This program was conducted at Preksha Dhyan Academy, Koba, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Ahmedabad is known for a large Jain cultural imprint, seat of finest academic institutions in India as well as being as the home of Mahatma Gandhi The objective of the program was to stress Jain philosophy and way of life and their relevance in today’s world to undergraduate and graduate students, PhD candidates, Professors, and school teachers and Jain professionals abroad and India who wish to have experiential immersion in Jain philosophy and way of life. The program was designed and conducted by International School for Jain Studies ‘ISJS.’ To ensure smooth conduct of the program, ISJS appointed Dr. S. N. Pandey as Academic Coordinator, Mrs. Khyati Patel as local program coordinator and Mr. Sushil Jana and Mr. Shivam Saxena from ISJS Delhi to support her. The program started on December 28th 2018 with an inaugural function. Sh. Samveg Lalbhai (Pramukh of Anandji Kalyanji Trust) was the Chief Guest. Sh. Shripal Shah (Trustee of Anandji Kalyanji Trust), Sh. Vijay Jain (Chairman, VPJ Group), Sh. Gautam Navalchand Shah (Ex-Mayor of Ahmedabad) and Sh. Shobhagmal Kataria (Founder, Kataria Group and Philanthropist) were also present in this function. Dr. Jaswant Modi (Sponsor for this Winter Program) and Dr. Sulekh Jain from USA also addressed the participants through Skype during this function. The program included a presentation of an outline of the program, self- introduction, tips for living in India (Guidelines book given to each participant) during the program along with a hand book on ‘Jainism for young inquisitives’ by ISJS to each participant. Participants were encouraged to choose and take other books published by ISJS. Jain Pathshala management also distributed a set of three books to each participant. The program concluded on January 07th 2019. 3 of 15 International School for Jain Studies (ISJS), India International School for Jain Studies was established by Dr Shugan C Jain and his friends Dr Sulekh Jain and Prof Cromwell Crawford as a ‘not-for-profit’ trust in 2005 to promote academic studies of Jainism in the universities of North America primarily and the world at large. The model for achieving this objective was to provide experiential and academic exposure of Jainism to university scholars by bringing them to India during summer annually. It implied providing non-sectoral, high standard academic exposures in the morning, group discussions in the afternoons and participation in rituals, meeting Jain saints and householders, visiting temples and pilgrimage places and finally living in Jain dharmshalas. So far 14 such annual summer schools have been successfully completed in India and two in Bangkok, each being improvised based on the experience of earlier year. From 2009 onwards, ISJS also started conducting similar programs abroad (two years at Mahidol University at Bangkok), Jain Yoga and application of ahimsa in schools to improve discipline and learning. A total of 646 such participants from 136 universities, 103 high schools and institutions and 21 countries have attended ISJS summer programs, resulting in Jain centres and chairs set-up in 10 additional universities in USA. ISJS also had conducted over 20 national and international seminars and published a dozen books. It has 80G, FCRA, ISBN, ISSN approval. ISJS organised first Winter Program from December 28th, 2018 to 7th January 2019 at Preksha Dhyan Academy, Koba, Gandhinagar, Gujarat. 4 of 15 INDIVIDUAL PARTICIPANT PROFILE Following twenty participants from USA, Ukraine, Singapore, France and India attended the program. The housing/location was very nice. I certainly learned a lot not only from lectures but from my fellow participants too. Experiences, like Palitana, which was definitely the best day. The lectures themselves were fine but could use improvement. Jainism is so rich and full of complex history, but we spent so much time on the basic philosophies. What is the history of the relationship with other Indian religions? What did Jainism take from Buddhism and Hinduism? What did it give to them? I hope these points will also be discussed in greater details in the next winter program. Anyways, in short, I learned so much here, met incredible people, and made wonderful memories. I do not forget anything about it. I thank you all so much for your hard work and dedication. I am so grateful for this opportunity. Jessica (USA) This has been a life changing experience. I am sure everyone will have plenty of helpful suggestions on how the program can improve. So I will only offer feedback on the things I found most beneficial.

Volume : 48 Issue No. : 48 Month : July, 2004 "A true monk is one who is not proud of his own lineage, beauty, gains and scriptural knowledge. Thus discarding all pride, he remains deeply immersed in the spiritual contemplation." JAIN SAINTS ACHARYA MAHAPRAGYA'S MESSAGE TO DR. MANMOHAN SINGh- THE NEW PRIME MINISTER OF INDIA One cannot think of a healthy individual and healthy society in the absence of healthy economic order. We consider your elevation as the Prime Minister of India an indication of a bright future for the country. You are capable of transforming the economic order of this country in such a way that the people living below the poverty line may fulfil their basic needs and may stay away from the line of affluence. In the course of our long Ahimsa Yatra the heart-rending spectacle of starving tribals that we saw in villages cannot even be imagined by those who live in towns and cities. Unless the ever-increasing gulf between the economic system and morality is bridged, economic prosperity may be beneficial for some people but not for all. I firmly believe that the transfer of power into the hands of a worthy person like you will pave the way for the creation of a healthy society. It is a fact that paucity of money is the cause of increasing violence in society, but it is also a fact that the impact of economic affluence is no less responsible for this spurt of violence. The greatest solution of the problem of the present lies in an economic system as well as in a social order which might be free from both poverty and plenty.

  • Palitanaa the Jain Pilgrimage Center
PALITANAA THE JAIN PILGRIMAGE CENTER THE MARVEL OF JAINISM AND THE RELIGIOUS ART he Palitana temples of Jainism are located on Mount Shatrunjaya, by the city of Palitana, in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat, India. The city of the same name, known previously as Padliptapur, has been nicknamed "City of Temples". Along with Sammet Shikhar, earlier in Bihar state, now of Jharkhand, the two sites are considered the holiest of all pilgrimage places by the Jain community. As the temple-city was built to be an abode for the divine, no one is allowed to stay overnight, including the priests. Every Jain believes that a visit to this group of temples is essential once in a life time to achieve nirvana or salvation.[3] The Jain's sacred site of Shatrunjay contains hundreds of Palitana temples. There are approximately 863 marble-carved temples on the hills. It is said that 23 Tirthankara (a human being who helps in achieving liberation and enlightenment), except Neminath (a liberated soul which has destroyed all of its karma), sanctified the hill temples by their visits. The main temple is dedicated to the Rishabha, the first Tirthankara; it is the holiest shrine for the Svetambara Murtipujaka Jain sect who are worshipers of images of gods. The Digambara sect of Jainism has only one temple here. The summit is situated at an elevation of 7,288 feet (2,221 m). Reaching it involves climbing over 3,750 stone steps. However, during the monsoon season the temples are closed for devotees. It takes approximately two hours to make the 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) climb.

7 Temple as Legal Body Aesthetics and the Legislation of Antiquity Legal texts reveal the philosophical underpinnings of temple administration. How do we define a temple as living or dead? Contemporary use at Jagat and Ekliṅgjī changes the materiality of the sites themselves. Is authentic history limited to a history that includes change—the object agent as an organic form? Or do we privi- lege heritage as the only way to preserve history through a selective process to curate the present at ancient monuments? In India the religious and legal status of deities raises the question of how to endow a god. And, as one can imagine in a setting where the life and death of monuments and the estate of a deity are in question, India becomes a place where the speech of architectural preservation models moves beyond the outdated simplistic rhetorical fantasies of iconoclasm to include the deaths of people, or “humanoclasm,” and, I would argue, humanity at large, rather than deities and their monuments alone. I coin the term “humanoclasm” here to describe acts of political murder as a result of art historical dispute. In South Asia, two of the most recent and famous examples of humanoclasm have been sparked by the archaeological sites of Ayodhyā in India and the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan. When the Bamiyan Buddhas fell to the Taliban in 2001, many in the art history department at the University of California, Berkeley, asked me what I thought of the Taliban’s destruction of these precious, ancient, enormous examples of Buddhist art. Like many, I could not unhinge these statues from the deaths of people for the same reasons.
