Inevitable...By Robert DeFrankReview of an advanced reader copy. This new installment in the sprawling multiworld dark fantasy epic of Lovecraftian fantasy is a treat for fans of the saga and an excellent entry point into the series for newcomers. Again we visit the world of On the Matter of the Red Hand, Slave of the Sky Captain and Regarding Oaths and the Whispering Flame, but from the perspective of those in a less civilized part of the world. In a wasteland of the Weird West where twisted monstrosities prey on the survivors of humanity, the husks of ancient steampunk technology awake to malevolent life, and what law and order exists comes from the barrel of a gun, Sierra and her teacher, Domingo, are gunslingers armed with enchanted weapons fit for the killing of monsters and on a quest to find the Last City of Man and with it the hopes to save a world that is sliding into twilight. To find the path to that city, they must first confront the Harridan: a near legendary monster that has struck horror into the hearts of children for centuries, and the reality of that immortal witch makes the legends pale by comparison. The quest takes our brave warriors into ancient ruins filled with a sleeping but malevolent power that the Harridan is intent on harnessing. To save the world and prevent a new threat from emerging, Sierra and Domingo will face the shocking truths behind their worldrsquo;s legends.A short, sharp and fast-paced thriller of western action, as well as an intriguing introduction to the lore of this dystopian world. Some of the questions hinted at in other books are revealed, while more are raised. I particularly enjoyed the tangible sense of history that had passed on to myth, and the detailed cultures and terms in Spanish-variant language that suited this world. And the Harridan herself has all the primal horror of a fairy tale monster, and that is grim indeed. Donrsquo;t hesitate to give it a try!4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful dystopian, weird west, thrillerBy catwoman1aDomingo is mentor to Sierra. He is trying to teach her to think about what she is doing and why, and not for her to just act out of anger and hate. Together they are on a quest to search for the Harridan, a 600 year old hag, because she knows the location of Teredon, The Last City of Man. Even though they are teacher and student, you see and feel the camaraderie between Domingo and Sierra, and the caring they have for each other. There is a bit of steampunk, dark fantasy and technothriller in a completely wonderful mix in this thriller. This is a whole new dystopian, weird west, steampunk world created by JM Guillen, an imagination that brings you to the Lovecraftian horror of duariin, fungus and hobbersquo;s, to name a few. It is amazing to me how this fictional world melds so perfectly within the different genre offered. I think JM Guillen has created a totally new type of fiction, perhaps dystwestpunk?3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Isanor's truth is never easy, never soft. But that is their road.By NekkoI read all genre currently available from this author and get very excited when a new book comes out. He has a wonderfully weird take on- is it a dystopian future or a distant alternate past? Hard to say, there are so many doors in the endless city. This tale is set on his world of Caestre, a world overtaken by apocalypse many generations before. Two riders of Isanor's justice travel the wastes in pursuit of the Harridan, an evil legend come to life and a possible link to the lost last city of man. The story has a slightly steampunk flavored feel of the American old west about it. Hard men, hard truths and a hard road all lead far beyond the bounds of reality or sanity. One apprentice will find at the end, the beginning of her own journey among the very hard truths they discover.......Having read both I would say this story could be read equally well before or after On the Matter of the Red Hand -which is contemporary in time to Wintersteel and set in the same world. A weird west thriller- with a Lovecraftian twist! Ancient and uncanny secrets dwell in the wastes of the forsaken Vast. Sierra's entire world is haunted with living nightmares. The horrific tides of the Shroud have washed away entire civilizations, leaving only madness and horrific monsters in its wake. And yet, people like Sierra del Amaija survive. Deep within Barrens of the Crescent, this fiery young woman and her Maestro strive against horrific darkness and ancient malevolence. Domingo and Sierra are pilgrims on an impossible quest- they seek the mythic and lost city of Teredon. To find it, they battle against tainted abominations, demented little hobbes, and the ever present threat of losing their own minds to horror and depravity. The remnants of humanity they encounter often wonder if Domingo is a bit touched- no one else truly believes in the lost city. Yet after years of seeking, he has finally found a ribbon of truth. He has learned of a woman who may know the path to Teredon- A woman who seethes with sorcery and tainted darkness. A seven hundred year old tainted monstrosity who only spreads horror and despair. These facts are not enough to bend Domingo's will. Together, he and his aprendez delve deep into the darkness of the world, pursuing a depraved witch who is consumed by madness. What they find there will echo across existencehellip; What they find will shape entire worlds. About the AuthorNovelist, weird fiction writer, and future ruler of the Earth. JM Guillen is not your average writer of odd things. He is the half-mad constructor of "The Paean of Sundered Dreams", a puzzle of a story that weaves together realms of steampunk, fantasy, and science fiction. In his spare time, he summons strange things from beyond the stars, and never rues the day.
