  • AFL Draft Combine Tests Information Sheet
AFL Draft Combine Tests Information Sheet At the end of each year the AFL holds an event called the 'Draft Combine' where hopeful AFL players are put through a series of testing. These tests include medical screening, physical performance tests such as vertical jump test, 20m sprint test and a range psychological performance tests. Vertical Jump Test This test is used to evalute an athletes lower body power. Vertical jumping and lower body power is important in AFL when jumping for marks, jumping to spoil and particularly important in ruck contests. 20m Sprint Test The 20m sprint is a test of a players acceleration and speed. Both are very important in a game of AFL for breaking away from an opponent, getting open on a lead and bursting away from stoppages. AFL Agility Test This is a specific slalom-type agility test developed for AFL, which involves running in, out and around obstacles over roughly 40 meters in total. The ability to quickly change direction is very important for AFL to be able to get clear of an opponent, or move through congestion. Yo-Yo Test The Yo-Yo Test is used to test a players aerobic endurance. This is arguably the most important phyical ascpet of AFL as players will run up to 16-18km a game (dependant upon position). In AFL you need to be aerobically fit to perform well towards to end of quarters and at the end of a match, which can be the most critical part of a game. • AFL Coaching Newsletter - February 2010
AFL Coaching Newsletter - February 2010 Coach AFL this month reviews the 2010 AFL National Coaching Conference which was recently held in Adelaide. Think you could coach an AFL team? Then test yourself with the Toyota AFL Dream Team Competition. We provide a drill that will test your player’s ability to kick and mark the ball whilst fatigued. The newsletter also provides updates from states and a calendar of coaching events coming up in certain states. 2010 AFL National Coaching Conference Over the weekend from Friday 29th – Sunday 31st of January the AFL held the 2010 AFL National Coaching Conference in Adelaide at AAMI Stadium in the new Adelaide Crows Training and Entertainment facility. The conference was again a resounding success with over 570 coaches in attendance. Over 100 umpire coaches participated in the 2010 AFL National Umpire Coaching Conference which was being held in conjunction with the 2010 AFL National Coaching Conference. This was a significant step in bringing playing, coaching and umpiring together as integral parts of football rather than seeing them as separate entities. The conference was opened by SANFL Executive Commissioner Leigh Whicker. He was followed by an enthusiastic Mark Williams (Port Adelaide FC) who delivered the opening keynote address that analysed the ‘Journey to Modern Coaching’ followed by Michael Broadbridge (West Coast Eagles FC) who considered ‘Moving on From the Noughties’ and the possible trends for coaching in the future. On Saturday participants attended elective sessions on many different aspects of the game including strategy and tactics, club culture, developing fitness, learning styles and coaching youth etc.

We dodged a bullet last round with news that Gary Ablett’s knee injury isn’t as bad as first thought. He’s now an outside chance to face Richmond this week, which would relieve the thousands of coaches that traded him in last round. Enjoy this week’s rave and good luck to everyone for the upcoming round. NO SIGN OF HOME SICKNESS GET READY TO POUNCE!
