Trondheim

Trondheim is the third largest city in Norway with its 187 000 inhabitants. Other major cities in Norways are Bergen and the capital Oslo. Trondheim is said to be founded in 997 by Olav Tryggvason, a retired Viking and later crowned king of Norway.

A statue of Olav Tryggvason is found in the city center.

The construction of started around 1070 and it is the northernmost medieval cathedral in the world. Photo Pavel Szubert

The cathedral was built over the burial site of Saint Olav. Saint Olav was canonized in 1164 by Pope Alexander III and thereafter universally recognized as a saint of the Roman . The sculptures on the west side of the church are famous biblical figures, catholic saints and some former Norwegian kings. During maintenance on the sculpture of Archangel Michael, the artist gave him the face of Bob Dylan.

The river runs through the city center. Along Nidelva old tree houses, dating back to the 19th century, is a popular view for tourists. The camera is aimed at , an idyllic district known for its many old tree houses.

NTNU also has a central role in Trondheim. In 1996 the university was established, but with roots back to 1910, when the Norwegian Institute of Technology was established. Today the university has about 40 000 students where 34 000 of the students are located in Trondheim. The remaining are located at the campuses in Gjøvik and Aalesund.

On behalf of the conference crew, we hope you will enjoy the ICSP conference and your stay in Trondheim.

While walking between venues or during your spare time, you might enjoy a stroll through the city centre, where you can experience some of the historical flavor of our more than 1000-year old city:

Nidaros Cathedral The Trondheim cathedral is Norway’s national religious sanctuary, built over the grave of St. Olav. Work on the cathedral first began in 1070, but the oldest extant parts of the structure date from the middle of the 12th century. An extensive restoration effort began in 1869, while work on the impressive west facade with its 57 statues and rose window began in 1901.

The Archbishop's Palace The Archbishop’s Palace is one of the best-preserved building complexes of its kind in Europe and is the oldest secular building in Scandinavia. Construction began in the second half of the 12th century. The building was the Archbishop’s residence until the in 1537.

Bakklandet Coffee shops, small clothing boutiques, antiques stores and more are the hallmark of Bakklandet, a cosy district with distinctive wooden architecture and cobblestone streets. You’ll also get a view from the old city bridge (Gamle Bybro) of the colourful wharf buildings across the Nidelva River on Kjøpmannsgata in Trondheim proper.

The Trampe Bicycle Lift Trondheim is the first city in the world with a lift specifically designed for cyclists. The Trampe Bicycle Lift, developed in Trondheim, goes up the hill at Brubakken near the Gamle Bybro (in Bakklandet), and takes you from the bridge and almost all the way up to the Kristiansten Fort. A sign explains how the mechanism works. If you rent a city bike, you can try it yourself!

Samfundet The round red building on gate is the Student Association (Samfundet) building, constructed in 1927. It is home to concerts, cultural events, bars, a café and restaurants. Samfundet is owned and run by it’s approximately 10 000 members, whose goal is that the "Samfundet will be the natural meeting place for students in Trondheim”.

Bio from their website: ISÁK has been a hype in Sápmi music for a long time, renowned for its energetic live shows and intense presence. Since their debut in 2017 the trio has experienced an overwhelming response in Norway, and now the «sensation from Sápmi» is finally ready to take on the rest of the world.

ISÁK is considered to be a natural successor after Mari Boine, who is known for developing yoik and modernising Sami music for decades. With a new and exciting fusion of traditional yoik, urban synths and a text universe that combines both English and Sami, ISÁK continues to push the limits of Sami music.

ISÁK has been described as "the hottest name in Sápmi music" by the influential folk festival Riddu Riddu. They were recently named winner of "NRK Urbi" by a jury consisting of music director Mats Borch Bugge (NRK P3) and Eirik Havelin from NRK Urørt (New music of the week) among others. The band also won «Best New Music" during the Sami Music Awards in 2018.

The trio consists of vocalist Ella Marie Haetta Isaksen, producer Daniel Eriksen (Alan Walker, The Wombats) and drummer Aleksander Kostopoulos (Mari Boine, Moddi, Adjagas, Pil & Bue).

NB: This concert is part of Olavsfestdagene (read more here https://olavsfest.no/ ), an ongoing festival in Trondheim taking place simultaneously. In case you need to cancel your attendance, please return the ticket to the conference registration desk in order to free up space for other public. Excursion – Wednesday July 31 at 1300 Included in your conference registration is an excursion to one of three alternative destinations. There will be bus transportation from outside the Main Campus at NTNU. Google map for where to meet: https://goo.gl/maps/xpiLcGwXfngkfmXo9

There are three different alternatives

1) Tour Frosta (capacity 50)

2) Tour The Old Mine (capacity 50)

3) Camp Skistua (no max capacity)

Press here to register your preference.

We will manage the capacity constraint by a first-come, first-served principle. Note that the description of the excursions in the form above mention lunch during the trip. Due to logistical matters we will have lunch at the campus before departure. There will however still be some food during the excursion (but not lunch or dinner).

Tour Frosta – Map Frosta

This tour will go to Frosta. The monastery ruins from the Middle Ages by Cistercian monks is worth a visit. The monastery was founded in 1207 and was operational until the Reformation in 1537. There will be room for this as well as a trip to the local outlet selling products such as beer, soaps and skin products from Tautra Mariakloster.

Klostergården is offering beer tasting of the monastery farm's own brewed beer in many varieties. Today they brew approximately 30 different beers.

Valberg Slektsgård is the location for inspiring experiences and memorable moments. Today’s lunch is set on this farm, and you will get a real taste food put together by several local ingredients, as the nature decides the menu.

After enjoying a memorable lunch, the tour will continue to «Frostatinget», a well known attraction dated way back, as it was one of Norway’s four major lagting in the middle ages.

Tour The Old Mine – Map Løkken Verk

On this tour, you will get the chance to visit the Old Mine. The Old Mine is a mine that was operative in the late 1600s to 1987, and contained the largest deposits of its kind in Norway.

Today, it contains a large underground cavern where the miners once used to work, and what remains is the impressive dimensions of it. The Fagerli Hall that is 400m deep inside the mountain is often used for concerts and events because of the good acoustics.

After a guided visit to the Old Mine, you will get a tour in the museum as well, before a lunch at Bårdshaug Herregård. Originally, a parsonage, Bårdshaug Herregård was purchased by architect Christian Thams in the 1890s.

Known as a founding member of designing and exporting log buildings, he translated his work into renovating Bårdshaug Herregård to become a distinctive manor home. Located here you will enjoy a lunch from local food and producers, which use regular supplies of fresh produce from the village and surrounding area.

Camp Skistua – Map Skistua

With Bymarka and Skistua, we have put together a package full of experiences. Here you will try things you have never done before, work together, feel the adrenaline roar and spend a whole day in fresh air. Some of the posts are set up for a sense of mastery and adrenaline rush, but others are more for the brain that needs a little trim. We constantly emphasize cooperation and team building, but mostly; fun!

We focus on harmony with the nature and play on its premises. Weather conditions will form the basis for such a day. We will also serve some light food lunch here, such as barbeque hot dogs and we will also serve coffee. As this is a fun competition, we also get a winning team in the end. Join Camp Skistua for great fun

Conference Dinner – August 1 at 1900 The XV ICSP conference invites to a conference dinner at Palmehaven, a restaurant located at the newly refurbished 5-star hotel Britannia.
