The Question of ‘Race’ in the Pre-colonial Southern Sahara BRUCE S. HALL One of the principle issues that divide people in the southern margins of the Sahara Desert is the issue of ‘race.’ Each of the countries that share this region, from Mauritania to Sudan, has experienced civil violence with racial overtones since achieving independence from colonial rule in the 1950s and 1960s. Today’s crisis in Western Sudan is only the latest example. However, very little academic attention has been paid to the issue of ‘race’ in the region, in large part because southern Saharan racial discourses do not correspond directly to the idea of ‘race’ in the West. For the outsider, local racial distinctions are often difficult to discern because somatic difference is not the only, and certainly not the most important, basis for racial identities. In this article, I focus on the development of pre-colonial ideas about ‘race’ in the Hodh, Azawad, and Niger Bend, which today are in Northern Mali and Western Mauritania. The article examines the evolving relationship between North and West Africans along this Sahelian borderland using the writings of Arab travellers, local chroniclers, as well as several specific documents that address the issue of the legitimacy of enslavement of different West African groups. Using primarily the Arabic writings of the Kunta, a politically ascendant Arab group in the area, the paper explores the extent to which discourses of ‘race’ served growing nomadic power. My argument is that during the nineteenth century, honorable lineages and genealogies came to play an increasingly important role as ideological buttresses to struggles for power amongst nomadic groups and in legitimising domination over sedentary communities. -

Let’s Set The Stage… Ibn Battuta was born in Tangier, part of modern-day Morocco, on February 25, 1304. He was raised by his family with a focus on education. As a result, Ibn Battuta’s urge to travel was spurred by interest in finding the best teachers and the best libraries in the world. Ibn Battuta was a Muslim student who studied law. He wanted to make the pilgrimage to Mecca, called the “hajj,” as soon as possible, out of eagerness and devotion to his Islamic faith. 2 2/4/2020 Ibn Battuta traveled for thirty years, mostly through lands where Islam was the predominate (main) religion and where people spoke Arabic because of the spread of the religion. When he returned from his travels, he wrote a book to reflect on his experiences throughout the Islamic world. On June 14, 1325, at the age of 21, Ibn Battuta rode out of Tangier on a donkey, the start of his journey to Mecca. 3 2/4/2020 Ibn Battuta stayed at a madrasas (Islamic college) as he made his way to Tunis. -

The Archaeology and Heritage of the Sudanese Red Sea Region: Importance, Findings, and Challenges AHMED ADAM Head Department of Archaeology - University of Khartoum Director of the Red Sea Project for Archaeological Research Abstract This paper seeks to shed a high light on the archaeological sites discovered in the area of Suakin, Arkaweet, and Sinkat as a part of the project of the department of Archaeology ß university of Khartoum, so, the archaeological sites discovered in this region belong to different periods such as Pre-Historic, Medieval, Islamic, and others are unknown, which means that the region used to link the Red Sea Cultures with those on the central Sudan and Egypt far north and Eretria in the east. Through this study I am also seeking to evaluate the field work (Archaeological and Ethnographic) conducted in the area of Arkaweet and Sinkat town, and Suakin port, then to put a plan for the managing and protecting the archaeologi- cal sites and ethnographic materials. Therefore I will follow or apply a number of approaches in this study such as description, survey analysis of the sites and its contents as well a comparison will be made between the results of the present study with the results of the previous studies in the field of archeology and ethnography conducted on other sites in the Sudanese Red Sea Region. Destaca-se que muito provavelmente, os geógrafos do Islã medieval, em suas vertentes sistemática e corográfica, foram uma espécie de “ponte” que faltava na evolução do pensamento geográfico entre os gregos da Antiguidade e os precursores das grandes escolas clássicas europeias nos séculos XIX e XX. Assim sendo, o artigo apresenta uma abordagem alternativa da obra de Ibn-Battuta não só para o estudo da literatura de viagens, mas também, para a Carstologia. Abstract This study is intended to address, under a new approach, the contributions of Ibn-Battuta to the development of certain areas of geography, especially the anthropogenic use of karst as well as the cultural use of caves. Noteworthy to mention is that, most likely, the geographers from medieval Islam were a kind of missing “bridge” in the evolution of geographical thought among the ancient Greeks and the precursors of the great European classical schools in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Thus, this article presents an alternative approach to the work of Ibn-Battuta not only for the study of travel literature but also to the study of karstology. -
The Chinese Naval Expeditions of Zheng He
THE CHINESE NAVAL EXPEDITIONS OF ZHENG HE In 1935, a Chinese official in Fujian province found a long-forgotten stone tablet that recounted one of the greatest series ofnaval expeditions in world history. The tablet briefly describes the seven voyages of the Chinese admiral, explorer, and diplomat Zheng He (1371-1435), who traveled as far as Arabia and the east coast of Africa and visited more than thirty present-day countries. Born in 1371 in Yun-nan (Kunyang) province, he was drafted at age ten to serve as an orderly in the army, which had just succeeded in overthrowing the Mongols and reestablishing Chinese authority under the Ming dynasty. Under the command of the Prince of Yen, Zheng He rose rapidly in rank, proving himself strong, loyal, ambitious, and a skilled junior officer. In 1403, when the Prince of Yen seized the Celestial Throne from a rival, Zheng He fought bravely on his behalf and was rewarded with an administrative position within the royal household. Two years later, he was promoted to commander in chief of one of the largest flotillas in world history. From 1405 to 1422, Zheng He led six different expeditions that took him as far as Java, Sumatra, Vietnam, India, and Arabia and to trading centers in east Africa (see Map). For the most part, these were diplomatic missions, centered on the exchange of ambassadors, presents, and tribute. Among the gifts he brought back to China for the Yongle Emperor were giraffes and lions. In exchange for tribute, Zheng He presented gifts from the emperor that included finely made porcelain dishes, rare silks, precious metals, and manufactured goods. -

Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 2007 Volume II: Voyages in World History Before 1500 Ibn Battuta's Journey by Land and by Sea: Investigating Cultural Landscapes Curriculum Unit 07.02.07 by Paula Ranciato Introduction The unit Journey by Land and Sea: Investigating Cultural Landscapes will allow my students to put faces on individuals who had the courage to challenge themselves take risks and transmit knowledge of another culture through their writings and observations. The unit will focus on the travels of Abu Abdullah Muhammad Ibn Battuta. When Ibn Battuta was 21 he began his pilgrimage or hajj to Mecca some 3000 miles from his home. He returned to Morocco in 1355 after visiting 44 countries and traveling approximately 75,000 miles. By walking in his shoes, students can demonstrate how the world was interconnected rather than disconnected. The unit is written with a wide range of abilities in mind and would meet the needs of students from 9th to 12th grade; some sections could be modified for use with middle school students. The unit will focus on map skills, reading and interpreting primary source documents, using visual resources and constructing visuals from the information they have gained. Rationale My goal as the social studies teacher for the High School Credit program at New Haven Adult Education is to guide and facilitate learning. This teaching experience is by far the most challenging and yet the most rewarding of my life. My students live, work and in some cases raise their family in an urban environment. -
2017. Blin and Arab Historians in the Twelfth Century
BLIN AND ARAB HISTORIANS IN THE TWELFTH CENTURY. Presented on the Blin Conference Stuttgart, Germany in July 21-23, 2017. Idris Abubeker (PhD) Abstract The ancient history of the Blin still needs to be investigated. Within this premise, this paper discusses three Arabic texts written in the twelfth century in relation to the history of the Blin. Two of them were written by El-Idrissi the historian while the third one was a manuscript written by a poet called Ibn al-Qalaqis. I would argue that one of the texts of El- Idrissi and the manuscript of Ibn al-Qalaqis are discussed for the first time. Giving prominence for treatment of the two texts, may contribute to our knowledge of the study of Blin. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND The first inhabitant of the east Africa region is the Nilotic group. They dominated this region for thousands of years, until the advent of the Cushitic group that led them either to mix with them or to migrate out of that area or to settle in specific areas1. It is believed that the Cushitic group entered to this region from the Arabian Peninsula via Bab al-Mandab or from the Caucasus through Egypt between the fifth and third millennium BC. They relied on animals that could live in harsh desert life like camels and others. They developed architecture and music, as evidenced by the construction of pyramids in Egypt and the Church of Lalibela in Ethiopia and the ancient port of Adulis in Eritrea and others2. The demographics of these groups were spread throughout the region from southern Egypt to northern Kenya.
