During the 2019-2020 Season, the professional orchestra, youth orchestras and all ensembles performed approximately 60 concerts for over 50,000 people, including an estimated 20,000 children.

Redfield Foundation The Reno Phil Orchestra performed the world famous production of Beethoven Lives Upstairs, featuring a lively exchange of letters between young Christoph and his uncle about the “madman” who has moved upstairs. Through a touching correspondence dramatically underscored with the composer’s most beautiful excerpts, Christoph comes to understand the genius of Beethoven, the beauty of his Family Concert 2019 music, and the torment of his deafness.

OTHER PROJECTS & EVENTS THE WORK OF ART: RENO PHIL The PBS Reno documentary, “The Work of Art: Reno Phil” originally aired on October 14, 2019. This project was a collaboration between PBS Reno and the Reno Phil, documenting the commission and creation of the new classical piece entitled Transcend in honor of the Reno Phil’s 50th anniversary and the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad. The documentary has since won a silver Telly award in the Television: General Documentary category and a gold Communicator Award of Excellence in the Film / Video-Documentary category. Classical Tunes and Tequila Event In February, the Reno Phil partnered with Yelp to host “Classical Tunes & Tequila” prior to our Landscapes & Legends of Mexico concert. The evening featured tequila tasting with Cantera Negra and Liquid Gold at Quality Event Designs across the street from the Pioneer Center. The tequila was representative of the musical program for the evening and our program note annotator, Chris Morrison, gave an overview of the upcoming performance after a wonderful mariachi band of RPYO Alumni serendaded the attendees.

12 POMP DESPITE THE CIRCUMSTANCE Senior year for students is a time-honored tradition full of lasting memories and preparation for the next chapter in life. For the Class of 2020, the year didn’t exactly go as planned and graduation wasn’t quite what they were expecting, with many ceremonies and celebrations cancelled or postponed. That didn’t stop the senior members of the Reno Phil’s Youth Symphony Orchestra however, as they brought the ceremony to thousands online. They performed Elgar’s Pomp & Circumstance as a gift to the graduating class of 2020 and to honor their fellow graduates here in Reno, and across the globe. The digital collaboration was the last time this group performed together. This is the famous tune used in graduation ceremonies around the world.

POP-UP CONCERTS At the end of June, the Reno Phil began a 7-week series of #spreadjoy pop-up concerts featuring live performances by soloists or small ensembles from the Reno Phil. In order to prevent any gatherings and keep our musicians safe, the locations were kept a surprise and the community was delighted to experience the joy of live music throughout the region including Reno, Sparks and Lake Tahoe.

LAS VEGAS TOUR VOLUNTEERS Reno Phil staff members and Maestro Laura Jackson hosted a regional tour March 7-8, 2020 to see the Las Vegas Philharmonic perform The Four Seasons and to check out The Smith Center. The group received a guided tour of Seven Magic Mountains from the Nevada Museum of Art.

CHORUS The Reno Phil Chorus experienced another excellent year! The year began with 68 voices singing for the Fourth of July concert with Maestro Laura Jackson in Wingfield Park in downtown Reno. Nearly 100 chorus members also performed at the annual holiday concert Spirit of the Season in December 2019. The Reno Phil chorus was scheduled to perform at the season finale concert Ode to Joy: Beethoven’s Final Bow on April 25 & 26, 2020, but that concert has been postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Reno Phil Chorus is an all-volunteer group with 136 members on roster. Members of the chorus practice over 200 hours for multiple concerts throughout the season.

AUXILIARY ORGANIZATIONS/VOLUNTEERS The Reno Philharmonic Endowment Trust manages an RPA endowment, which now exceeds $3.5 million. The Reno Phil has a Youth Orchestra Committee made up of parent volunteers, WCSD teachers, and Reno Phil Board members which supports the Youth Orchestras. During the 2019 – 2020 season, 50+ dedicated and talented volunteers contributed more than 3,000 hours of assistance to the Reno Phil at concerts and in the office. Many more volunteers contributed time on ad hoc and special event committees, as well as Board committees.
