As a woodwind player myself, I took special care to write idiomatically for the clarinet and bassoon. The role of the piano is much more than that of accompanying—it’s been carefully integrated with the other instruments. The third movement reprises material from the first and second movements in its coda to bring a sense of cyclicality to the work. v BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Lindsay Birmingham, born in Salem, Oregon (1978), was a graduate student at Florida State University under Ladislav Kubik at the time of this thesis submission. Before pursuing her master’s degree, she studied with Scott Robbins and David Berry at the Petrie School of Music where she received her Bachelor of Music in Composition as well as a Bachelor of Arts in German from Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. During the summers of 2000 and 2001, she attended Brevard Music Center in North Carolina, where she studied with composers Claude Baker and Don Freund. Following graduation from Florida State University, she will relocate to Los Angeles, California as well as be a participant in the Edgar Stanton Audio Recording Institute at the Aspen Music Festival during the summer of 2003. 38.
