On the Feast of the Ascension, the church celebrates the return of Christ to the Father, his physical body leaving the earth behind. The Ascension of Our Lord, which occurred 40 days after Jesus Christ rose from the dead on , is the final act of our redemption that Christ began on . On this day, the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven (Luke 24:51; Mark 16:19; Acts 1:9-11). The reality of Christ's Ascension is so important that the creeds (the basic statements of belief) of Christianity all affirm, in the words of the Apostles' Creed, that "He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead." The denial of the Ascension is as grave a departure from Christian teaching as is denial of Christ's Resurrection. Christ's bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, after our death, but as glorified bodies, after the resurrection of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming mankind, Christ not only offered salvation to our souls but began the restoration of the material world itself to the glory that God intended before Adam's fall. The Feast of the Ascension marks the beginning of the first , or nine days of prayer. Before His Ascension, Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit to His apostles. Their prayer for the coming of the Holy Spirit, which began on Ascension Thursday, ended with the descent of the Holy Spirit on Sunday, ten days later. Today, many Catholics recall that first novena by praying the Novena to the Holy Spirit between Ascension and Pentecost, asking for the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit. ~ by Scott Richert Schedule 15 — May 23 Mass Intentions—In accordance with the guidelines from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, Mass Saturday 05/15: SA Mass 5:30 p.m. stipends are deposited in a separate checking account. The 2021 Catholic Sharing Appeal We’ve got quite a tall task: going out into the world and proclaiming the to every living creature. We’re reminded today, on Ascension Sunday, that even though Christ ascended body and soul into Heaven, He still aids the work of the Church today. And our mission is impossible without His grace! Christ wants us to rely upon Him. But this doesn’t necessarily mean depending on miracles and signs. It also means trusting that he’ll bless our more practical efforts to build the Church and proclaim the Gospel. At St. Anthony and Our Lady of the Hills, we’ve discerned that the Catholic Sharing Appeal is a vital way of helping us live out our mission. We depend on God’s grace, not only to see this important endeavor through to completion, but to inspire each of us to do our part. Let’s pray as a parish community that we all might be moved by the Lord to contribute to this mission, the same one He originally entrusted to the Apostles. Thank you for your past generosity in support of the annual appeal and our parishes and for what we can accomplish this year! To save postage, you may drop your CSA envelope in the collection basket, and we will forward it to the Diocese. PLEASE make your check payable to the Catholic Sharing Appeal.

Peter’s Pence Collection: May 22 & 23—Next week, we will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection, which is a way to support the Universal Church and the work of the , including helping Pope Francis with the funds to carry out his charitable works. These works benefit our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Please be generous. MAY IS MARY’S MONTH May, like October, is a specific month of the year when special devotions are performed in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, culminating with the Feast of the Visitation on May 31. October is more associated with the Rosary, May with her motherhood: The new Feast of Mary, Mother of the Church, is on May 24 this year. In ancient Greece and Rome, the month of May was dedicated to pagan goddesses connected to fertility and springtime (Artemis and Flora, respectively). This, combined with other European rituals commemorating the new season of spring, led many Western cultures to view May as a month of life and motherhood. This was long before “Mother’s Day” was ever conceived, though the modern celebration is closely related to this innate desire to honor maternity during the spring months. Change in Translation of prayers from the USCCB What has been changed in the conclusion of some of the ? Specifically, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments pointed out that the current translation of Collect prayers – which concludes “[…] in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever” – is incorrect. There is no mention of “one” in the Latin, and “Deus” in the Latin text refers to Christ. Therefore, the correct translation, which is already reflected in the Missal in other languages (including our own USCCB Misal Romano) is simply: “[…] in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.” The Cardinal Prefect has pointed out the importance of affirming this Christological truth amid the religious pluralism of today’s world. In light of the Congregation’s most recent direction in this matter, the Latin Rite Bishops of the USCCB have voted to amend no. 54 of the U.S. text of the General Instruction of the to reflect the change, and the Congregation has confirmed this decision, as it already has for the Episcopal Conferences of England and Wales, Ireland, and Canada. This change to the concluding doxology of orations implemented on , February 17, 2021. The words “one God, for ever and ever” are simply replaced with “God, for ever and ever.” Congratulations Nathan! We congratulate Nathan Burdette on his graduation from West Virginia University yesterday. Nathan has also been accepted and will be attending the West Virginia University College of Law this fall. May God bless Nathan as he continues his studies.
