WILLIAM, CARDINAL ALLEN, N May 1582 the Papal Nuncio in Paris wrote to Cardinal Galli, Pope IGregory XIII's Secretary of State, to update him on yet another scheme to reconvert England and Scotland to the Catholic faith. The plan had been concocted by the Spanish Ambassador in London, Don Bernardina Men- doza, in consultation with Esme Stuart, Duke of Lennox, the French Duke de Guise, and the Jesuits William Creighton and Robert Persons. It involved landing an invasion force of 8,000 Spanish and Italian soldiers in Scotland. Expanded to 20,000 by an expected rush of devout local recruits, the army would march south into England, overthrow Elizabeth, liberate Mary Queen of Scots, and set her on the throne of both kingdoms. This half-baked scheme, which was welcomed by the Pope as a glorious new crusade, needed a religious figurehead who could command the loyalty of all English Catholics and serve as a rallying-point for soldiers, gentry and the devout Catholic faithful. Everyone agreed that there was only one possible choice. The President of the English College at Rheims, William Allen, should be appointed to the key religious and secular post in the north of England, the bishopric of Durham. Allen, the Nuncio claimed, was a man whose authority and reputation stand so high with the whole nation that his mere presence . will have a greater effect with the English than several thousand soldiers . all the banished gentlemen bear him such reverence that at a word of his they would do anything.' BnnNanD FrsHER, Archivista dell'Archidiocesi di Westminster The Archives in the keeping of the Archbishop of Westmin- ster, or what are more usually called the Westminster Archives, form a unique collection of ecclesiastical documents of the first importance. Owing to the break in our Catholic history with the coming of the Reformation in England, there are however very few medi- aeval documents in this collection. There is a fairly extensive collection of papers relating to Selby Abbey in Yorkshire dating from the 13th to the 16th century. There are some presentments for heresy in the diocese of Norwich in the later half of the 15th century and an early manuscript copy of the Charter of the Chap- ter of rvl/ells Cathedral. The collection becomes a coherent body of docrments from 1558. On November 17th 1558 Elizabeth I imprisoned all the Cath- olic bishops, with the exception of Bishop Kitchin who conform- ed to the State religion. No attempt was made to appoint any- one to replace the bishops and the religious history of the early years of Elizabeth's reign is largely one of drift. Rome was wait- ing perhaps in the hope that Elizabeth might be won over while the vacillating Philip II of Spain was striving successfully to dis- suade the Pope from any action which might offend Elizabeth. Book 2, chapter 29 The Establishment of the English Seminaries in Rheims and Rome, and Their Fruits1 But the Catholics have been most benefitted, consoled, and strengthened by the foundations of the seminaries at Rheims in France and at Rome, which began in this way. The horrors of the queen’s persecution and the Catholics’ troubles were worsening by the day, and certain wise, zealous, and God-fearing men saw that nothing had been able to calm or mitigate the storm. They feared that the English Catholics both in England and abroad would be killed off by age, or abuses in the jails and prisons, or long and arduous exile—or that they would ultimately lose heart, witnessing every day the many savage martyr- doms of their friends and companions. And so they decided that to prevent the Catholic religion from withering on the vine2 in that land, they ought to create a school or seminary for able young Catholics, who would be nurtured and transplanted, and then grow to replace those passing away. Because they had no doubt that, no matter how this sect of perdition3 flourished, it must fall (so long as the Catholics did not despair) and come to an end, as all the others that past centuries had raised up against the Catholic Church and God’s truth had come to an end. For no heretical cult has yet been able to please men for any length of time, nor endure or persevere in one form, instead always going through drastic changes and alterations. We see this in the heresy of the Ari- ans, who, though they had the might of the princes and monarchs of the world upon their side, ultimately came to an end. -

TEXTUS INEDITI ANTONIO POSSEVINO'S TRIBUTE TO EDMUND CAMPION JOHN PATRICK DONNELLY, S.J. - Marquette University, Milwaukee. During June of 1580 Edmund Campion and Robert Persons were smuggled into England and worked with marked success until Campion's capture by the English government on July 17, 1581. He was tried for treason and executed December 1, 1581. The treason charges were widely disbelieved in England and on the Continent; indeed the execution caused such resent ment throughout Catholic Europe that the English government felt com pelled to justify its action. The most important English apology was The Execution of Justice in England, which first appeared anonymously on 1 December 17, 1583 • Its real author was William Cecil, Lord Burghley. An expanded edition was published in 1584; since the English government wanted to present its case to the larger European world as well as to its own subjects, there were Latin, French, Dutch, and probably Italian and 2 German translations as early as 1584 • The news of Campion's execution created considerable stir in far away Poland. Even before Campion's martyrdom the famous Jesuit writer Peter Skarga had incorporated considerable material on the English martyrs in his popular Lives of the Saints of 1579. In 1583 there appeared at Vilna a Polish translation of Campion's Decem Rationes together with a short life of the author3 . -

RECUSANT LITERATURE Description of USF collections by and about Catholics in England during the period of the Penal Laws, beginning with the the accession of Elizabeth I in 1558 and continuing until the Catholic Relief Act of 1791, with special emphasis on the Jesuit presence throughout these two centuries of religious and political conflict. Introduction The unpopular English Catholic Queen, Mary Tudor died in 1558 after a brief reign during which she earned the epithet ‘Bloody Mary’ for her persecution of Protestants. Mary’s Protestant younger sister succeeded her as Queen Elizabeth I. In 1559, during the first year of Elizabeth’s reign, Parliament passed the Act of Uniformity, declaring the state-run Church of England as the only legitimate religious authority, and compulsory for all citizens. -

THE SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD (A) 5TH JANUARY 2020 The sight of the star filled them with delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh (Matthew 2, 10-11). THE GOSPELS we shall hear at Sunday Masses this year will be mostly taken from St Matthew. Matthew seems to be writing for converts from Judaism and so, unlike Mark, he does not explain Jewish customs and names. He often quotes from the Old Testament to demonstrate how it has been fulfilled in the life and actions of Jesus. He presents Je- sus in terms of the heroes of Judaism; the angel tells Joseph he must adopt Jesus as son of David, and Jesus relives and fulfils the life of Moses. Like Moses, Jesus is driven into exile by a wicked ruler; like Moses he is taken up onto a high mountain to see the kingdoms of this world, and, like Moses, he imparts a new holy Law from a mountain. And yet it is more important to notice the differences, the ways in which Jesus surpasses Moses. His disciples call Jesus ‘Lord’, not St Matthew, Book of Kells, 9th ‘Rabbi’; only Judas calls Jesus ‘Rabbi’, when he betrays him with century his kiss. When he walks on the water, when Peter calls him the Son of the living God at Caesarea Philippi (16, 16) and when they fall down and worship him (14,33), Jesus’ disciples recognise his divinity even before the resurrection. -

For Sadie and Lilly Summary This subject of this thesis is the artistic patronage of Pope Gregory XIII (1572-1585). It examines the contribution of the individual patron to his patronage with a view to providing a more intense reading of his artistic programmes. This approach is derived from the individual interests, influences, and ambitions of Gregory XIII. It contrasts with periodization approaches that employ ‘Counter Reformation’ ideas to interpret his patronage. This thesis uses archival materials, contemporaneous primary sources, modern specialist literature, and multi-disciplinary sources in combination with a visual and iconographic analysis of Gregory XIII’s artistic programmes to develop and understanding of its subject. Chapter one examines the efficacy and impact of employing a ‘Counter-Reformation’ approach to interpret Gregory XIII’s artistic patronage. It finds this approach to be too general, ill defined, and reductionist to provide an intense reading of his artistic programmes. Chapter two explores the antecedent influences that determined Gregory XIII’s approach to his papal patronage and an overview of this patronage. -

Book 2, chapter 32 Of the Life, Imprisonment, and Martyrdom of Father Edmund Campion of the Society of Jesus1 Among those jailed were many of the priests who (as we have said) circulated through the kingdom, encouraging the Catholics, strengthening the weak, il- luminating the blind, and reconciling the converted to the Catholic Church. These men were afflicted with harsh prisons and abuses of every kind, con- sumed and dispatched with ghastly deaths. Here I will say something about these illustrious martyrs out of all that has been printed in various books. But whereas the foremost of these, the general and captain of all those who in recent years have died in Elizabeth’s England for the faith of Jesus Christ, has been Father Edmund Campion of the Society of Jesus, in this chapter I will speak at greater length about his life and martyrdom—and in what follows we shall touch upon something of the rest. Father Campion was born in London, the capital of England. After the first years of childhood, he entered St John’s College, Oxford, where, on account of his singular brilliance and amiable disposition, he was well loved by the found- er, Thomas White [Bukito], in whose memory he delivered an elegant and eloquent Latin oration.2 Having completed the course of grades, ranks, and offices that are customarily given to students of his caliber in that university, his friends and confidants, who wished to see him successful and honored, per- suaded him to be ordained a deacon, so that he might ascend to the pulpit and preach—though he was never attracted to the errors of our times. -

Carolyn Vinnicombe Recusancy and Regicide: The Flawed Strategy of the Jesuit Mission in Elizabethan England In pursuing their goals of reviving the religious zeal of the English Catholic community by converting them to religious opposition in the later sixteenth and earlier seventeenth centuries, the drivers of the Jesuit mission in England, under the guidance of the Jesuit Robert Persons, failed. They did so not because Catholic doctrine lacked appeal in protestant Elizabethan England, but because their conversion strategy was wholly unsuited to the political realities of the times. Instead, the aggregate efects of the Church’s clerical infighting over the issues of conformity and disputation as a conversion device, failure to understand the practical needs of the average Catholic, and Person’s ill-fated political plotting polarized the English against the Jesuits and created a religious and political environment so toxic that it cannibalized the mission’s own conversion eforts. Though the Jesuits saw later success with the publication of their non-polemic spiritual texts, they never succeeded in gaining back the ground they lost as a result of their catastrophic early strategy. I The issue of conformity to the Elizabethan Settlement of 1569 presented a dilemma without an absolute solution for the English Catholic community. When Pope Pius V’s Regans in Excelsis of 1570, excommunicated the queen, and prompted her regime to mandate attendance at protestant services, it left English Catholics floundering to find traction on the plane of religious devotion. Could they still call themselves Catholics if they yielded to the state and attended protestant services, but maintained Catholicism in their hearts, or were only those who defied the state and refused to attend services worthy of the “Catholic” label and, indeed, salvation? This was a question for which neither the laity nor the Church had a clear answer. -
Old Testament Adaptation in the Stonyhurst Pageants

Case Tompkins Old Testament Adaptation in The Stonyhurst Pageants This article examines the relationship between the Douay-Rheims translation of the bible and The Stonyhurst Pageants preserved at Stonyhurst College in northern Lancashire. Going beyond Carleton Brown’s recognition of that rela- tionship in his 1920 publication of the pageants, it details the ways in which the Stonyhurst playwright adapted the biblical text by combining scriptural verse and critical apparatus, thus demonstrating the playwright’s consummate familiarity with his source and his skill in adapting it to serve his needs. Additionally, the close relationship between biblical translation and pageant text connects The Stony- hurst Pageants with the concerns of English Catholics in the seventeenth century rather than with the suppressed religious play-cycles of Henrician and Elizabethan England. What little scholarship exists on The Stonyhurst Pageants identifies them as an incomplete cycle of thirteen biblical plays comprising some 8740 lines. The single manuscript that preserves the pageants — MS. A. VI. 33 — is held, where it was discovered, in the library of Stonyhurst College, Lanca- shire. Despite their name, the pageants bear little resemblance to the biblical plays surviving from elsewhere in England. Where the cycles from York and Chester cover the very basics of the Pentateuch before moving on to the New Testament, all of the surviving Stonyhurst Pageants tell Old Testament stories and most of these come from Joshua, Judges, and the other books of Jew- ish history skipped in the drive towards the Incarnation.1 As the text now stands, the pageants are: 6. -

This recounted what is known of Blessed Richard Sargeant, John Sandys, Stephen Rowsham, William Lampley and Henry Webley. The booklet was republished in 2005. Journal No 53 of the Gloucestershire Catholic History Society, published in October 2010, reproduced the original 1987 booklet with the addition of articles by Michael Bergen on Blessed Thomas Alfield and the Venerable Thomas Webley. Thank you to Debbie Cottam who in 2013 re-typed the original text. 1 Statutes under which the martyrs were charged The Statute of Treasons of 1351 (Edward III Stat.5, Cap.2) The basic treason law of England. Compassing or attempting the death of the King, or his heirs, is high treason according to this law. Act to retain the Queen’s Majesty’s subject in due obedience (23 Eliz. I. Cap.1. 1581) This Act made it high treason to reconcile or be reconciled to the Catholic Church or to induce others to be so reconciled, (persuading to popery). Act against Jesuits, seminary priests and other such like disobedient persons (27 Eliz. I. Cap.2 1585) This act made it high treason for a Catholic priest ordained abroad to come into or remain in the realm after 24th June 1559. It made it felony for anyone to harbour or assist him. The sentence for a priest was that he should be hanged, drawn and quartered, for a layman that he should be hanged. -
