Scholar Voices, the Literary Magazine of Pathways to College SCHOLAR VOICES Spring 2016 INTRODUCTION Judith Berry Griffin, President, Pathways to College Welcome to the 2016 issue of Scholar Voices, the literary magazine of Pathways to College. For a second year, in addition to the written word, we have invited our Scholars to submit photographs. We continue to be so very pleased with their creativity. We know that expressing ideas is not always easy – even if the ideas are important and eagerly shared. But we continue to say that self-expression of all kinds is well worth the effort! Writers and artists through the centuries have shared their thoughts and passed their ideas and stories on to people they would never meet but to whom they have given invaluable gifts of knowledge, inspiration, insight and enjoyment. All of these gifts came to life in the same way – with an idea and the urge to keep it alive by sharing it with others. Scholar Voices is our way to share our Scholars’ stories and ideas with many others, both within and beyond the Pathways to College family. And to our Scholars: We hope that you will continue to tell your stories in writing and in art. In whatever form they take, they are more important than you will ever know. We are your cheerleaders! Keep sharing! “BRANCH OUT!” __________________ Branch Out Sherell P., Arts High School, Grade 10 Don't just listen Don't just hear Take into consideration The voices of those near Think deep, don't be shallow Be enthusiastic, not just mellow Don't just listen Don't just hear Opportunities at your door, will you be there? DEDICATION The poem “08/02” memorializes a tragedy -- the death of Daja Brookshire, sister of a Pathways Scholar from Gary, Indiana. Daja was the victim of a drive-by shooting on 08/02/15. We dedicate this issue of Scholar Voices to her memory. 08/02 Jalecia B., Grade 10 Wirt Emerson Visual andPerforming Arts Academy, Sitting in my bedroom We would just laugh Don’t got a clue You were here Just that quick someone up and shot you You were there Who? "What's ridiculous is the fact that you really don't care about anything I have to say," Sarah sassed at him. "Well maybe if you think I don't care maybe we should call the wedding off!" he yelled back. Sarah's eyes were filled with tears. The one she loved was trying to kick her out and call off the engagement. "I'm leaving," Sarah said. She grabbed her purse and just left. No car keys, no phone, nothing but her empty purse. "WHERE ARE YOU GOING?" he asked, trying to stop her. "As far away from you as possible," she spat back at him and slammed the door shut. It had been 12 hours and nobody has heard a word. Charlie called Sarah's dad. "Hello?" "Mr. Anderson, I know you are probably going to hate me but Sarah and I got into a huge fight last night and she left.

The permanent residents, although appurtenant to the changing official element, nevertheless furnished the framework which the larger and more important social life used to build upon, and the result was a structure of society tolerably compact and pleasing and certainly interesting. It was emphatically official, but it did not include the lower class officials, who found their recreation for the most part at the street resorts, and its tone was dignified and wholesome.

  • Lillian Gish
Lillian Gish Lived: October 14, 1893 - February 27, 1993 Worked as: director, film actress, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Mark Garrett Cooper In 1920, Lillian Gish both delivered a landmark performance in D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East and directed her sister Dorothy in Remodelling Her Husband. This was her sole director credit in a career as a screen actor that began with An Unseen Enemy in 1912 and ended with The Whales of August in 1987. Personal correspondence examined by biographer Charles Affron shows that Gish lobbied Griffith for the opportunity to direct and approached the task with enthusiasm. In 1920, in Motion Picture Magazine, however, Gish offered the following assessment of her experience: “There are people born to rule and there are people born to be subservient. I am of the latter order. I just love to be subservient, to be told what to do” (102). One might imagine that she discovered a merely personal kink. In a Photoplay interview that same year, however, she extended her opinion to encompass all women and in doing so slighted Lois Weber, one of Hollywood’s most productive directors. “I am not strong enough” to direct, Gish told Photoplay, “I doubt if any woman is. I understand now why Lois Weber was always ill after a picture” (29). What should historical criticism do with such evidence? By far the most common approach has been to argue that Gish did not really mean what the press quotes her as saying. Alley Acker, for instance, urges us not to be fooled by Gish’s “Victorian modesty” and goes on to provide evidence of her authority on the set (62).

1 Jeroen Buts Master Engels The Thematical and Stylistic Evolution of Heavy Metal Lyrics and Imagery From the 70s to Present Day Master scriptie Faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte Promotor: Prof. Dr. Gert Buelens 2 Prologue You cannot make me feel guilty/ I don't give a shit about respect I won't join your moral masturbation/ I'm the prodigal son gone off the tracks You cannot make me feel sorry/ I don't give a damn about your pride I'm the cat-piss on your carpet/ The last crushing thought before you die Don't fit in your picture Don't fit in your world Don't match all the lies you feed your kids Feel no loyalty/ This deal was made without me Sure I never signed it/ Your contracts don't apply to me I'll fuck your dog/ Do you still wanna get along with me? I'd rape your daughter/ On payment of a small fee I'll fuck your dog/ Do you still wanna get along with me? I'd rape your daughter/ How much would you pay? (“Dead Serious and Highly Professional”, The Ocean) If someone were to tell you, dear reader, that heavy metal is just a louder, faster and more formulaic version of that popular musical genre which defined the late 70s, called hard rock, that someone would probably be wrong. The above lyric contains several elements which indicate just how incomplete such a statement would be. Most importantly, it divides those who read it almost instantly: a metal fan, even if his taste is for a different subgenre of metal, will recognize a specific quality in this text.
