Dear Friends, Astonishingly, it is already March and the grand finale to our 51st season of classical concerts, Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” is approaching. Do not despair, however. Not only is the 52nd season on its way, the Reno Phil has a terrific slate of pops for summer 2020 in the works: • If you enjoyed the visuals on the “Landscapes & Legends of Mexico” concert, then bring the whole family back to the Pioneer for “Disney in Concert” on Sunday, June 7th. Scenes from Disney classics will be up on the screen, accompanied by the Reno Phil and four Broadway vocalists. • On July 4th, the orchestra and chorus will take to the stage at Wingfield Park with Laura Jackson directing a free program celebrating our nation’s birth. • Pops On the River, the biggest little party in Reno, will be on July 11th and will feature the orchestra with soloists Tony DeSare and Capathia Jenkins. The theme of the night is The Golden Era of Reno which will be set to the music of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. • Do you prefer a quieter setting and the beauty of Lake Tahoe? The orchestra, Tony, and Capathia will repeat the performance at Sand Harbor on July 13th. Regular tickets are sold by Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and went on sale last Tuesday. This show traditionally sells out so you will want to call or go on-line ASAP. Sponsorship packages are available through the Reno Phil office and include premium seats and a pre-concert dinner. • Our final pops for the summer celebrates James Bond.007: The Music of James Bond, conducted by Jason Altieri, will be performed both at the Pioneer Center on Sunday, August 9th and back at Sand Harbor on August 10th. I hope that you are able to join us for some or all of these summer programs. If you enjoy our classical programming you will be astonished at the ability of our talented musicians and directors to switch gears and bring you the best of pops. Ruth always has a handy joke... some not to be repeated at family gatherings. She is a funny funny girl! “ – Catherine Matovich, Viola”

Ruth Lenz is one of the kindest people I know. She plays like a goddess (and has ever since she was a teenager), “but I have never seen her show arrogance or attitude to anyone. Reno is so lucky to have her! ” – Jim Winn

Ruth and I got to spend a few days together playing String Quartets with Brian and “Rebecca Shuldt of the Felici Trio in the beautiful Mammoth Lakes area. It was (and always is) memorable to play chamber music with Ruth but it was more awesome to have one on one time with Ruth and talk about life, food and the inevitable – music. Ruth dragged me outdoors and introduced me to the insanely beautiful Convict Lake. There are so many wonderful things to say about the amazing human being that is the Ruth Lenz! She is one of the most down-to-earth, compassionate, and kind people I know. And her violin playing is pretty good, too! ” – Dustin Budish, Principal Viola Dustin Budish and Ruth Lenz Ruth Lenz is a big-league talent. One of the great joys of my life is “when top international musicians discover and discuss what a fantastic player she is. One example: I think it was the second Nevada Chamber Music Festival. Longtime principal violist of the legendary Cleveland Orchestra, Robert Vernon, came out of his first rehearsal of a quartet in which Ruth was a member and said, “Who is Ruth Lenz and what in the world is she doing here!?” She could be playing anywhere in the world. I hope that our community fully realizes how fortunate we are that she chooses to live and perform here. – Scott” Faulkner, Principal Bass Scott Faulkner and Ruth Lenz

What do I love about Ruth? Well, because she is my niece, I’m bound by law to love her. :) Seriously though, she is “one of the most naturally gifted musicians I’ve ever known and her tone always hits the right spot with me. – Peter Lenz, Principal Cello”

Jessica Escobar, Ruth Lenz and Josef Špaček Ruth Lenz in the Nutcracker Pit, 2019 Ruthie is quite possibly the kindest, gentlest, most nurturing soul I have ever known in my life. Soft-spoken and “unassuming with an impish sense of humor, I think her humility and groundedness are the emotional foundation behind how beautifully, organically, and expressively she plays the violin, as well as how tenderly and lovingly she raises her children and treats all creatures. She doesn’t see things like rank, social standing, or anything other than the person you are. She loves animals, plants, and people, and knows so much about the natural world and our part of it. I cherish all the time we have spent and will continue to spend together, be it on long walks through the neighborhoods along the river, at summertime food trucks, at each other’s homes with friends and family, or just kidding around backstage as she ALWAYS walks in right in the middle of me saying something that sounds completely outrageous out of context and then she dies laughing in that easy and spontaneous way of hers. It’s a running joke of ours that we are going to compile them all into a compendium of randomness and ridiculousness... if only we could ever remember to write them down! Happy 10-year concertmaster anniversary to my beautiful friend who sparkles and shines just as much off the stage as she does on it. Reno is so lucky to have you, Ruthie! ” – Jessica Escobar, Violin TIRED OF READING IN THE DARK?

Liszt was one of the nineteenth century’s most famous musicians, renowned for his extravagant stage presence, his formidable piano technique (he is regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time), the riotous enthusiasm of his audiences, his colorful and sometimes progressive compositions, his generosity, and his occasional romantic dalliances. He started playing piano at age five, and played his first public concert at nine. Later, in Vienna, he received instruction from Carl Czerny (student of Beethoven) and Antonio Salieri. By the 1830s, Liszt was known all over Europe as a piano virtuoso. In 1848 he settled in Weimar, where he conducted the court orchestra and composed prolifically. In the 1850s, Liszt turned increasingly to religious music, and even took the minor orders of the Catholic Church in 1865. Liszt wrote hundreds of pieces for solo piano as well as twelve symphonic poems, two piano concertos, and many choral works. PROGRAM NOTES CONTINUED
