To facilitate identification of these unusual species, we have included a diagnosis of the tribe Scatellini and of the genus Limnellia and have also provided an annotated key to the South American genera of this tribe. The descriptions are supplemented with illustrations, photographs, and scan- ning electron micrographs of external structures and structures of the male terminalia. Key words: Shore flies, Ephydrinae, Scatellini, L. flavifrontis, L.

FLY TIMES ISSUE 64, Spring, 2020 Stephen D. Gaimari, editor Plant Pest Diagnostics Branch California Department of Food & Agriculture 3294 Meadowview Road Sacramento, California 95832, USA Tel: (916) 738-6671 FAX: (916) 262-1190 Email: [email protected] Welcome to the latest issue of Fly Times! This issue is brought to you during the Covid-19 pandemic, with many of you likely cooped up at home, with insect collections worldwide closed for business! Perhaps for this reason this issue is pretty heavy, not just with articles but with images. There were many submissions to the Flies are Amazing! section and the Dipterists Lairs! I hope you enjoy them! Just to touch on an error I made in the Fall issue’s introduction… In outlining the change to “Spring” and “Fall” issues, instead of April and October issues, I said “But rest assured, I WILL NOT produce Fall issues after 20 December! Nor Spring issues after 20 March!” But of course I meant no Spring issues after 20 June! Instead of hitting the end of spring, I used the beginning. Oh well… Thank you to everyone for sending in such interesting articles! I encourage all of you to consider contributing articles that may be of interest to the Diptera community, or for larger manuscripts, the Fly Times Supplement series. Fly Times offers a great forum to report on research activities, to make specimen requests, to report interesting observations about flies or new and improved methods, to advertise opportunities for dipterists, to report on or announce meetings relevant to the community, etc., with all the digital images you wish to provide.

  • New Discoveries in New World Atissini (Diptera: Ephydridae)
ISRAEL JOURNAL OF ENTOMOLOGY, Vol. 49 (2), pp. 11–26 (13 June 2019) This contribution is published to honor Dr. Amnon Freidberg, a scientist, a colleague and a friend, on the occasion of his 75th birthday. New discoveries in New World Atissini as revealed in revision of Pelignellus Sturtevant & Wheeler (Diptera: Ephydridae) Tadeusz Zatwarnicki1 & Wayne N. Mathis2 1Institute of Biology, Opole University, ul. Oleska 22, 45-052 Opole, Poland. E-mail: [email protected] 2Department of Entomology, National Museum of Natural History, MRC 169, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC 20013-7012, USA. E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pelignellus is resurrected from synonymy with Atissa and is revised. The genus and both included species—P. subnudus Sturtevant & Wheeler from the USA (California) and P. freidbergi n. sp. from Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Panama)—are described with an emphasis on structures of the male terminalia, which are fully illustrated. The species are keyed and their distribution data are provided. For perspective and to facilitate recognition of genera and species, the tribe Atissini is diagnosed and a key to genera is provided. KEYWORDS: Ephydridae, Atissini, Pelignellus, shore flies, New World, Central America, identification key, new species.

In: Kahanpää J, Salmela J (Eds) Checklist of the Diptera of Finland. ZooKeys 441: 339–346. doi: 10.3897/zookeys.441.7448 Abstract A checklist of 112 species of shore flies (Ephydridae, Diptera) recorded from Finland is presented. Com- paring this to the list of Hackman (1980), 52 changes are made: 25 species are added (all but one recorded after 1980), 18 misidentifications are deleted, 5 junior synonyms are replaced and 5 updated generic combinations are given. Keywords Checklist, Finland, Diptera, Ephydridae Introduction Shore flies (Ephydridae) are dark coloured, dull to shining, 1–6 mm long flies. Most species develop in aquatic or semi-aquatic conditions, feeding of algae, bacteria, yeasts or even decaying animal matter and excrements; or they are phytophagous and mining in leaves or stems. The group is divided into 5 subfamilies and 19 tribes (Zatwarnicki 1992), of which 15 could potentially be found in Finland.

A Phylogenetic Study of the Tribe Dryxini Zatwarnicki (Diptera: Ephydridae) WAYNE N.MATHIS and TADEUSZ ZATWARNK W9\ I SMITHSONIAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO ZOOLOGY • NUMBER 617 SERIES PUBLICATIONS OF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Emphasis upon publication as a means of "diffusing knowledge" was expressed by the first Secretary of the Smithsonian. In his formal plan for the Institution, Joseph Henry outlined a program that included the following statement: "It is proposed to publish a series of reports, giving an account of the new discoveries in science, and of the changes made from year to year in all branches of knowledge." This theme of basic research has been adhered to through the years by thousands of titles issued in series publications under the Smithsonian imprint, commencing with Smithsonian Contributions to Knowledge in 1848 and continuing with the following active series: Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology Smithsonian Contributions to Botany Smithsonian Contributions to the Earth Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to the Marine Sciences Smithsonian Contributions to Paleobiology Smithsonian Contributions to Zoology Smithsonian Folklife Studies Smithsonian Studies in Air and Space Smithsonian Studies in History and Technology In these series, the Institution publishes small papers and full-scale monographs that report the research and collections of its various museums and bureaux or of professional colleagues in the world of science and scholarship. The publications are distributed by mailing lists to libraries, universities, and similar institutions throughout the world. Papers or monographs submitted for series publication are received by the Smithsonian Institution Press, subject to its own review for format and style, only through departments of the various Smithsonian museums or bureaux, where the manuscripts are given substantive review.

Five volumes have been published. The series is now jointly sponsored by the North American Dipterists’ Society, with individual volumes edited and produced either by Paul Arnaud at San Francisco or by Chris Thompson at Washington.
