As a dynamic and developing country economically, cultural and education, Malaysia borrows a lot of languages such as Portuguese, Netherland, Chinese, English and Arabic. Arabic itself a Quranic language is used in Muslim’s everyday (especially) spiritual life. This research analyzes the classification of Arabic borrowed words (after this “loanword”) in Malay language based on theory of typology. The objectives of the study were to identify the Arabic loanwords (after this “the words”) in Malay language (after this “recipient language”) in premier Malay language dictionary, “Kamus Dewan” by the abbreviation “Ar” (Arab) as etymology of the words, to get the percentage of words which commonly used in current Malay speaking and writing. Also it attempted to calculate the percentage of both types of words which were fully absorbed in Malay language as model language (Arabic) and which words have undergone some changes by identifying the phonemic elements in the words. The analysis to the words will be done based on Jawi writing (“Jawi” is a term of Arab alphabet with some phoneme additions in Malay language) which has been applied in Malay language since Islamization in Malay Archipelago in early 14 th century when Arabs came to trade and spread Islam religion. -
What Is Indonesian Islam?

Michael Laffan, History Department, Princeton University* Abstract This paper is a preliminary essay thinking about the concept of an Indonesian Islam. After considering the impact of the ideas of Geertz and Benda in shaping the current contours of what is assumed to fit within this category, and how their notions were built on the principle that the region was far more multivocal in the past than the present, it turns to consider whether, prior to the existance of Indonesia, there was ever such a notion as Jawi Islam and questions what modern Indonesians make of their own Islamic history and its impact on the making of their religious subjectivities. What about Indonesian Islam? Before I begin I would like to present you with three recent statements reflecting either directly or indirectly on assumptions about Indonesian Islam. The first is the response of an Australian academic to the situation in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami, the second and third have been made of late by Indonesian scholars The traditionalist Muslims of Aceh, with their mystical, Sufistic approach to life and faith, are a world away from the fundamentalist Islamists of Saudi Arabia and some other Arab states. The Acehnese have never been particularly open to the bigoted "reformism" of radical Islamist groups linked to Saudi Arabia. … Perhaps it is for this reason that aid for Aceh has been so slow coming from wealthy Arab nations such as Saudi Arabia.1 * This, admittedly in-house, piece presented at the UCLA Colloquium on Islam and Southeast Asia: Local, National and Transnational Studies on May 15, 2006, is very much a tentative first stab in the direction I am taking in my current project on the Making of Indonesian Islam. -

Leiden & Boston: Brill, 2014, xvi + 318 pp. isbn 9789004278691. Price: eur 115.00 (hardback). Sayyid ʿUthman ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAqil ibn Yayah al-ʿAlawi, often referred to as Sayyid ʿUthman, was one of the most influential Islamic scholars in the Nether- lands East Indies. His Hadhrami-Arab descent, including his genealogy that goes back to the Prophet Muhammad, his mobility between Southeast Asia and the Arabian Peninsula, his engagement in intellectual exchange across con- tinents with representatives of different Islamic schools of thought, and his close relations to the colonial authorities certainly qualify him as a figure who deserves a detailed study. Thanks to the efforts of Nico Kaptein this lacuna in the study of Islam in the Netherlands East Indies has now been filled with a biography of Sayyid ʿUthman that not only locates this Islamic scholar in colo- nial history but also offers what Kaptein calls ‘a view from within’. The first part of the book is dedicated to this insider perspective. It consists of biographical texts, that is, life stories published by close family members shortly after Sayyid ʿUthman passed away in 1914. These texts were originally written in Malay using Jawi, an adopted Arabic alphabet. One of the great merits of Kaptein’s book is that he makes these important sources accessible to a larger audience by translating them into English and by a transliteration into Roman alphabet for readers of Malay (in the appendix). -

This article Accepted Dec 11, 2018 proposes a new algorithm for Jawi character recognition based on Hu’s moment as an invariant feature that we call the tree root (TR) algorithm. The TR algorithm allows every Jawi character to have a unique combination of Keywords: moment. Seven values of the Hu’s moment are calculated from all Jawi characters, which consist of 36 isolated, 27 initial, 27 middle, and 35 end Feature extraction characters; this makes a total of 125 characters. To assess the TR algorithm, five Moment invariant characters that had been rotated to 90o and 180o and scaled with factors of Optical character recognition 0.5 and 2 were used. Overall, the recognition rate of the TR algorithm was Pattern classifier 90.4%; 113 out of 125 characters have a unique combination of moment Tree root (TR) algorithm values, while testing on rotated and scaled characters achieved 82.14% recognition rate. -

Islam became a legacy to the Malays so that they are included in the definition of the Malays as contained in Article 160 (2) of the Constitution, namely the Muslim, practicing traditional Malay culture and speak the language. However Jawi script which brought together the arrival of Islam had a different fate for his role has been taken over by Rumi. Even the position of Jawi today's increasingly marginalized and no longer seen as a symbol of Malay civilization as it was impassable in the golden age of Malay civilization ago. Hence this paper discusses some of the challenges faced by Jawi nowadays that need to be addressed to ensure the Jawi script may continue to be upheld its use in accordance with its position as a civilization heritage of the Malays. This is particularly evident in Asia. This diversity is to be found in the different ethnic backgrounds and in the different practices of Islam. The Muslim world of Asia has been experiencing an Islamic revival. This has had an effect on moderate as well as radical Muslims. An understanding of the dynamics of Islam in Asia should help inform United States’ policy to develop respect between America and Muslim peoples, to foster economic policies to encourage development of open societies, to support education in Muslim states, and to identify and prioritize terrorist sanctuaries in order to pursue more effectively the war against terror. This report will be updated. By some estimates there are approximately 1.2 billion Muslims in the world, of which 60% live in Asia.1 Only 15% of Muslims are Arab, while almost one third live in South Asia.2 The four nations with the largest Muslim populations, Indonesia (194 million), India (150 million), Pakistan (145 million), and Bangladesh (130 million), are in Asia. China also has a population of 39 million Muslims.3 Despite this, the Muslims of Asia are perceived to be on the periphery of the Islamic core based in the Arab Middle East. Muslims are a majority in Kirgizstan, Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan and Turkmenistan in Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh in South Asia and Malaysia, Brunei, and Indonesia in Southeast Asia. -

WORKING PAPER Joseph Chinyong Liow, The Brookings Institution SUMMARY: Although the Arab Spring prompted greater discussion of Islamism in Southeast Asia, links between Southeast Asian Islamists and their counterparts in the Middle East have remained nebulous. While Southeast Asian Islamists have largely eschewed revolutionary approaches to political change, some parties have remained explicit about their desire to not only Islamize society but to establish an “Islamic state.” About this Series: The Rethinking Political Islam series is an innovative effort to understand how the developments following the Arab uprisings have shaped—and in some cases altered—the strategies, agendas, and self-conceptions of Islamist movements throughout the Muslim world. The project engages scholars of political Islam through in-depth research and dialogue to provide a systematic, cross-country comparison of the trajectory of political Islam in 12 key countries: Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Syria, Jordan, Libya, Pakistan, as well as Malaysia and Indonesia. This is accomplished through three stages: A working paper for each country, produced by an author who has conducted on-the-ground research and engaged with the relevant Islamist actors. A reaction essay in which authors reflect on and respond to the other country cases. A final draft incorporating the insights gleaned from the months of dialogue and discussion.
