10/23/2020 News in brief - Mark Barnett, News and events, Alumni & Friends, University of Otago, New Zealand Making your dreams a reality Home News and events Friday 18 September 2020 Otago alumnus Mark Barnett (BSc Chemistry, 2000), has followed his motor racing dreams and spent more than 13 years working for some of the world’s leading motorsports companies. He is currently the Director of Research and Innovation at McLaren Racing in the United Kingdom. Originally from Southland, Mark grew up on a farm near Nightcaps and completed high school in Invercargill, before heading to Otago to study. “I think Otago is a nice size and a lovely location to be a student. The centralised nature, particularly the shops and businesses, mean that the students all generally live together and provides for a great atmosphere to study in. “I lived in Oxford for a long time after moving to the UK and many say that they are similar centres and I have to admit after spending considerable time in both I have to agree.” Mark attended Studholme College in his first year at the University, then spent two years flatting before moving to Christchurch to study Mechanical Engineering. “I always needed to believe in the application of what I was studying, and I decided early on that I wanted to do engineering as a way of working in motorsport. So, I added some Maths papers while at Otago to skip the first year of the Mechanical Engineering degree.” https://www.otago.ac.nz/alumni/news/O24newsinbrief2.html 1/3 10/23/2020 News in brief - Mark Barnett, News and events, Alumni & Friends, University of Otago, New Zealand While at university Mark worked each summer in the local motorsport series as the season fitted in well with the major study break.

News Release BorgWarner Presents 2020 Indianapolis 500 Winner Takuma Sato with Borg-Warner Trophy® Takuma Sato will be the 107th face to be sculpted and fastened onto the iconic trophy Since 2012, BorgWarner has been the official supplier of turbochargers for the NTT IndyCar Series© racecars This will be Sato’s second likeness to be added to the Borg-Warner Trophy®, coming after his first Indianapolis 500 victory in 2017 Indianapolis, Indiana, August 23, 2020 – For the first time in the history of the Indianapolis 500, which dates back to 1911, the race did not take place in the month of May but the delay was worth the wait for Takuma Sato who took the checkered flag, winning the 104th running of the race. With the COVID-19 pandemic delaying the event to August, Sato, driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, led 27 of 200 laps and averaged 157.824 mph topping Scott Dixon of New Zealand. Sato, of Tokyo, Japan, celebrated as Michelle Collins, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for BorgWarner, presented him with the iconic Borg-Warner Trophy® in Victory Circle. Sato’s teammate, Graham Rahal finished the race in third place. The Borg-Warner Trophy is one of the most well-known and elaborate symbols in the history of professional sports. Created in 1936, the sterling silver trophy now stands at 5 feet, 4- 3/4 inches and weighs 110 lbs. Sato’s likeness will be the 107th face to adorn the trophy in honor of his second Indianapolis 500 win. “It is always a privilege for BorgWarner to be involved in the Victory Circle celebration, and in light of the challenges all of us have faced in 2020, being able to carry forward this tradition brings even greater meaning,” said Collins.
