Parallel English/Hebrew texts will be used. We hope you’ll stay for services, but even if you can’t, stop by for a weekly dose of Torah! Saturdays, Parashat HaShavuah, from 9:00 AM to 9:45 AM

4 CONGREGATIONAL LEARNING

TBA Book Group with Rabbi Kulwin 2018 – 2019 Book Group members know that modern Jewish fiction falls mainly into three categories: books about Israel, books about the Holocaust and books about Jewish life in the Diaspora. In our twentieth year, we read works from each. Some are classics, some are new, and some approach their subject in unusual ways.

Thursday, November 1, 7:30 PM Sadness Is A White Bird by Moriel Rothman-Zecher In Rothman-Zecher’s debut novel, 17-year-old Israeli American, Jonathan, returns to Israel, eager to join the army. Waiting for his induction, he becomes friendly with Israeli Arabs, Nimreen and Laith, twin children of his mother’s best friend. As their friendship deepens, his feeling toward Israel is no less strong, but it is not as simple as it once was. Thursday, December 6, 7:30 PM Let It Be Morning by Sayed Kashuah A young journalist, recently married and a new father, seeks a quieter life away from the city and buys a large house in his parents' hometown, an Arab village in Israel. Reviewers have written that Kashuah, an Israeli Arab who writes in Hebrew, is comparable to Orwell and Kafka in his ability to convey otherworldly futility.

History Through Text with Rabbi Kulwin Each class is a stand-alone unit so that an inability to attend all (or even most) of the sessions will not be an impediment to an enjoyable and simulating learning experience.

Jews, Art and Jewish Art : The Ten Commandments insist that we are not to make graven images. Nevertheless, graphic arts—to say nothing of music, literature and other artistic forms—have long been associated with Jews and Jewish life. The Torah itself contains prose and poetry of unparalleled beauty; a Renaissance rabbi “proved” that all orchestra instruments were found in the Bible; and Marc Chagall is on anyone’s list of the greatest paint- ers of the 20th Century. We will examine Jewish writings about art, and works of art themselves, to try to understand Judaism’s historic relationship with art, and the prominence art enjoys in Jewish life today.  Art and the Torah—The Torah contains texts about art and many believe it is a work of art itself. We will look at both perspectives. Thursday, January 10, 7:30 PM  Art and the Rabbis—Through the reading of Talmudic texts, we will learn about the unease the rabbis felt about art, even as many of them yet had a sense of aesthetic appreciation. Thursday, February 28, 7:30 PM  Art and the Jewish Renaissance—Especially in Italy, Jews caught the Renaissance spirit, mining their own past for early examples of the most admired civic culture of the day. Thursday, March 14, 7:30 PM  Jews and Music—Liturgical music, folk music, Mahler, Schoenberg, Copland…what makes it Jewish music? Tuesday, April 9, 7:30 PM  Jews and Painting—Jewish themes, like Abraham’s near-sacrifice of Isaac, have long been subjects of the greatest western artists; many of those great artists were Jews. How did this happen? Thursday, May 16, 7:30 PM  Art and the Holocaust—From before the war, from the camps, and certainly since, the Holocaust has in- spired artistic works beyond number. Does this say something about the importance of art to the Jews? Thursday, June 13, 7:30 PM

5 GIL HOFFMAN, THE JERUSALEM POST BLOOM FAMILY MEMORIAL LECTURE

Gil Hoffman, Chief Political Correspondent, The Jerusalem Post To Speak at TBA

On Sunday, November 11, 2018, at 6:30 PM, Temple B’nai Abraham Congregational Learning will present a lecture on Best Ever or Destroyed Forever: The US-Israel Relationship in the Era of Netanyahu and Trump with Gil Hoffman, Chief Political Correspondent, The Jerusalem Post. Free and open to the community.

A Historian Reflects on Israel’s Past and Future Professor David N. Myers Sadie and Ludwig Kahn Chair in Jewish History, UCLA

Thursday, March 28, 2019, 7:30 PM, at TBA

Israel was founded 70 years ago, but its future is as unknowable today as it was in 1948. Israel’s army is the most powerful in the region. Recent governments have sought new strategic alliances, making friends with former enemies, and alienating longstanding allies. Its economy is one of the most robust in the world, even as economic disparity widens. The Occupation, majority-minority relations, a serious housing shortage, innumerable matters of “church and state” and other domestic matters fuel ongoing tumult. The struggle to remain both democratic and Jewish grows more and more complex.

What is Israel’s future? Prof. David Myers, a frequent visitor to Temple B’nai Abraham, believes that to understand Israel’s future, it is important to understand its past. Author of numerous definitive works on Jewish and Israeli history, a frequent visitor to Israeli universities, and commen- tator on contemporary Israel, Myers will explore what Israel’s history can teach us about its future, both that which we can know, and that for Prof. David N. Myers which we hope. Photo credit: Scarlett Freund

Prof. David Myers has been on the faculty of UCLA since 1991, and has served as both Chair of its Depart- ment of History and Director of its Center for Jewish Studies. For the year 2017-2018, Myers was also Pres- ident of the Center for Jewish History in New York City. One of his generation’s most respected Jewish his- torians, Myers is the author or editor of fifteen books, has written hundreds of scholarly and popular arti- cles, and has lectured at universities throughout North America, as well as in France, Germany, Russia, The Netherlands, and, of course, Israel.

7 A MUSICAL INTERLUDE A MUSICAL INTERLUDE AT TBA

Please join us on Sunday, November 4, at 3:00 PM, for a musical interlude celebrating and welcoming our new Johannus Ecclesia Organ to Temple B’nai Abraham. In addition to our organist, Sandor Szabo, and our cantor, Jessica Epstein, we will be joined by cellist Andrew Kim and violinist Christopher Collins Lee.

Works by Handel, Saint-Saëns, and Vierne will show the many styles, settings and tunings of this wonderful digital instrument. Light refreshments will be served.

We look forward to acknowledging at this event the generosity of the benefactors who funded the purchase of the new organ.

Sándor Szabó has a well-established reputation as “one of the leading organists in the state” and is “the busiest musician in New Jersey” [Classical New Jersey Society Journal]. Dr. Szabó is actively engaged as conductor, organist, pianist, harpsichordist, vocal coach, arranger and adjudicator throughout Europe, Canada and the United States. He has performed in major concert halls and cathedrals in Europe and North America. Dr. Szabó was educated in Yugoslavia, graduating from the University of Novi Sad with the diploma “Academic Musician in the Piano Art.” Subsequently, he received his master’s degree from the University of Music Arts, Belgrade. Dr. Szabó holds master’s degrees in organ performance and sacred music from Westminster Choir College, where he was awarded the full-tuition Currin scholarship. In addition, he has earned a DMA in piano performance from Boston University. He also holds the Fellowship Certificate (FAGO) from the American Guild of Organists. Currently, Dr. Szabó is the Minister of Music at The Reformed Church of Bronxville, NY, Music Director/Conductor of The Oratorio Sándor Szabó Society of New Jersey, and Organist/Choir Director at Temple B’nai Abraham.

Andrew Y. Kim, cellist, is Founder and Music Director of the monthly concert series at Andy Kim Music Studio in Northvale, New Jersey since July 2011; Andrew Kim is originally from Seoul, South Korea. Mr. Kim was invit- ed to study with Heidi Litchauer at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria in 1976. In 1978, he came to the United States to study with the world famous cellist Aldo Parisot at School of Music. Kim was a frequent participant of the master classes given by Janos Starker at Yale Uni- versity. He subsequently became a member of the upstart Essex Quartet, and from 1988 through 1996 he performed extensively throughout North America as a member of the quartet under the auspicious Columbia Artists Managements. The tour engagements with the Essex Quartet included critically acclaimed recitals in Chicago, Los Angeles, Phil- adelphia, and New York. As an active chamber musician, Mr. Kim collaborated with such artists as Alexander Schneider, Josef Gingold, Emanuel Ax, Yo Yo Ma, Joseph Kalichstein, Stanley Drucker, Ani Kavafian, Nathaniel Rosen, Ariel Rudiakov, and many of this coun- try’s great string quartets including the Tokyo, Cleveland, Emerson, and the Juilliard. He served as a teaching assistant to Joel Krosnick of the Juilliard String Quartet at the Juil- liard School. Also he served as a chamber music faculty member at the Arcady Music Festival in Bar Harbor, Maine, Palisades Arts Summer Festival in Englewood, New Jersey, Andrew Y. Kim and Bay View Music Festival in Bay View, Michigan. He often visits , Vermont to join the Manchester Music Festival with which he toured the state of Vermont and New York exclusively.

8 Celebrating & Welcoming Our New Johannus Ecclesia Organ to TBA

Mr. Kim was a member of the promising Young Audience of New York and gave frequent string quartet lec- tures for the public schools in the five boroughs of New York City. He currently serves on the faculty of the Summertrios in Pennsylvania. Known as a missionary cellist, Mr. Kim frequently travels to the Peruvian side of the Amazon villages with a several doctors to play for the indigenous children and adults while they receive medical treatment. He plays Carlo Antonio Testore , circa 1699.

Christopher Collins Lee, violinist, became a protégé of Zino Francescatti at the age of sixteen, traveling with him throughout Europe on his final tours. He studied violin and composition at Curtis and Juilliard, earned a Doctorate degree, was a Fulbright Scholar, and has been awarded four Honorary Doctorate degrees. His other principal teachers were Dorothy DeLay, Arthur Grumiaux, Henryk Szeryng and Nathan Milstein. He has received top prizes in the Carl Flesch International Competition, the Tibor Varga International Competition, the J.S. Bach International Violin Competition, The Lion D’or of the French government, a Guggenheim Grant, the Belgian Ameri- can Award, and The Fritz Kreisler Prize. As an Official Musical Ambassador of the U.S. Department of State, he has played thousands of concerts worldwide under their auspices, including forty solo concert tours of Asia. In his youth, he introduced the violin to parts of Tibet, Singapore and the island of Macao. It is interesting to note that one of his recordings was chosen to represent human Christopher Collins Lee culture on the Voyager Time Capsule, which is now leaving our solar system.

Christopher Collins Lee has long been a favorite at the Marlboro, Aspen, Mozarteum, Maggio Musicale and other celebrated music festivals around the world. Christopher Collins Lee has performed violin concerti with , , Sergiu Commissiona, Lucas Foss, and Arthur Fiedler among many other conductors. Works which have been premiered by him, some also in their first recording, include Aaron Copland’s Ballades for Violin and Piano with Leonard Bernstein playing the piano; Variations from the opera, “Daphne” by Richard Strauss; Darius Milhaud’s “Second Sonata"; "Final Alice” by David del Tredici; and the Concertino by Xavier Montsalvadge at an internationally televised gala attended by the octogenarian composer and the King of Spain, still frequently rebroadcast in Latin American countries. Christopher Collins Lee has recorded for CBS, Desto, Everest, Delos, Arista and the Quattro Corde labels. His popular concert and lecture series on Mozart’s Life and Times are in great demand. He plays the celebrated 1771 “Accardo” violin made in Turin, Italy by Giovanni Baptista Guadagnini.
