years, which has led to the spread of dangerous transboundary animal diseases, West Kordofan is considered a serious focus for the spread of diseases, undermining Sudan’s role as an important livestock-exporting agent in the region.     South Sudan Emergency Sudan 13 January 2014 Highlights Violence in South Sudan continues, with further internal displacement and refugee movements to neighbouring countries, including Sudan Reports of nearly 10,000 new arrivals in Sudan, including nomadic groups Some 64,000 newly arrived South Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda Government of Sudan, UNHCR and partners are carrying out assessments, providing assistance and increasing preparedness for more arrivals Population figures Since the outbreak of violence in South Sudan on 15 December 2013, 355,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and remain internally displaced within South Sudan, with 69,000 sheltering in UNMISS bases. The latest figures for newly arrived South Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries are as follows: - some 39,000 in Uganda; - 18,616 in Ethiopia; - 6,778 in Kenya; and - some 10,000 in Sudan (including nomadic groups), of whom 1,371 individuals have been confirmed by the Government of Sudan as being refugees. In Sudan, there are confirmed (but in many cases unverified) reports of new arrivals in the following areas: South Kordofan State According to the Government Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC), 979 people have arrived from Malakal and Kaka in Upper Nile State to Abu Jubaiha locality, South Kordofan, including 517 individuals in Qurayd village and 450 individuals in Judayd village, approximately 40km south of Abu Jubaiha town. In Talodi locality, 2,574 individuals have arrived in El Liri, approximately 60km north of the border with Upper Nile State. The majority are from a nomadic population affected by the fighting in the Unity and Upper Nile States, and many of them have been assessed by local authorities as having urgent humanitarian needs.

    Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Assessment (CFSVA) Sudan Summary Report, Q1 2021 May 2021 Comprehensive Food Security Vulnerability Assessment (CFSVA), Q1 2021 Introduction The Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Assessment (CFSVA) was conducted from December 2020 to early March 2021 against the backdrop of ongoing economic instability and persistent chronic food insecurity and malnutrition. The assessment was conducted in all 18 states in Sudan and sought to ascertain the food security situation of the resident population, assess risk factors that contribute to food insecurity, and highlight vulnerable geographical areas. This information on vulnerability will enable well- informed decision-making processes for programme design and targeting purposes, as well as provide evidence for the expansion of future assistance programs. The CFSVA results are also a major data source for IPC, HNO and HRP. During this food security assessment, data was collected from approximately 36,300 resident households were completed in 181 localities distributed across all 18 states. The findings were aimed to be representative of households at the locality level. The questionnaire included information at the household level on demographics, housing, assets, livelihoods, expenditures, coping strategies and food source and consumption. Additional information was collected on child health and caring practices as well as awareness of nutrition related messages. Due to different methodologies of assessing food security, CFSVA figures are different from the IPC figures. Also, as CFSVA covers more diverse indicators, it is mainly used for WFP’s internal programme decision making purposes. WFP would like to thank State Ministries of Production and Economic Resources for their role in data collection, and HAC and COR for their role in field coordination.
