For the next 20 years, settlers from across the country bought land, farmed, and raised families in the area. Appendix: Additional Images of Journalists in South Park By Todd Smilovitz Episode 1: “Cartman Gets an Anal Probe.” First aired August 13, 1997. Directed by: Uncredited. Written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Aliens abduct Eric Cartman and install a satellite dish in his rectum. News 8 reports on crop circles, which actually look like Eric in outline. A field reporter says, “Could it be that aliens are trying to make contact with us here on Earth?” Episode 2: “Volcano.” First aired August 20, 1997. Directed by: Uncredited. Written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. A volcano erupts near South Park while the boys are camping on its mountainside. Mostly banal reporting on the story by HBC standards, but Tom’s thoughts on the successful rescue of the boys is a bit melodramatic. “And now these humble people can rejoice and celebrate their jovial victory over nature. I’m getting word that the chef of the school cafeteria wants to sing a song about this thrilling struggle of humanity.” Episode 3: “Weight Gain 4000.” First aired August 27, 1997. Directed by: Uncredited. Written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. Eric Cartman, already overweight, begins inhaling Weight Gain 4000 to become buff. Instead, he becomes a Jabba the Hut look-alike. Meanwhile, Kathy Lee Gifford is coming to town to present Eric with an award for best essay on the rainforest. He actually wrote the essay by copying from On Walden Pond. Unfortunately for Eric, Kathy Lee is almost assassinated and leaves town just before handing the award to Eric. Eric says, “Hey, wait a minute, when do I get to be on television?” The reporter answers, “Forget it, kid.

What has become of this city? There used to be laws, justice. Not anymore. Crime is out of control. Cats are missing. And people are being victimised. We were supposed to protect people who can’t protect themselves. Now, superheroes are torn apart by political differences. We’re two sides, at war. But war isn’t going to save our city. Time-travel is my only hope now. Legends tell of an ancient time, when a new kid united a kingdom, torn apart by a powerful stick. I have to go back, change the present if I can and find this cat. And in doing so, perhaps I can change what has happened-to all of us. So, yeah, welcome to South Park! It’s a quiet little mountain town, but currently, there seems to be a bit of a cheesing problem going on, cheesing being when you get high off of the liquid cats spray when marking their territory. Maybe you can help out? Which side of the conflict are you on, anyway? Independent: Ah, I suppose that’s fine, at least for the time being. Much like the mysterious vigilante Call Girl (Wendy), the alien Mint-Berry Crunch (Bradley) or goth witch Henrietta (Henrietta), you haven’t yet chosen a side in this war, but be warned; fence sitting won’t be tolerated for long. Or perhaps you fancy yourself a villain, like Professor Chaos (Butters). Coon and Friends: Coon and Friends are a local group of superpowered vigilantes led by, unsurprisingly, the Coon (Cartman). Other members include the Human Kite (Kyle), Mosquito (Clyde), Super Craig (Craig), Captain Diabetes (Scott) and Fastpass (Jimmy) Freedom Pals: An off-shoot set of superheroes, splintered away from Coon and Friends in protest at how they were treated, this group, led by Professor Timothy (Timmy), seeks to bring about ‘retribution, but with inclusion.’ Other members include Mysterion (Kenny), Toolshed (Stan), Tupperware (Token) and Wonder-Tweek (Tweek) Whatever the case, you are now 10 years old, and your gender and sexual orientation is a free choice.

P AJOVIĆ1 UNIVERSITY OF N OVI S AD FACULTY OF P HILOSOPHY THE (RE)SHAPING OF SOUTH PARK’S HUMOR THROUGH LITERARY REFERENCES 2 ABSTRACT. The paper examines the complex relationship between a lauded American animated sitcom South Park on the one side, and literature, especially satire, on the other side. Upon asserting the bond between literature and popular culture, numerous references presented in the show are pointed out, namely the stance the authors take on literature and the act of reading, the types and subtypes of humor exhibited, and topicality. Finally, using the writing of Mikhail Bakhtin, South Park itself is treated as literature as its type of humor is a continuation of an age-old literary tradition of laughter. The conclusion asserts this as it is revealed that South Park owes much of its popularity to the literary aspect of the humor exhibited in the show.
