Henley Smith http://www.loc.gov/resource/lhbcb.40262 Library of Congress 104116 07 LC PREFATORY NOTE During the first forty years of its existence the city of Washington had a society, more definite and real than it has come to have in later days. The permanent residents, although appurtenant to the changing official element, nevertheless furnished the framework which the larger and more important social life used to build upon, and the result was a structure of society tolerably compact and pleasing and certainly interesting. It was emphatically official, but it did not include the lower class officials, who found their recreation for the most part at the street resorts, and its tone was dignified and wholesome.

  • Sultanes Del Ritmo

  • Scholar Voices, the Literary Magazine of Pathways to College
SCHOLAR VOICES Spring 2016 INTRODUCTION Judith Berry Griffin, President, Pathways to College Welcome to the 2016 issue of Scholar Voices, the literary magazine of Pathways to College. For a second year, in addition to the written word, we have invited our Scholars to submit photographs. We continue to be so very pleased with their creativity. We know that expressing ideas is not always easy – even if the ideas are important and eagerly shared. But we continue to say that self-expression of all kinds is well worth the effort! Writers and artists through the centuries have shared their thoughts and passed their ideas and stories on to people they would never meet but to whom they have given invaluable gifts of knowledge, inspiration, insight and enjoyment. All of these gifts came to life in the same way – with an idea and the urge to keep it alive by sharing it with others. Scholar Voices is our way to share our Scholars’ stories and ideas with many others, both within and beyond the Pathways to College family. And to our Scholars: We hope that you will continue to tell your stories in writing and in art. In whatever form they take, they are more important than you will ever know. We are your cheerleaders! Keep sharing! “BRANCH OUT!” __________________ Branch Out Sherell P., Arts High School, Grade 10 Don't just listen Don't just hear Take into consideration The voices of those near Think deep, don't be shallow Be enthusiastic, not just mellow Don't just listen Don't just hear Opportunities at your door, will you be there? Our futures are bright Our futures are clear With a pathway to college, I'll see you there! Don't just listen Don't just hear Expand your networking, be aware! DEDICATION The poem “08/02” memorializes a tragedy -- the death of Daja Brookshire, sister of a Pathways Scholar from Gary, Indiana.

The Straits Go Italian! The Legendary Dire Straits. Interviews & Tour Warm-Up Review Pubblicato su gothicNetwork.org (http://www.gothicnetwork.org) The Straits Go Italian! The Legendary Dire Straits. Interviews & Tour Warm-Up Review Articolo di: Saloni Kaul [1] I wasn’t exactly sure what I was letting myself in for when I decided to go to Nice Living, a restaurant cum live music establishment, reasonably upscale and featuring fine dining, ensconced in the Foro Italico complex, for what promised to be a Tour Warm-Up on August 4th. 2011 by The Legendary Dire Straits. The Dire Straits were celebrated, indeed, in their own right and immensely popular in the eighties but definitely disbanded ! And bandleader Mark Knopfler [2] I checked was elsewhere believably preparing for a tour with Bob Dylan! So who were these? To my surprise when I arrived, I learnt that the leader of this band was Italian. I was taken aback, but was reassured immediately by him that many original members of the English band were playing this night. And Jack Sonni, the only one from the US, was there too. “I shall bring him and the others to you and we’ll have a chat...but after the concert.” A number of former band musicians, performers and collaborators on innumerable albums of the band officially disbanded in 1995, when the charismatic vocalist-guitarist-bandleader Mark Knopfler took a decision in favour of a solo career, it seemed had decided to get together for a warm up concert, a prelude to fullfledged ones in Rome’s vicinity, to revive those long unplayed live but far from forgotten staples of the Straits repertoire.
