We would like to acknowledge that the University at Bufalo operates on the traditional territory of the Seneca Nation, a Haudenosaunee/Six Nations Confederacy. Baird Point is an outdoor, Greek-style amphitheater located on the southern shore of Lake LaSalle. It was a gift to the University from the Baird Foundation and the Cameron Baird Foundation. The marble columns on the concrete platforms were once part of the old Federal Reserve Bank in downtown Buffalo. Following their relocation to the lake, the columns were dedicated as a memorial to servicemen and servicewomen.

4 COMMENCEMENT 2020 COMMENCEMENTCOMMENCEMENT 2020 2021 5 5 Greetings from the Dean

Nancy J. Smyth Dean and Professor

Congratulations to each of you in the class of 2021. Your faculty and staf, as well as your family and friends celebrate this important day of transition with you as you move from student to professional. Completing a MSW degree is a remarkable achievement at any time and doing so now is even more impressive. We, your faculty, have witnessed your resilience throughout all the challenges of the past year.

You now join the more than 8000 alumni of the University at Bufalo School of Social Work who make a diference in people’s lives. Your future as recognized leaders in your community will refect and embody the values and ethics you acquired in your internships, classroom work, and research in the School of Social Work.

Through continuing education, the hallmark of lifelong learners, you will update and expand needed competencies and expertise to ensure you always use best practices as social workers. Staying up to date in this rapidly evolving environment is a daunting task for all of us and you will come to rely on professional learning networks to ensure you use the most efective tools to do your work and to disseminate your knowledge across transdisciplinary felds of practice.

Local and global racism and other forms of oppression, economic deprivation, inadequate education and reduced access to key services continue to confront our society: social workers are essential to efect needed change. Fear and its cousin, hatred, are too often the lens by which people reject those who are diferent. People are desperate for your cutting edge knowledge, skills and technologies to bring needed change to the lives of individuals, families, and communities facing violence, poverty, substance abuse, racism, homelessness, chronic diseases, psychological trauma and oppression in societies that disenfranchises and stigmatizes them.

The importance of the work you will do cannot be overstated. Your ability to establish relationships is the currency of professional practice. Your interactions with people, as you forge practice and research partnerships, will enable individuals, groups, families, organizations and communities to heal and move forward to reclaim wellness and wholeness in their lives and in the world around them. Each life you touch will afect hundreds of others. This ripple efect has more power than any of us realize in the moment and in the course of your professional careers, will afect hundreds if not thousands of lives.

Much like the School you entered, you will grow and change as a professional. Your generosity as individuals and through your Graduate Student Association and committee work has been invaluable to our faculty and staf developing transformative curriculum strategies, strengthening our trauma-informed and human rights perspectives, and supporting our emerging community- based participatory research infrastructure. Your enthusiasm about your educational experience is a crucial element of our rank as one of the top 25 graduate schools of social work. Today marks the beginning of your new connection with the School. From this point forward, you join the ranks of graduates who are promoters of our profession, representatives of the strengths of our programs, mentors to new cohorts of students and graduates, and donors who help build our scholarship funds to ensure that all qualifed students can attend our programs. We look forward to hearing from you on our Facebook page or through Twitter or our LinkedIn Alumni Group as you enter the workforce and as your careers evolve. We anticipate a long and mutually fruitful connection to you through our Alumni Association, our School magazine, Mosaics, our Podcast Series, inSocialWork, and through your ongoing contacts with our faculty and staf. Like your families, we are proud of your achievements and rejoice in your current and future accomplishments. On behalf of the faculty and staf, I congratulate you, and welcome you to the profession of Social Work.
