Reflects True America
SPORTS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2016 Brazil thrash archrivals Argentina Brazil, Uruguay march towards 2018 MONTEVIDEO: Brazil thrashed arch-rivals Argentina to tight- en their grip on South America’s 2018 World Cup qualification campaign on Thursday as Uruguay maintained their push towards the finals with a hard-fought defeat of Ecuador. Barcelona superstar Neymar outshone club-mate Lionel Messi with his 50th international goal for Brazil in Belo Horizonte as the five-time World Cup winners romped to a 3-0 win in the Estadio Mineirao. It was a sweet return to the venue for Brazil, who were humiliated 7-1 at the same ground by Germany in the semi-finals of the 2014 World Cup. Neymar’s landmark strike was sandwiched by a spectacular effort from Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and a second-half finish from China-based midfielder Paulinho. The win was a remarkable fifth consecutive qualifying victory under the reign of new coach Tite, who took over following the sacking of Dunga in June after Brazil’s Copa America Centenario debacle, when they failed to advance from the group stage. Brazil now have 24 points from 11 games, one clear of second-placed Uruguay who have 23 points. The Brazilians are six points clear of third-placed Colombia and seven points clear of Ecuador and Chile, who are level on 17 points after 11 games. Argentina meanwhile are languish- ing outside the qualifying places in sixth with 16 points. The two-time world champions-who have taken just two points from their past four qualifiers-now face a crucial game at home to Colombia next Tuesday which they must win to avoid falling further off the pace. -

Instead, Benítez joined me for a lengthy interview via Skype from Chelsea's training headquarters outside London. The season isn't done quite yet -- Chelsea needs to win at home on Sunday to assure a third-place finish and avoid the Champions League qualifying playoff that would come with fourth place. And there remains the outside chance of a third-place playoff with Arsenal if Chelsea and Everton tie 0-0 and Arsenal wins 2-1 at Newcastle. (In that case, Chelsea and Arsenal would finish dead-even on points, goal-differential and goals scored.) Barring that unlikely circumstance, Chelsea and Benítez will come to the U.S. this week for friendlies against Manchester City on Thursday (in St. Louis) and Saturday (in New York). They will be Benítez's last games with Chelsea, he is nevertheless set to part company with CFC on a high note. Benítez happens to be a terrific interview subject, a guy who packs a lot of good stuff into what he says. -
Wenger Seeking Solace in Quest for Seventh FA
SPORTS SATURDAY, MAY 27, 2017 Luiz happy ‘home’ coming paid off COBHAM: Chelsea defender David Luiz admits he took a risk leaving Paris St Germain to come ‘home’ but as he pre- pares for the FA Cup final, having already won the Premier League, it’s a gamble which he believes has reaped divi- dends. The 30-year-old Brazilian was a firm favorite in Paris, an established and respected part of a successful team which won back-to-back domestic ‘trebles’ during his two-year stay in the French capital. That’s a contrast to his first spell at Chelsea when he was heavily criticized by television pundits for the poor quality of his defending-despite eventually being sold for a world record fee of £50million for a defender. So, it’s easy to question why he answered a call just ahead of the 2016/17 campaign to return to Stamford Bridge to a side managed by Antonio Conte who had been tasked with restoring morale after a turbulent season prior to that when they had gone from champions to finishing 10th. His return, was hardly greeted with celebrations either- certainly not outside of Stamford Bridge-and instead described as a panic buy by the home media. So Luiz can understand why many people wondered if he had made a mistake. “I was winning in Paris. I went to Paris for two LONDON: Arsenal’s French manager Arsene Wenger watches from the touchline during the English years and won all the titles in France and I had a great life,” he told journalists at the club Open Day head of today’s Premier League football match between Arsenal and Everton at the Emirates Stadium in London on May final against London rivals Arsenal. -
