It was one of the few airports to maintain civil flights to Lisbon and Shannon during World War II. A section of the runway remains on the site today. Following its closure in 1957, the airfield was re-opened in 1959 as Whitchurch Circuit, a car racing circuit holding Formula Two and Formula Three races. By 2012 the first phase of significant new development had been completed at Hengrove Park. Focusing on providing new community facilities, the site is now served by Hengrove Leisure Centre, South Bristol Community Hospital and South Bristol Skills Academy. panoramic view looking north towards the Hengrove Park Leisure Centre launching the Bristol Cardiff route (1932) aerial view of the airfield (1930) Fry’s Mount Everest consignment (1932) panoramic view of Hengrove Park looking southeast Gypsy Moth aircraft (1932) BOAC at Whitchurch (1941) Whitchurch Airfield Show (1931) Whitchurch Circuit Soapbox Race (1959) panoramic view of the Hartcliffe Campus site looking south Image source 01.
