The New York Energy Manager: How Building Energy Data Have Been Utilized to Drive Value at SUNY Buffalo State College and Stony Brook University

ABSTRACT
Energy managers from Buffalo State College (BSC) and Stony Brook University (SBU) will share how they’ve used different types of data ranging from campus level electrical meters to - - asset level submeters to drive energy savings, manage costs, and reduce greenhouse gas - - emissions. Tom Lanzilotta will discuss SBU’s experience with deep submetering at the Stony Brook Recreation Center and Mike Madigan will present results from the current BSC Campus Energy Manager demonstration project. Rebecca Hughes, New York Power Authority, will speak to the role of technology in managing energy on a college campus.
Beginning in January 2017, Buffalo State College (BSC) initiated a two year pilot program with - O’Brien & Gere (OBG) to demonstrate the energy savings potential and sustainability benefits derived from having a Campus Energy Manager (CEM). The objectives of the part time BSC - CEM program include managing campus energy use, reducing campus operating costs, increasing energy awareness, and improving operation and maintenance energy effectiveness. Using campus wide electrical meter data and energy analysis tools available through New York - Energy Manager (NYEM), the CEM program demonstrated a 10% reduction in energy costs during its first year (2017).
In December 2017, Stony Brook University partnered with the New York Power Authority’s New York Energy Manager to install asset level submeters at the campus’ Rec Center. The project is - showing a promising payback period of less than four years even before considering - non energy benefits like carbon reductions and operational efficiencies. - This panel seeks to demonstrate that, when used and applied, energy data can drive value.

As Director, Energy Efficiency and Planning, Rob Neimeier provides program and project management to public and private institutions with energy reduction and climate action goals under NYS Executive Orders 88 and 166, and the REV Campus Challenge. His technical experience includes facilitated stakeholder engagement, energy efficiency audit management, climate action planning, and energy master planning. Clients include University at Albany, SUNY ESF, SUNY Oneonta, College at Brockport, City University of New York, and Ithaca College. Rob has presented or co-presented with clients on Energy Efficiency and Energy Master Planning topics to professional organizations including the SUNY Physical Plant Administrators Association (PPAA), State of New York Sustainability Conference, International District Energy Association (IDEA), and the Keystone Association of Physical Plant Administrators (KAPPA).
Mr. Lanzilotta is currently involved with over $70 million in energy conservation and energy performance projects involving all aspects of HVAC, lighting and controls at Stony Brook University. Additionally, Mr. Lanzilotta monitors, analyzes, and verifies over $55 million in utility expenditures from over 250 buildings including hospital, research labs, residences, dining, office space, and central heating and cooling plants. He is an expert in sub metering implementation, communications, and programming and currently manages over 370 data points, verifying savings from energy projects and identifying issues with building management systems through data analytics. Professional credentials include a master’s degree in Energy Management form NYIT, Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified Energy Auditor. Mr. Lanzilotta was named NY Chapter Energy Manager of the Year in 2016.
Rebecca Hughes is the program manager for marketing and training for the New York Energy Manager (NYEM), a virtual energy management service of the New York Power Authority (NYPA). Ms. Hughes is responsible for training building operators and facility managers to utilize NYEM’s secure, web-based platform to view real-time energy use data and to identify and implement energy and cost savings measures. Prior to joining NYPA, Ms. Hughes was responsible for the administration of NYSERDA's Career Pathways program, on-the- job training incentive program for businesses, and workforce development training programs as well as administration of research on sector-based strategy and industry engagement. Throughout her career, Ms. Hughes has held various positions in higher education administration including project manager with the Center for International Programs at Empire State College and as technical assistant to the Dean of Business, Engineering and Industrial Technologies at Hudson Valley Community College.
