Ensure the recognition of our associated Traditional Knowledge to certain indigenous biological resources. Advocates for the developmental and human rights concerns of the Khoi and San communities. It comprises of five historical Khoi and San communities that existed for thousands of years in South Africa as vetted in the official government reports called the Status Quo reports. The five main groupings are: (i) San (ii) Griqua (iii) Nama (iv) Cape Khoi (v) Koranna. Khoi-San (aka Hottentots, Khoi, Bushmen, and San) are the first homo sapiens to roam South Africa. The Khoi-San were originally Stone Age hunter-gatherers. They roamed in small bands, living a precarious but peaceful existence, dependent entirely on the bounty of nature for the animals they could hunt and the plants and roots that they could gather. They made use of small bows shooting poisoned arrows. They

Because there is so little difference in culture, light skins have made possible easy entry into the hite community. One social worker estimates that in recent years 25,000 have left the Cape to establish White identities in the Transvaal.

    6TH SOUTH AFRICAN ARMOURED DIVISION By J.C. von Winterbach, Scott Sutherland, Mike Bersiks, Rex Barret and Barry Cooper. Beginning The idea of a South African Armoured Division was born out of the chaos of the Western Desert Campaign, the Of- ficers in the 1st and 2nd South African Infantry Divisions felt the need for their own armour instead of depending on other Commonwealth Armoured Units. The formation of two strong Armoured Divisions was first discussed between Lt. Gen. G. E. Brink and rimeP Minister (Field Marshal) J.C. Smuts in April 1941. At that point time, South Africa was struggling to maintain the manpo- wer needed to sustain the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions in the field due to the political divisions in the Country. The 3rd South African Infantry Division was based in South Africa and provided the pool from which reinforcements were drawn to supplement the 1st and 2nd Infantry Divisions. A re-organisation committee met for the first time in May 1942 to discuss the armour option, it was decided to send three Infantry Battalions for armour training in August 1942, but the plan was rudely interrupted when Rommel launched his attack on the Gazala line in late May 1942. Nine days after the final El Alamein offensive the South African Divisions were pulling back to regroup. The plan was for the 1st Infantry Division that was withdrawn to Quassasin and that its 1st Brigade would return to South Africa to regroup with the 7th Infantry Brigade in Madagascar to form the 1st South African Armoured Division and the 1st Infantry Divisions 2nd and 3rd Brigades would remain in Egypt to form the 6th South African Armoured Division, which would replace the 2nd Infantry Division that had been captured at Tobruk in June 1942.

It has not been submitted in any previous application for a degree. i Abstract South African social relations in the second decade of democracy remain framed by race. Spatial and social lived realities, the continued importance of belonging – to feel part of a community, mean that identifying as ‘coloured’ in South Africa continues to be contested, fluid and often ambiguous. This thesis considers the changing social location of ‘coloured’ teachers through the narratives of former and current teachers and students. Education is used as a site through which to explore the wider social impacts of social and spatial engineering during and subsequent to apartheid. Two key themes are examined in the space of education, those of racial identity and of respect. These are brought together in an interwoven narrative to consider whether or not ‘coloured’ teachers in the post-apartheid period are respected and the historical trajectories leading to the contemporary situation. Two main concerns are addressed. The first considers the question of racial identification to constructions of self-identity. Working with post-colonial theory and notions of mimicry and ambivalence, the relationship between teachers and the identifier ‘coloured’ is shown to be problematic and contested. Second, and connected to teachers’ engagement with racialised identities, is the notion of respect. As with claims to identity and racial categorisation, the concept of respect is considered as mutable and dynamic and rendered with contextually subjective meanings that are often contested and ambivalent.

    Swaziland's Proposed Land Deal with South Africa - The Case of Ingwavuma and Kangwane* By Wolfgang Senftleben Since the Gambia united with Senegal under a Confederation recently, Swaziland (with an area of 17 363 sq.km) has been the smallest country in mainland Africa' (followed by Dj ibouti with 21 783 sq.km), but this could change very soon. In mid-1982 it was announced that the Republic of South Africa is willing to transfer two of its land areas totalling approximately 10 000 sq.km to the Kingdom of Swaziland. Together, these two areas would increase Swaziland's size by more than 60 per cent and give the hitherto land-locked state2 access to the sea with a potential port at Kosi Bay, just below Mozambique. The principal benefits for both countries are only too obvious: For Swaziland it means a realization of a long-standing dream of the late King Sobhuza II to incorporate all lands of the traditionally Swazi realm, besides ending Swaziland's status as a land-locked state. For South Africa it would be a major success of her apartheid policy (or territorial separation) by excommunicating two of its African tribaI areas with a population of together 850 000 people, which would give South Africa a tacit quasi-re­ cognition of her homeland policy, besides the advantage of creating a buffer zone between white-ruled South Africa and Marxist-orientated Mozambique for security reasons. Warwick2 Diocesan College, Cape Town Introduction Commemorative statues, plaques and monuments from decades past remain widespread across both the urban and rural South Africa landscape. Included amongst these is the stone likeness of General Tim Lukin in Cape Town: just one of such structures intended to encapsulate the emotions and memories of those who commissioned it. The South African involvement at Delville Wood ninety years ago would still resonate with some of the country’s population; those who at some stage have delved into reading up on the history of our participation in the First World War. However mention of the Battle of Sandfontein during the Union invasion of German South West Africa in 1914 to the same reasonably historically literate grouping, would from the larger proportion of them, most probably elicit an admittance of ignorance. Only the well-read enthusiast of South African military history would be aware of Lukin’s roles at both Delville Wood and Sandfontein, let alone how the latter engagement constituted one of the bleakest moments in the General’s career. This article revives debate about this long forgotten First World War military clash in Africa: the first full set battle-piece in which the two year old Union Defence Force was involved, and which resulted in a defeat for the South African forces.
