a full service litigation firm when results matter Greetings From Atlantic City The date was Friday July 26th. I had spent an entire day in Atlantic County Superior Court representing the wrongfully accused and I was rushing back to my office to wrap things up so that I could meet my wife and The Honorable Mr. and Mrs. Damon Tyner at The Knife and Fork around 6pm. The plan was to eat at the bar and make it to Boardwalk Hall by 8, so that we would have more than enough time to get situated before Beyoncé was scheduled to take the stage at 9. As I was walking up North Carolina Avenue towards Atlantic, en route to the Leonard Law Group / Boardwalk Journal compound, I literally bumped into one of The New Kids on The Block. BEST LEGAL SERVICES Joey McIntyre a/k/a J-Mac to be exact. - SILVER - The 40 year-old New Kid was in town for a performance later that night at Taj Mahal featuring 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men and was out riding his bike and decided to stop for a quick bite to eat at Gino’s, where he ordered a slice of pizza and paged through the July edition of The Boardwalk Journal. After exchanging a quick hello, I found myself engulfed in a street side conversation for the next 30 minutes discussing a wide range of topics, among them: the longevity of NKOTB, the size of the seagulls on the Atlantic City Boardwalk, Boston mob boss Whitey Bulger, the origin of The Boardwalk Journal, the Mike Tyson one man Broadway show, Boardwalk Empire, Jersey Shore, groupies (from back in the day of course, we are now both happily married men with children), the second coming of Andrew “Dice” Clay, what a little shit head Justin Beiber is turning into (my opinion, not his), the evolution of Mark Wahlberg from rapper Marky Mark to Hollywood mogul, Frank Sinatra, The 500 Club and even Philip Leonetti’s book Mafia Prince, which I suggested he pass on to the aforementioned Mark Wahlberg. Needless to say we hit it off. My new friend was nice enough to invite myself and my wife to his concert and even invited us to come backstage and meet the JAMES J. LEONARD JR., ESQ. rest of the New Kid’s, who are all in the 40’s and are no longer “new” or “kids”. As we stood there exchanging information, not only had I lost track of time, I temporarily forgot all about my wife, the Tyners, The Knife and Fork and even Beyoncé. While we didn’t make it to the New Kid’s concert, and I was a few minutes late to The Knife and Fork, we did make it on time to see Beyoncé and she was amazing. Interestingly enough on our way home, my wife and I saw her back up dancers skateboarding through the parking lot of the Farley Plaza as one of their tour busses gassed up.

www.gmslaw.com Kudos to Atlantic County Executive Dennis Levinson for his candid remarks to The Press of Atlantic City regarding his desire to see The John Brooks Recovery Center and Sister Jean’s Kitchen, both of which are on Pacific Avenue and in the heart of what we have been led to believe is something called The Tourism District, moved elsewhere. Levinson told The Press that having both of the aforementioned facilities “in the middle of the Tourism District is not conducive to bringing visitors into Atlantic City” and we couldn’t agree more. Who could forget Levinson duking it out last year with the now former head of the Atlantic City Recuse Mission, arguing that the Mission should have been working on curbing the number of homeless individuals drawn to Atlantic City, as opposed to efforts seeking to increase that population. Once again, we are in agreement with the County Executive on this point. So after taking on Sister Jean’s Kitchen, The John Brooks Recovery Center and The Atlantic City Rescue Mission, many have speculated on what Levinson’s next unpopular cause du jour would be. Would he try to boot The Marine Mammal Stranding Center out of Brigantine? Would he tell Sister Grace Nolan’s Catholic Charities to hightail it out of Ducktown? Our sources tell us that the County Executive has no plans to do either and his focus remains ACCIDENTS HAPPEN. steadfast on improving this “Tourism District”, whatever that is …

The Palm Restaurant in Atlantic City recently Photo: Tom Briglia/PhotoGraphics hosted a Wall of Fame unveiling for 95.1 WAYV Morning Show Hosts Mike and Diane. The event attracted a huge crowd of family, friends and longtime listeners, who came out to help the popular radio hosts celebrate the prestigious honor.

“Mike and Diane mean so much to me, the restaurant and our community,” said Palm Atlantic City General Manger Paul Sandler. “I am thrilled to be able to see their faces on my wall each and every day, and to be reminded of what exceptional people they are.”

Since its launch 15 years ago, the “Mike & Diane Morning Show” has been a favorite of listeners in Atlantic, Cape May, Ocean and Mike & Diane with Paulie Sandler, General Manager of The Palm Atlantic City Cumberland counties, in great part due to the hosts’ relationships with local residents.

“The caricatures featured on the walls of The Palm are known for their ties to Atlantic City and the greater South Jersey region,” said Diane Mitchell. “Mike and I are thrilled to be recognized as part of the greater Atlantic City area in such a visual and permanent way. We’re happy to celebrate and share this honor with our listeners, and to throw this party as our Members of the 95.1 WAYV team from left to right: Shannon Wray, Tracey Rizen, Mike way of thanking them for being such loyal fans Richman, Diane Mitchell, Casey Bailey, Carol Chipolone, Donna Essick, Gary Fisher over the last 15 years.” and Kim Shipman at the Mike & Diane Wall of Fame caricature unveiling recently held at The Palm Restaurant in Atlantic City.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Except of course, for the coveted Miss America Pageant. This fall, after an eight-year absence, Atlantic City welcomes back “the” event of the season, the equivalent of Atlantic City’s own World Series or Super Bowl as described by one city promoter. Here she comes…Miss America…and this year in particular, it’s going to be historic.

34 | The Boardwalk Journal | August 2013 2013 Miss America The Boardwalk Journal | August 2013 | 35 She was a tiny thing, standing a little over five feet tall and weighing just 108 pounds. With waves of light brown curly hair, Margaret Gorman resembled screen star Mary Pickford. Maybe that’s why she beat 1,000 other girls who also submitted their photos to the Washington Herald to win an entry in that first pageant.

But whatever the reason, Margaret found herself at age 16 competing in the 1921 Inter-City Beauty Contest in Atlantic City. It was part of the Atlantic City Fall Pageant, conceived by the business community as a way to extend the summer season. With a bather’s revue, a rolling chair parade, night spectacle and beauty contest, it was quite the weekend. The eight contestants were treated to dinner and a vaudeville show. A hostess committee accompanied them to beachfront hotels.

The judging panel found young Margaret endearing. So did the public, whose votes accounted for 50 percent of each girl’s score. Margaret won “The Most Beautiful Bathing Girl in America” which came with a Golden Mermaid trophy. It would be the start of something bigger than the city’s business community could ever imagine.

A Tradition Is Born

The next year, there were 58 contestants including 10 from State. The parade featured 21 brass bands, two orchestras, 250 floats and rolling chairs swathed in fresh flowers. Cannons boomed. Airplanes showered the contestants with confetti.

The early Miss America candidates didn’t have to worry about talent, community service or a platform. But that would change. Talent was added to the competition in 1935. Bess Myerson, the first college graduate to serve as Miss America, received the first scholarship grant, in the amount of $5,000. By the 1950s, Miss America was a formidable scholarship resource with a Scholarship Fund of over $250,000. (Today Miss America is the world’s largest provider of scholarships for young women in the world.)

The things we associate with Miss America came to pass over the years. In 1954, the pageant was nationally televised for the first time, a live event broadcast in black-and-white on ABC. At the time, it broke viewership records with an audience of 27 million viewers. The following year, Bert Parks began his 25-year tenure as Master of Ceremonies, introducing the pageant’s theme song, “There She Is, Miss America.” Contestant “platforms” were introduced in 1989.

Leaving Atlantic City

The one constant throughout was Atlantic City. And the city was more than a backdrop for the pageant. The organizers, the sponsors, the staff all lived in the region. So did the volunteers who served as pageant hostesses, a role that often was passed down in families.

Then there was the “Show Us Your Shoes” parade on the Boardwalk each year, attended by generations of families. And there was the Press photo the morning after crowning—you know the one—of Miss America frolicking in the waves.

36 | The Boardwalk Journal | August 2013 People here rallied behind the pageant as much as any sports team, noted Jeff Guaracino, Chief Strategy and Communications Officer for the Atlantic City Alliance (ACA). He called it “Atlantic City’s own World Series or Super Bowl”—the pageant was that important to fans. That was why there was a collective sigh, and a gaping hole, when Miss America left for Las Vegas in 2005, citing financial reasons.

For the next few years, the pageant would drift, trying to find a foothold on Country Music Television or TLC. That’s about the timeframe that Sam Haskell was recruited.

“I had just stepped down from a very powerful job in entertainment,” said the former Executive Vice President and Worldwide Head of Television for the William Morris Talent Agency. “That’s when I was approached by two friends, Phyllis George (Miss America 1971) and Donna Axum (Miss America 1964). They said they needed my help on the board of the Miss America Organization. I agreed to do it for one year. And within that year, I was elected Chairman. I couldn’t turn down an organization that makes available more than $45 million in scholarships each year. So here I am.”

Under Haskell’s leadership, the Miss America Pageant was reinvigorated. “I had to take an organization that was considered too old, where the average age viewer was 58, and make it relevant for network TV,” he said. “I took a lot of hits for creating the reality show for TLC, but it helped to drop our median age viewer to 37. And that got the attention of ABC.”

Haskell also wanted the pageant in Atlantic City. “Las Vegas was very good to us,” he said, “but Las Vegas has many major events each year. In Atlantic City, Miss America is THE event.” So he started investigating possibilities.

Jeff Vasser, President of the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority (ACCVA) received a call last spring from Art McMaster, then CEO and President of the Miss America Organization. “He invited me to lunch and asked if the community would support the return of the pageant,” remembered Jeff. “Around the same time, the Lieutenant Governor was calling Art’s office. The important point is that everyone was trying to do the same thing. The timing was right to bring Miss America back to Atlantic City.”

A Triumphant Return

Governor Chris Christie made the official announcement along with the Miss America Organization, the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA), the ACCVA and the ACA. A three-year contract was signed.

The move made headlines around the country. Jeff Guaracino of the ACA, the agency, reflected on the power of the announcement. “No matter how successful we would have been in repositioning Atlantic City as a travel destination,” he said, “people would have said ‘you did a great job but…’ if Miss America hadn’t been part of the mix. The pageant’s return is a symbol of a city on the rise. This is an historic moment for Atlantic City; the picture taken on the day the contestants arrive will be like the picture when Marilyn Monroe was Grand Marshall of the Parade. This year, the year of the grand return, will be celebrated like no other.”

The Boardwalk Journal | August 2013 | 37 The region could see as much as $32 million dollars in economic impact from Miss America, according to a draft study by NW Financial Group for the CRDA. “You’ve got the delegations, the fans, the visitors, the future contestants all becoming part of it, for as much as two weeks,” said Vasser. “That in itself creates a lot of economic impact. The value of the publicity that Atlantic City will get in that first year also will be substantial.” Vasser’s organization is hosting media and prospective convention organizers as part of the pageant.

Guaracino agreed. “There will be many opportunities on ABC, include morning news and prime time exposure, not to mention the tune-in messages,” he said. “This gives us a great opportunity to showcase Atlantic City to people who may not have visited in a long time, and may not have an idea of what we have to offer. In addition, each contestant, via social media, can be a great ambassador for the city. “

Volunteers and Community Support

Perhaps no one knows the Miss America Organization from as many perspectives as Mary Blackburn. As Chairman of the Miss America Pageant Hostess Committee, she coordinates and manages the hostesses. But her history with Miss America goes well beyond that.

“I competed in the pageant from the age of 19,” she said. “It really helped to fund my college education.”

Blackburn was Miss New Jersey 1979. But as a former Linwood resident, she also marched in the Miss America Parade as part of the Mainland Regional High School Band. She also covered the pageant for six years as a TV 40 anchor and reporter. Blackburn went to work for the Miss America Organization as Director of Corporate Community Relations, and oversaw the launch of the Miss America “platform.”

She left the organization when she married and moved to Seattle. But she reconnected when Miss America moved to Las Vegas. Then, when Blackburn and her husband moved back to New Jersey, coincidentally, the pageant did, too, making it easy to volunteer.

“My job is to lead a team of incredible women,” she explained. “We ask our volunteers to put their lives on hold for two weeks. Most of them have grown kids; but they leave their husbands, their pets. It’s a 24/7 commitment. And these women have a passion for the program. They’ve raised daughters. They know what to do to help the contestants, whether it’s getting them to their next activity or giving them a hug. This is a once-in-a- lifetime experience. We want it to be seamless—and memorable.”

Blackburn is not the only former contestant who is excited about the pageant. Margot Schoeffel, a former Miss New Jersey contestant, plans to be at the pageant with her daughter Kaitlyn, Miss Avalon 2014 and formerly Miss New Jersey’s Outstanding Teen. Margot Schoeffel is owner and teacher at Ensemble Arts Dance Studio in Egg Harbor Twp., home to orientations for many of the local pageants.

“I love to support Miss America,” said Schoeffel, “because I really think it gives the girls something to think about. What can I get involved in, to make a difference in the world? We become more aware of each other and everyone benefits.”

Aggie Becker, company director for Ensemble Arts, arranged for any student age 10 and older to dance in the Boardwalk Parade. “So many of our girls compete in pageants and they were so excited to be a part of it,” she said. Becker confessed to getting excited herself. “I’d have a pajama party with my best friend and watch it

38 | The Boardwalk Journal | August 2013 on TV,” she said. “I always wanted to see it but going to Las Vegas was out of the question. Now it’s right here in town.”

What’s in Store for Miss America

The contestants will arrive September 3rd. From then, they can expect a flurry of activity.

“We are going to make this the biggest and best event ever,” said Haskell of the Miss America Organization. “Everything is supersized. We are very excited for the ‘Show Me Your Shoes Parade,’ which we really couldn’t do in Las Vegas. This year, we have over 130 different units, including local high school choirs, dancers, bands, and more. It’s going to run for about 3 miles, and for the first time, it will be televised” (on WPVI, an ABC affiliate). The pageant will air live on ABC nationally, right after a special edition of 20/20, ‘Pageant Confidential: The Road to Miss America.’

There will be three nights of preliminary competitions for Miss America held on September 10, 11, and 12th. The Miss America Parade is scheduled for Saturday, September 14, at 5 p.m. The pageant will be held on Sunday, September 15, at Boardwalk Hall. The nation will be watching, and you can be sure ‘the locals’ will as well.

Miss America 2014 who will travel over 300,000 miles this coming year. “She really has no home,” said Sam Haskell. “She will be on a plane or in a hotel maybe 330 days of the year. But each winner brings something new to the program. In addition to being the Official Ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network, she will work with her own platform. When you step into the Miss America ‘dream machine,’ there’s no telling what amazing things will happen.”

And she’ll start right here in Atlantic City with the crowning, something that Mary Blackburn knows is a positive. “In my role as Director of Corporate Community Relations, I talked to people all over the country,” said Blackburn. “And I was surprised at how many people didn’t know where Miss America was held. They’d think maybe Atlanta. But I guarantee you, with the national attention that this pageant is going to get, it will be well- known. Atlantic City is the home of Miss America.

“When Miss America was here eight years ago, we were the sole marketing agency,” said Jeff Vasser of the ACCVA. “Now with ACA, CRDA and the Governor’s office, it creates that many more stakeholders invested in the pageant. The spotlight is greater than ever before on Miss America, and that will help make sure she never leaves again.”

When Toni Braxton steps on stage August 24th at Taj Mahal, the R&B legend brings with her a career that has spanned almost 25 years and has produced 6 Grammy Awards, 7 American Music Awards, 9 Billboard Music Awards and has seen more than 66 million records sold worldwide.

Offstage, the 45 year old Braxton has dealt with a myriad of health, marital and financial woes, that have unfortunately made these aspects of her personal life fodder for tabloid magazines and internet gossip sites.

When The Boardwalk Journal caught up with the self-described “Diva”, it was all business as she looked back on her debut album and looked forward to her upcoming Atlantic City appearance.

BWJ: When your debut solo album Toni Braxton was released back in 1993, Whitney Houston released The Bodyguard Soundtrack and both Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson also had chart-topping number one albums. What was it like to release your debut album and find yourself on the top of the charts surrounded by all of these power-houses?

TB: It was wonderful dream come true. I always loved Whitney and wanted to be like her in the sense of her success and to be compared to her was surreal. Looking back, I didn’t enjoy it like I was supposed to enjoy it, but I think when you are young in this business and you look back, I think that everyone has that same exact story. Now it is my 20 year anniversary and I am very excited about it, almost reliving it for the first time, but it also it shows my age. I have been in this business for almost 25 years and Janet and Mariah and all of them had a very big impact on my career, they were the girls that we all wanted to be like and we are all about the same age. I still look up to them now.

BWJ: What can we expect to see from you at your live show at the Taj on August 24th?

TB: You know, I am going to have fun this time. This time I’m really gonna do it and not tip toe around it. I am a little cautious because when you have Lupus you have to live with caution, but I am not going to think about that and I am going to be like an 18 year old and have fun. Maybe you’d prefer Carmines, Cuba Libre, PF Chang’s or a steak from The Palm.

Looking for something less casual, maybe wings from Hooters, a burger from Broadway Burger Bar or something from Casa Taco & Tequila Bar or the recently opened Chickie’s & Pete’s or Tony Luke’s.

Not one, but two Starbucks locations and the one of a kind Zeytinia Gourmet Food and Marketplace.

Did we mention the city’s only movie theatre, an IMAX at that, or the legendary Comedy Stop?

Is it nightlife you are after? Try Boogie Nights, Ri Ra or Anthem.

Maybe a massage or a facial at Blue Mercury Spa or perusing the many shops at The Quarter.

Traumatic spinal cord and brain injuries often increase in the summer, due to accidents on the beach or in the water. While you are cooling off in the pool, the lake or the ocean this summer, AtlantiCare reminds you to be alert for shallow water, rip currents, rough surf and other hazards. At AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center (ARMC), doctors historically have treated a wide range of beach and water-related injuries in the summer, from concussions and minor head or neck trauma, to chest and abdominal injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and, sadly, sometimes fatal injuries. “We want the local residents of our community and our visitors to enjoy the beaches, the ocean, water sports, and all the fun that the Jersey Shore has to offer, but we want them to do so safely. It’s important that beachgoers listen to the lifeguards’ warnings,” says Ciro Randazzo, MD, MPH, AtlantiCare Neurosciences Institute. “In addition to the beach and water-related spinal cord injuries, the Trauma Center has cared for patients suffering from concussions to traumatic brain injuries,” adds Kelly Willman, MD, a trauma surgeon at ARMC. “Body surfing is the most common activity that can result in traumatic injury. Powerful waves can thrust your head to the ground, causing neck injuries, paralysis or even death. Boogie boarding, boating and personal watercraft accidents also can cause serious bodily harm.”

AtlantiCare offers the following safety tips for preventing spinal cord and other traumatic injuries: ALWAYS: • Heed lifeguards’ warnings. • Swim in only lifeguard-protected waters. • Check wave conditions before hitting the water. • Avoid big or rough waves and waves breaking into shallow water close to shore. • Keep your arms over your head to protect it from hitting the ocean floor. • Ride the surf at an angle to the waves, rather than in a straight line toward the shore. • Body surf with a partner. • Know your beach and surf – be aware of rocks, jetties and sandbanks. • Keep your eye on children. • Practice courtesy and safety – stay clear of other bathers and be watchful of others.

NEVER: • Swim or surf at night. • Run and dive into the surf. • Dive into a shallow pool. • Combine alcohol with body surfing or other water or summer activities.
