Follow the Band: Community Brass Bands in the Scottish Borders Gillian French Doctor of Philosophy University of Edinburgh 2014 Abstract This thesis presents research into the history and contemporary context of brass bands in the Scottish Borders. It discusses how the survival of the brass bands in the Scottish Borders can be accounted for over the last 150 years, in particular with regard to the continuity of their interaction with the community which has enabled them to overcome cultural, social and demographic changes. The textile industry which provided a stimulus for the formation of the brass bands in the nineteenth century has largely disappeared, but the traditional role of the bands has been carried forward to the present day. Previous study of the social and cultural history of the brass band movement has concentrated on the history of brass banding in the North of England. Although research into the history of brass bands has been carried out in other areas of Britain such as the South of England this is the first in-depth study of these bands in a region of Scotland. This research follows previous studies of amateur music-making in specific locations by studying in detail the brass bands that exist in seven towns and one village of the Scottish Borders where the bands can date their formation to the mid-nineteenth century. Historical and archival research has provided most of the data relating to the first hundred years, including the use of individual band archives, local newspaper archives and museum records. Ethnographic methods, including interviews and participant observation, have provided the data for more recent times. Details of brass band repertoires have been extracted from various sources including musical examples taken from individual band libraries. A central research finding is the strong relationship of the brass bands with their local communities, particularly the support given to the bands by local people and the way in which the bands support their communities by providing music for civic and community events. The close relationship of the brass bands with their local communities has been fundamental in providing the means by which the bands have been sustained over time. There is a strong Scottish Borders identity that links the towns, especially through family ties, and this is also found in a musical repertoire with songs that are specifically connected to the region and to individual i towns. By playing this music for civic and community events, especially at the time for the Common Ridings which are annual events unique to the Scottish Borders, the brass bands have provided a service to the community which has ensured their survival. ii Acknowledgements I wish to thank my supervisors, Dr Katie Overy (Reid School of Music) and Dr Katherine Campbell (School of Celtic and Scottish Studies) for their advice, guidance and support throughout my research.     The Early Stewart Kings, the Lordship of the Isles, and Ireland, c.1371-c.14331 Simon Egan 31 THE IRISH ANNALS record that in the summer of 1433, a large MacDonald war fleet descended upon the eastern coast of Ulster.2 Though the precise location is uncertain, it appears that this force landed somewhere in the modern-day barony of Dufferin; then a lordship situated on the east coast of County Down and controlled by the Anglo-Irish White family. Upon arrival the commander of the Scottish fleet, whom numerous annals refer to simply as ‘MacDomhnaill na h-Alban’(i.e., MacDonald of Scotland), was received by Eoghan O’Neill, the lord of Tyrone. These leaders appear to have entered into some form of council with one another before agreeing to combine their armed forces and embark upon what eventually amounted to an impressive military campaign against Eoghan’s main rival, Niall Garbh O’Donnell (d.1439), the lord of Tyrconnell. Moreover, the success of this joint military venture had a major impact not only upon the politics of Ulster, where it saw Eoghan established as the dominant magnate, it had serious ramifications for the balance of power within Scotland and the fortunes of the MacDonalds. The significance of the MacDonald intervention in Ulster has received very little attention within the historiography of late medieval Ireland and Scotland.3 Broadly speaking historians have tended to view medieval Gaelic Ireland and Gaelic Scotland as separate cultural and political spheres, rather than exploring how both regions were highly interconnected through ties of dynastic politics and common political and military interest.4 Instead scholars 1 I would like to thank the anonymous peer reviewer for their constructive comments which improved this essay significantly.

Context The Tweed Valley Forest Park is located along the Tweed Valley between Peebles in the west and the confluence of the Tweed Valley and the Ettrick Water to the east. Diagram LA_01 shows the 8 FLS Forest Blocks within the Tweed Valley. There are a varied mix of landscape elements within the Tweed Valley with forestry, woodland, open hillsides and pastoral farmland all in close proximity. The valley floor has a diverse land use of towns/villages, scattered settlement, farm steadings, woodlands, pasture and estates. Woodland is a significant feature in the Tweed Valley with a mix of woodland belts, farm woodlands, policy woodlands and forestry. Forests on valley slopes and adjacent summits are a typical feature. A series of estate landscapes give visual diversity to the Tweed Valley which include historical woodland plantings. The flat valley bottom is wider to the west and narrows after Innerleithen through to Yair before widening again. Small and medium scale rounded hills close to settlement with woodland cover contrasts with the relatively flat pastoral valley. These hills provide a backdrop to the settlements and a sense of enclosure within the valley.
