A dear friend reminded me that we are an Easter people living in a Good Friday world. After six weeks of Lenten sacrifice, much of it isolated in our homes, we should celebrate Easter for six weeks! Why? Because nothing that is more important to our faith as Christians than the resurrection of Jesus. We offer these meditations and activities to help you to celebrate Easter as a couple. And in this difficult time, allow your hearts and your marriages to be filled with hope! HOW TO USE THIS SERIES Set yourself up for success! Pick a time of day you can be consistent with. Turn off your phones and other distractions. Light a candle. Sit close together and take turns reading the parts out loud. FORMAT We’ve set up each day into three parts: PRAY We have selected one scripture passage with a resurrection theme for you to read. It is followed by a meditation, a time for quiet reflection, discussion, a blessing, and a prayer for unity. -

Scholar Voices, the Literary Magazine of Pathways to College
SCHOLAR VOICES Spring 2016 INTRODUCTION Judith Berry Griffin, President, Pathways to College Welcome to the 2016 issue of Scholar Voices, the literary magazine of Pathways to College. For a second year, in addition to the written word, we have invited our Scholars to submit photographs. We continue to be so very pleased with their creativity. We know that expressing ideas is not always easy – even if the ideas are important and eagerly shared. But we continue to say that self-expression of all kinds is well worth the effort! Writers and artists through the centuries have shared their thoughts and passed their ideas and stories on to people they would never meet but to whom they have given invaluable gifts of knowledge, inspiration, insight and enjoyment. All of these gifts came to life in the same way – with an idea and the urge to keep it alive by sharing it with others. Scholar Voices is our way to share our Scholars’ stories and ideas with many others, both within and beyond the Pathways to College family. And to our Scholars: We hope that you will continue to tell your stories in writing and in art. In whatever form they take, they are more important than you will ever know. We are your cheerleaders! Keep sharing! “BRANCH OUT!” __________________ Branch Out Sherell P., Arts High School, Grade 10 Don't just listen Don't just hear Take into consideration The voices of those near Think deep, don't be shallow Be enthusiastic, not just mellow Don't just listen Don't just hear Opportunities at your door, will you be there? Our futures are bright Our futures are clear With a pathway to college, I'll see you there! Don't just listen Don't just hear Expand your networking, be aware! Lillian Gish
Lillian Gish Lived: October 14, 1893 - February 27, 1993 Worked as: director, film actress, screenwriter Worked In: United States by Mark Garrett Cooper In 1920, Lillian Gish both delivered a landmark performance in D.W. Griffith’s Way Down East and directed her sister Dorothy in Remodelling Her Husband. This was her sole director credit in a career as a screen actor that began with An Unseen Enemy in 1912 and ended with The Whales of August in 1987. Personal correspondence examined by biographer Charles Affron shows that Gish lobbied Griffith for the opportunity to direct and approached the task with enthusiasm. In 1920, in Motion Picture Magazine, however, Gish offered the following assessment of her experience: “There are people born to rule and there are people born to be subservient. I am of the latter order. I just love to be subservient, to be told what to do” (102). One might imagine that she discovered a merely personal kink. In a Photoplay interview that same year, however, she extended her opinion to encompass all women and in doing so slighted Lois Weber, one of Hollywood’s most productive directors. “I am not strong enough” to direct, Gish told Photoplay, “I doubt if any woman is. I understand now why Lois Weber was always ill after a picture” (29). What should historical criticism do with such evidence? By far the most common approach has been to argue that Gish did not really mean what the press quotes her as saying. Alley Acker, for instance, urges us not to be fooled by Gish’s “Victorian modesty” and goes on to provide evidence of her authority on the set (62). -
