Defining Death as “More Life”: Unpublished Letters by George MacDonald Glenn Edward Sadler Who lives, he dies; who dies, he is alive. Phantastes ch. XIII ost readers of George MacDonald’s fiction, especially of his faerieM romances and fairytales, will recall his penetrating treatment of the subject of death and dying. A classic passage occurs, for example, at the conclusion of The Golden Key, when the Old Man of the Sea finally asks Mossy the ultimate question: [end of page 4] “You have tasted death now,” said the Old Man. “Is it good?” “It is good,” said Mossy. “It is better than life.” “No,” said the Old Man: “it is only more life.”1 Equally moving, in spite of its sentimentality, is the ending of At the Back of the North Wind, which depicts graphically Diamond’s dream-in- sleep death. Similarly, there is the ethereal death of the king, who becomes a sacrifice of “flaming red roses,” viewed by Curdie, at the end ofThe Princess and Curdie. As a writer of parables and fairytales, George MacDonald is at his best when he is seeing death through the eyes of a child. Through the eyes of his fictional children—Mossy, Diamond and Curdie—MacDonald envisions his cardinal belief in the cosmic role of the child, who as a redemptive figure participates in and exemplifies universal love and immortality. Mossy and Tangle become agents of life-giving renewal. Diamond is a source of lasting love. And Curdie is a symbol of universal victory over evil. In each case it is the process of dying-into-life (“more life”) that is MacDonald’s major concern: it is a theme which is to be found in everything he wrote. -

Nielsen Music has also had an amazing, transformative year. Technological advancements and new partnerships have allowed us to provide robust, comprehensive data in more accessible, customizable and useful ways in 2017. Over the past year, we received a record number of requests for Nielsen Music research and insight reports. Welcome to the Nielsen Music Year-End Report, which examines the trends that shaped the Paul Shaver Canadian music industry in 2017 with definitive consumption figures and charts. Vice President/ Head of Nielsen Music Canada Overall consumption of albums, songs and On-Demand Audio streaming grew 13.6% year-over- year. On-Demand Audio streaming offset decreases in track and album sales and, on December 3, for the first time in history, it surpassed the 900 million per week mark. Ed Sheeran led all artists in Canada with overall consumption and had the top-selling album of the year. Six Canadians had No. 1 albums on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart in 2017, including The Weeknd’s Starboy, Drake’s More Life, Arcade Fire’s Everything Now, Shania Twain’s Now, Pierre Lapointe’s La Science Du Coeur and Gord Downie’s Introduce Yerself. The passing of Gord Downie captured the nation’s attention. In the week following his death, The Tragically Hip’s overall consumption increased by 1,000% over the previous week. It’s a stacked bill featuring a few rock ‘n’ roll legends, folk and soul upstarts and even a handful of local acts. There will be music happening on three stages and everywhere you look there will be something incredible taking place. There are also going to be after parties going on in the heart of the town. The band possesses soothing acoustic-based rock music that has as much power and emphasis as an act that’s fully electrified. History of the Northampton Survival Center The Northampton Survival Center opened in November of 1979 in the Parish Hall of St. John’s Episcopal Church on Elm Street. The initial funding for the Center came from a grant awarded through the Diocese’s Venture in Missions Project. The hard work, vision and dedication required to organize a food pantry came from area members of the religious and social services communities. From the minute it opened its doors, the Survival Center fulfilled a long-standing need: distributing food to people in emergency situations and to help people with low-incomes who require assistance in making ends meet on a short term basis. -

Kegler1* , Erin Lebow-Skelley1, Jaimie Lea2, Regine Haardörfer1, Adrienne Lefevre1, Pam Diggs3 and Sally Herndon4 Abstract Background: Household smoke-free home rules cannot fully protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke (SHS) if they live in multi-unit housing (MUH). Instead, property-level smoke-free policies are needed to prevent SHS incursion into apartment units and to keep common areas smoke-free. Smoke-free policies are usually at the discretion of property management companies and owners within the context of market-rate and privately-owned affordable housing in the U.S. Methods: Semi-structured interviews on the policy development, implementation and enforcement experiences of 21 different privately-owned affordable housing management companies were conducted with representatives from properties in North Carolina and Georgia who had established smoke-free policies before 2016. Results: The decision to adopt was typically made by corporate leadership, board members, owners or property managers, with relatively little resident input. Policy details were influenced by property layout, perceptions of how best to facilitate compliance and enforcement, and cost of creating a designated smoking area. Policies were implemented through inclusion in leases, lease addenda or house rules with 6 months’ notice most common. Participants thought having a written policy, the norms and culture of the housing community, public norms for smoke-free environments, and resident awareness of the rules and their consequences, aided with compliance.
