  • The Colonial Clergy of the Middle Colonies New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania 1628-1776
The Colonial Clergy of the Middle Colonies New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania 1628-1776 BY FREDERICK LEWIS WEIS EDITOR'S NOTE NE of the most useful tools in the chest of the bibliog- O rapher, historian, and librarian is the series of little volumes by Dr. Weis on the colonial clergy. The gap in this series, the volume on the clergy of the Middle Colonies, was proving such a great hindrance to our revision of Evans' American Bibliography, that we have decided to print this volume for our own use, and to publish it in order to share it with others. The first volume of this series. The Colonial Clergy and the Colonial Churches of New England (Lancaster, 1936), is out of print. The Colonial Clergy of Maryland, Delaware, and Georgia (Lancaster, 1950), and The Colonial Clergy of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina (Boston, 1955) may be obtained of the author (at Dublin, New Hampshire) for $3 a volume. The institutional data which is provided at the end of the New England volume is for the other colonies issued in a separate volume. The Colonial Churches and the Colonial Clergy in the Middle and Southern Colonies (Lancaster, 1938), which is still available from the author. The biographical data on the clergy of the Middle Colonies here printed is also available in monograph form from the American Antiquarian Society. C. K. Devonshire Parish Registers. General Editor: THOS. M. BLAGG, F.S.A. v.^ VOL. II. Edited by A. TERRY SATTERFORD. Condon Issued to the Subscribers by Phillimore & Co., Ltd. 124, Chancery Lane. 1915- PREFACE. Six years have elapsed since tlie first volume of Devonshire Marriage Registers was issued and during those years the work- has been practically at a standstill, in strange contrast to the adjoining counties of Cornwall, Somerset, and Dorset, where the Marriage Registers of 133, 107 and 58 parishes respectively have now been printed. This lack of progress in Devon has been due partly to the death of Mr. W. P. W. Phillimore to whose inception the entire Series is due and who edited the first volume, but chiefly to the poor support forthcoming from Devon men, in comparison with that accorded to the Series in other counties by those interested in their Records. Thus the first volume for Devonshire was issued at a substantial loss. Now that the work has been resumed, it is hoped that the support received will be more proportionate to the size and importance of the county, and so will enable the Devonshire Marriage Registers to be printed on a uniform plan and with such regularity of output as will render them safe from further loss and readily accessible to the student and genealogical searcher.

  • Statement of Robert Denny
WORCESTER, MASS. PRESS OF CHAS. HAMILTON. 1886. HOW IT HAPPENED. My brother, Joseph A. Denny of Leicester, Mass., died early in the year of 1875. He had long manifested a deep interest in the history of his ancestors, and had from time to time, as he had opportunity, collected statistics of names, dates of birth, &c., of all the different branches of his father's family with whom he had intercourse. Mrs. Grace Denny's letters to her son Daniel, written from her home in England, which had come into his possession, induced him to pursue his investigations the ,other side of the Atlantic, and having ascertained that the name was ~tin known there, he visited England in the summer of 1874 for the purpose of obtaining all the information he could in regard to the Denny family. Previous to this time nothing was known in this country of the ancestry of Daniel Denny, who was the :firs~ to emigrate to America, except what was revealed in the letters of Mrs. Grace, above refelTed to. Re visited the old homestead in Combs, and found it still in the possession of the descendants of Denny, whose ancestors owned and occupied it more than four hundred years before. The result of this visit was the unearthing from old tin trunks and boxes, wills, deeds and other documents, that brought to light what was before unknown to any then living, the history of the family for four centuries. IV· HOW IT HAPPENED. He ,returned home in the autumn, feeling well paid by the success of the trip, and intending, no doubt, to arrange the information thus obtained in shape for publication, but before he had taken any steps in' that direction he was called from his earthly labors.
