GAY FAULKNER: UNCOVERING A HOMOSEXUAL PRESENCE IN YOKNAPATAWPHA AND BEYOND A dissertation presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English The University of Mississippi by PHILLIP ANDREW GORDON June 2013 Copyright Phillip Andrew Gordon 2013 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This dissertation is a biographical study of William Faulkner (1897-1962) as his life coincided with a particular moment in LGBT history when the words homosexual and queer were undergoing profound changes and when our contemporary understanding of gay identity was becoming a widespread and recognizable epistemology. The connections forged in this study--based on archival research from Joseph Blotner’s extensive biographical notes--reveal a version of Faulkner distinctly not anxious about homosexuality and, in fact, often quite comfortable with gay men and living in gay environments (New Orleans, New York). From these connections, I reassess Faulkner’s pre-marriage writings (1918-1929) for their prolific reference to homosexual themes.

  • Mixed-Orientation Marriages by Joe Kort
Mixed-Orientation Marriages by Joe Kort Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2006 glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Mixed-orientation marriages--in which one partner is straight and the other is gay or lesbian--are becoming more visible. Ang Lee's Academy Award-nominated movie Brokeback Mountain (2005), which depicted gay men who fall in love with each other though they are heterosexually married, gave a human face to what the media referred to as "Brokeback Marriages." As homosexuality becomes more accepted by our society, more gay men and lesbians feel comfortable coming out in their heterosexual marriages, though the exact number of mixed-orientation marriages is unknown. Data on these marriages is unreliable because of the inconsistent ways of defining "gay" or "lesbian" in demographic research. Statistics from the Straight Spouse Network contend that up to two million gay men, lesbians, and bisexuals in the United States are or have been heterosexually married. Demographer Gary Gates recently found that of the 27 million American men currently married, 1.6 percent, or 436,000, identify themselves as gay or bisexual. Research shows that more than 80% of mixed-orientation marriages end in divorce. But divorce is not necessarily inevitable for these marriages. When a gay spouse steps out of the closet, the straight partner usually goes immediately in. Each partner has a "coming-out" process to undergo, but they can negotiate this process together, as a couple. Often, the dilemma of partners in mixed-orientation marriages is centered not around sex, but around love. Some of these couples have been married for decades; many have children, and have built good lives together; they feel a deep and abiding love for one another.

  • (Prohibition) Act, 2013 on Customary “Female Husband Marriage” Or “Woman-To-Woman Marriage” in Nigeria
Legal Implications of Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2013 on Customary “Female Husband Marriage” or “Woman-to-Woman Marriage” in Nigeria Oyedotun Omoteye Akinlade, M. T. ABSRTACT Female husband marriage has been an age-long customary practice in many parts of Nigeria. The practice embedded in the customary law of the people. This study critically examines of legal implications of same-sex marriage (Prohibition) Act, 2013 on customary “female husband marriage” or “woman-to-woman marriage” in Nigeria. It is therefore necessary to give the statutory and judicial considerations of custom and customary law as these terms are relevant to this study. The statutory and judicial considerations together with the provisions of same-sex law form the legal framework of this work. The study observes that customary female husband or woman-to-woman marriage has been documented in many African cultures. The position of this study is that African female-husband and male-daughter practices are different from the woman-to-woman marriages or lesbianism practiced in the Western world. Whereas the African practices are to enable the people who face challenges in child bearing, the lesbianism practiced in the Western world and elsewhere is mainly for sexual satisfaction. Keywords: Female uusband marriage, woman-to-woman marriage, same- sex marriage, customary law, lesbianism, homosexual INTRODUCTION Like communities in Europe, America and Asia, some ethnic groups in Africa have been practicing female husband marriage otherwise known as woman-to-woman marriage from time immemorial. Customary female husband or woman-to-woman marriage has been documented in more than 30 African ethnic groups.1 These include Zulu, Lovedu, sotho in Southern Africa; Kukuyu, Nandi, Nuer in East Africa; Yoruba in the Western Nigeria, Igbo in the South East Nigeria, and Ibibio, Annang, Oron, Efik, Ejaghan, Etung and Ogoja in the South-South Nigeria.

  • LGBTQ+ Histories and Narratives the Rainbow Flag Has Represented
LGBTQ+ Histories and Narratives The Rainbow Flag has represented individuals and communities under, and a part of, the rainbow for decades. Every color illustrates a fundamental element of the LGBTQ+ community (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, Transgender/sexual, Queer and other identities). However brown, black and variations of purple were recently added to the Rainbow Flag to distinctively highlight, and most importantly include all people of color within the LGBTQ+ community. The histories and narratives of people of color LGBTQ+ individuals and leaders has greatly contributed to and served as pillars of change and catalyst for progress. The historical protests at Stonewall, lesbians advocating for gay men during the beginning height of the 80’s HIV/AIDS epidemic and the lack of authentic representation and collaborations with queer people of color, or black LGBTQ+ individuals. This collection is a listing of essential, primary reference materials celebrates multiple identities “under the rainbow,” with historical materials highlights significant and courageous blacks within the LGBTQ+ community. Some historical LGBTQ+ figures, from the Atlanta area and Georgia, are also included. Resources include histories, personal accounts, documentaries and some works of fiction to celebrate and illustrate African, African American and Caribbean communities, and issues— at an intersection many LGBTQ+ people of color face. A great portion of this bibliography, also, includes Afro-Hispanic and Latino people of color that served as a catalyst for change, and currently continues to inspire others. Sources include call numbers, for patrons to easily inquire and obtain resources. Auburn Avenue Research Library maintains non-circulating policies of its collection; however, patrons are able to utilize materials in-house.

  • Representations of Indentureship in Indo-Caribbean Literature from 1960 to the Present
ABSTRACT Title of Document: UNHOMELY STIRRINGS: REPRESENTATIONS OF INDENTURESHIP IN INDO-CARIBBEAN LITERATURE FROM 1960 TO THE PRESENT Anita Baksh, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Directed By: Professor Merle Collins, Department of English This dissertation investigates the ways in which East Indian Caribbean (Indo- Caribbean) writers negotiate history, identity, and belonging. Nineteenth-century government officials and plantation owners described Indian indentureship (1838- 1917) in the British West Indies as a contractual system of employment implemented after abolition and as a civilizing mechanism aimed at reforming heathen laborers. Challenging these accounts, historians have shown that the system was a new mode of exploitation. Colonial administrators used coercive tactics to control workers and implemented strategic laws to confine Indians to the plantation. These policies constructed Indians as foreigners and interlopers in colonial society, perceptions that have significantly impacted the formation of Indo-Caribbean subjectivities and Indo- Caribbean claims to postcolonial citizenship in the region. Reading both canonical and lesser known texts, my project argues that Indo-Caribbean writers frequently engage with indentureship as a means to come to terms with this history of oppression and as a way to contest their elision in Anglophone Caribbean culture more widely. Drawing on postcolonial theory, I examine works published from 1960 to the present by authors from Guyana and Trinidad, countries where Indians constitute a significant portion of the population. My analysis begins in the 1960s because it was at this time that literary and political debates began to focus on decolonization and on defining a culture distinct from Britain. Given that Indian indentures were unable to record their own experiences, their perspectives are largely omitted from the Caribbean historiography.
