Leone COPYRIGHT 2000, COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA Preface House Joint Resolution No. 530 and Senate Joint Resolution No. 345 from the 1999 Session directed a JLARC review of issues related to the care and maintenance of burial sites of Revolutionary War veterans. Virginia currently has a program to help provide for the care and maintenance of Confederate veteran gravesites, but has no similar program for veterans of the American Revolution. This final report provides a listing of Revolutionary War veteran burials that updates a list printed in the interim report for this study. The final report also contains recommendations and funding options for a program to provide care for these burial sites. JLARC staff estimate that there are about 560 cemetery sites and 705 grave markers that are potentially eligible for participation in a maintenance program re- ceiving State support. Some of the sites already receive certain maintenance care, so State assistance would serve to either help defray some of the current expenditures made by caretakers, or help them provide a higher level of maintenance care. Other sites receive little or no maintenance attention. Therefore, a program of State assis- tance may help to stimulate new maintenance activities at these sites. Cost estimates for a program of State-assisted maintenance care depend on a number of assumptions, and will require adjustment as the nature of the program is defined and based upon program experience. However, estimated costs at this time for a program providing State payments or tax credits of five dollars per Revolutionary War grave range from about $2,225 to $7,400 a year (plus minimal administrative expenses). A program offering baseline payments of $50 per cemetery is estimated to cost about $41,900 to $55,000 per year (including administrative costs). Finally, a pro- gram that provides funding beyond the $50 per cemetery baseline payment — for pur- poses that include the initial clean-up of neglected sites, extraordinary maintenance, and grants (or tax credits) to attract routine maintenance care to neglected sites — could cost around $100,000 per year in the early years of the program, and between $54,000 and $95,500 per year after the program has matured (with administrative costs included). At the national park, 637 veterans of France who served and died in the American Revolution are recognized at the French Memorial Cemetery, and there are 99 colonial veterans who are honored on a memorial tablet. It is estimated that only about 50 of the 637 French veterans are actually buried at the cemetery. It is not known which veterans among the 637 are the ones buried at the cemetery, or how many and which ones are actually buried anywhere on Virginia soil. In many ways, he is right. Christmas, for me, is guided by traditional rituals and symbols. Because I live a very busy life and work in an academic setting divided up into quarterly cycles, the rituals I have marked on the calendar help me to make sure I do everything I want to do in the short amount of time I have to do it in. Along with the rituals, the symbols serve as mental touchstones for me; focusing my attention, my thoughts, my reflections, my memories, and my prayers, on the many meanings of Christmas. My own Christmas rituals start in Advent with two traditional symbols of Christmas, the advent wreath and the nativity. On my birthday, which is exactly two weeks before Christmas, I buy a Christmas tree. (I am not sure what the symbolism is, but it sure is pretty.) As I grade final exams and projects for my students, I reward myself for getting through piles and hours of grading by taking breaks every now and then to decorate for Christmas. According to my ritual schedule, grades and Christmas decorations have to be completed by December 18. I then have two weeks to savor and reflect upon the wonder, beauty, and love of Christmas.

    ST MARY’S ITTERINGHAM CHURCHYARD SURVEY The survey of gravestones inside Itteringham Church and in the Churchyard covers all the legible grave markers and in many cases has involved lengthy scrutiny of older stones to make out the text. Where there are gaps in what is decipherable, they are noted. We think it unlikely anyone would glean more information from looking at the stones themselves. Please see our selection of photos of the churchyard and selected stones. For some stones we have added information from the parish registers, most of which are lodged with the Norfolk Record Office. Clearly there are many more burials than there are surviving gravestones. For ease of surveying we divided the stones into 9 sections, which are used in the numbering system below.     Elmwood Cemetery: A Walking Tour of Burlington's History A Historic Guidebook by University of Vermont Students 2008 i INTRODUCTION Scott A. McLaughlin The Elmwood Cemetery is one of the oldest community cemeteries in Burlington, Vermont. In its landscape and monuments, the cemetery captures the community's earliest history. Few, however, visit the cemetery and little is known about most of those buried in the cemetery. Some prominent and recognizable names appear on some of the headstones and monuments but most have never ventured into the cemetery because of its locked gates. One of the functions of this booklet is to expose people to what lies on the other side of the cemetery's iron fence. These locked gates are a result of vandalism and misuse of the cemetery by some members of the public. The authors encourage visitors to take the time, request the gates be open for them, and walk through Burlington’s history as they tour Elmwood Cemetery. ExEcuTivE SuMMARy The Mohawk Valley Battlefield Ethnography Project was designed to document the relationships between contemporary Indian peoples and the events that occurred in central New York during the mid to late eighteenth century. The particular focus was Fort Stanwix, located near the Oneida Carry, which linked the Mohawk and St. Lawrence Rivers via Wood Creek, and the Oriskany Battlefield. Because of its strategic location, Fort Stanwix was the site of several critical treaties between the British and the Iroquois and, following the American Revolution, between the latter and the United States. This region was the homeland of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy whose neutrality or military support was desired by both the British and the rebels during the Revolution. The Battle of Oriskany, 6 August 1777, occurred as the Tryon County militia, aided by Oneida warriors, was marching to relieve the British siege of Ft.
