Profiles September 23, 2013 Issue Nobody’s Looking at You Eileen Fisher and the art of understatement. By Janet Malcolm September 23, 2013 here is a wish shared by women who consider themselves serious that the clothes T they wear look as if they were heedlessly ung on rather than anxiously selected. The clothes of Eileen Fisher seem to have been designed with the fulllment of that wish in mind. Words like “simple” and “tasteful” and colors like black and gray come to mind along with images of women of a certain age and class—professors, editors, psychotherapists, lawyers, administrators—for whom the hiding of vanity is an inner necessity. The rst Eileen Fisher shop opened in 1987, on Ninth Street in the East Village. Today, Eileen Fisher is an enterprise with nearly a thousand employees. The clothes sell in department stores and catalogues as well as in six Eileen Fisher shops in Manhattan and fty-ve throughout the country. Over the years, the clothes have become less plain and more like the clothes in fashion. Some of the older Eileen Fisher customers grouse about these changes. They want the clothes to remain the same, as if anything can. Surely not clothes. I remember going into the Eileen Fisher shops that were opening around the city in the late nineteen-eighties and never buying anything. I was attracted by the austere beauty of the clothes. They were loose and long and interesting. There was an atmosphere of early modernism in their geometric shapes and murky muted colors. You could see Alma Mahler wearing them around the Bauhaus.

FOUNDERS’ NOTE WELCOME TO THE FABSCRAP SHOP! At our Team Days in January, we casually discussed the idea that maybe we should explore opening a retail location in Manhattan. The dream was a fabric thrift shop! Near the garment district and design schools! Polished in all the ways the warehouse shopping experience is not! And in true FABSCRAP fashion, the idea led to action. By February we’d found a great location and signed a lease. What followed in March, April, and May was a labor of love. We welcomed Lindsey Troop to the FAB Team to help us open and run the Shop. Everyone we knew was recruited to renovate a nail salon into a new, convenient source for sustainable materials. Together we knocked down walls, chose lighting, painted, swept and mopped the dusty basement. We created shelves, built displays, and designed graphics for the walls. The night before we opened was a late one - finally adding all the fabric and getting every detail right - but still, every single member of the FAB team was there. We’re so proud of what we created! And we hoped everyone would love it too.

  • Sustainability and Socially Responsible Labels for Clothing
Teresa Moore 1 Writing II – Summer 2016 Sustainability and Socially Responsible Labels for Clothing A comparison of current clothing labels of sustainable fashion brands practicing corporate social responsibility, sustainable clothing stores, and clothing labels’ effects on consumer purchase intentions. “Trees are poems that earth writes upon the sky We fell them down and turn them into paper That we may record our emptiness” – Kahlil Gibran Kahlil Gibran, the Lebanese-American writer poetically described the process of environmental destruction for the creation and manifestation of our emptiness, our neuroticism, our search for creating something better, which perhaps leads us back to the origin of our search; ourselves, the simple soul looking to make itself better. Surely we can’t deny the practical advances civilization had made in search of science, knowledge, and policy, including the paper on which we write these ideas and record our collective knowledge to advance our lifestyle. The Situation in 2016 – Current Overconsumption of Resources If Kahlil Gibran were alive today, some eighty-five years after his death, he would see the speed at which prioritizing the advancement of lifestyle and knowledge has taken its toll on the environment. In “Natural Capitalism” Hawkins, Lovins and Lovins state, “in the past three decades, one-third of the planet’s resources, its ‘natural wealth,’ has been consumed” (Hawken et al. p.4. 1999). According to the Environmental Protection Agency, “in the U.S., industry admits to releasing over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals a year” (EPA. 2005). With these eye-opening statistics, it is clear current industry practices, resource consumption and waste production are not sustainable.
