WFP MONTHLY MARKET UPDATE SUDAN, SEPTEMBER 2017 Highlights . The national average price of sorghum increased this month by 4.0 percent compared to the previous month (August). The retail prices of sorghum increased sharply in Kassala, Blue Nile and White Nile, significantly in Red Sea and Central Darfur, which attributed to the shortage of rainfall in in some states, and border trades in Eastern states. The national average price of goat increased by 3.0 percent compared to the previous month due to the poor range condition this season; the highest increase was in South Darfur, South Kordofan and West Darfur states. The national average price of groundnut increased by only 2.0 percent compared to the previous month. The highest increase was in West Kordofan and Central Darfur states. Summary The national average price of sorghum Sorghum Prices - National Average continued its significant increase, which increased by 4.0 percent compared to 5.0 4.5 August 2017. Additional price data for the three commodities for 2015, 2016 and 2017 by the state found in annex 1 (page 7). 2 SUDAN MONTHLY MARKET UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2017 Sorghum The sorghum retail prices increased in September in all states except South Darfur (decreased by 2.5 percent), West Kordofan (decreased by 0.7 percent) and South Kordofan (decreased by 0.5 percent) compared to the previous month (August). It sharply increased in Kassala (15 percent), Blue Nile (11.8 percent), White Nile (10.4 percent), Red Sea (8.4 percent), Central Darfur (7.2 percent), North Kordofan (7.0 percent) while it slightly increased in East Darfur (2.4 percent), North Darfur (2.2 percent) and West Darfur (1.0 percent). The significant increase in the sorghum prices in some states, which mainly attributed to very poor rainfall and frequent dry spells during the current season in many production areas in addition to shift of many farmers to cultivate cash crops. The sorghum prices varied in all states compared to the same period of the previous year (September 2016). It sharply increased in two states, Central Darfur (100 percent) and West Darfur (85 percent), slightly in Kassala (7.0 percent), North Darfur (6.3 percent) and South Kordofan (6.0 percent). Sorghum prices sharply decreased in White Nile (15 percent), North Kordofan (11 percent) and Red Sea (8 percent), while it decreased slightly in West Kordofan (6 percent) and Blue Nile (4 percent). The sorghum prices were higher by 1 to 155 percent in all states compared to the 5-year average of the same month (September). It slightly increased (by 1 to 3 percent) in White Nile , Kassala, Red Sea, West Kordofan and East Darfur, while it decreased Blue Nile and North Darfur. The stability and/or slight increase the goat prices in most states, which attributed to the poor rainy season and rangeland in the main livestock production areas. The price of goat increased by 5 to 99 percent in all states compared to the same month of the previous year (September 2016), while it was higher by 32 to 160 percent in all states compared to the 5-year average of the same month. The increase in goat prices compared to the previous years attributed to the inflationary increase in the cost of inputs and services. It significantly increased in West Kordofan (8 percent), Central Darfur (7.6 percent), South Darfur (5.7 percent) and West Darfur (5.2 percent), while it slightly increased (by 1 to 3 percent) in White Nile, North Kordofan, South Kordofan, North Darfur and East Darfur. The increasing trend of groundnut prices in most states attributed to the high costs of production and high demand of oilseeds from internal and export markets. The groundnut prices increased by 66 to 200 percent in all states compared to the same month of the previous year (August 2016) while it remained higher in all states by 79 to 157 percent compared to the five-year average of September.
