Nat. Croat. Vol. 27, No. 2, 407- 420*, 2018, Zagreb. In this paper, the plant lists of glasshouse succulents grown in the Botanical Garden from 1895 to 2017 are studied. Synonymy, nomenclature and origin of plant material were sorted. The lists of species grown in the last 122 years are constructed in such a way as to show that throughout that period at least 1423 taxa of succulent plants from 254 genera and 17 families inhabited the Garden’s cold glass- house collection. (Asteraceae) Alfred Maroyi Medicinal Plants and Economic Development (MPED) Research Centre, Department of Botany, University of Fort Hare, Private Bag X1314, Alice 5700, South Africa Abstract Berkheya setifera is a well-known plant species in southern Africa in traditional and folk medicine. This study is aimed at providing a critical review of the botany, biological activities and medicinal uses of B. setifera. Documented information on botany, biological activities and medicinal uses of B. setifera was collected from several online sources which included BMC, Scopus, SciFinder, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Elsevier, Pubmed and Web of Science. Additional information on the botany, biological activities and medicinal uses of B. setifera was sourced from book chapters, books, journal articles, theses and scientific publications sourced from the University of Fort Hare library. The current study showed that the leaves and roots of B. setifera are traditionally used in 60% of the countries where the species is indigenous. Berkheya setifera is used as herbal medicine for 28 human diseases which include abdominal pains, arthritis, blood circulatory problems, colds, coughs, itching skin and rash, jaundice, kidney problems, magical uses, stomach complaints, sterility and uterine disorders. Pharmacological research revealed that B. setifera extracts have antibacterial, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, haemolysis, antifungal and cytotoxicity properties. Future studies should concentrate on assessing the phytochemical, pharmacological and toxicological activities of B. setifera crude extracts as well as chemical ingredients isolated from the species. -

[email protected]; ster- ling@hawaii. edu Compositae (Asteraceae) are the largest flowering plant family (23,000 to 30,000 species) and its members are found throughout the world in both temperate and tropical habitats. The subfamilies and tribes of Compositae remained relatively constant for many years; recent molecular studies, however, have identified new subfa- milial groups and identified previously unknown relationships. Currently there are 35 tribes and 10 subfami- lies (Baldwin & al., 2002; Panero & Funk, 2002). Some of the tribes and subfamilies have not been tested for monophyly and without a clear understanding of the major genera that form each tribe and subfamily, an accu- rate phylogeny for the family cannot be reconstructed. The tribe Arctoteae (African daisies) is a diverse and interesting group with a primarily southern African distribution (ca. 17 genera, 220 species). They are espe- cially important in that most of the species are found in the Cape Floral Kingdom, the smallest floral kingdom and the subject of intense conservation interest. Arctoteae are part of the monophyletic subfamily Cichorioideae s.s. Other tribes in the subfamily include Eremothamneae, Gundelieae, Lactuceae, Liabeae, Moquineae, and Vernonieae, and these were all evaluated as potential outgroups. -

FAUNA & FLORA SPECIALIST IMPACT ASSESSMENT: NUWEVELD WEST WIND ENERGY FACILITY PRODUCED FOR AURECON First Draft April 2020 Revised October 2020 [email protected] EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Red Cap Energy Pty Ltd (Red Cap) is proposing to develop three wind farms on a 35,000ha site situated about ~65km north of Beaufort West along the R381 to Loxton, in the Beaufort West Local Municipality, Central Karoo District Municipality, Western Cape. Aurecon South Africa are conducting the required EIA process and 3Foxes Biodiversity Solutions has been appointed to provide a specialist terrestrial fauna and flora specialist study of the proposed three wind farms as part of the EIA applications, one of them being the Nuweveld West Wind Farm which this study deals with. The purpose of the Nuweveld West Terrestrial Biodiversity Report is to describe and detail the ecological features of the proposed site; provide an assessment of the ecological sensitivity of the affected area and identify the likely impacts that may be associated with the development of a wind farm on the site. Several site visits as well as a desktop review of the available ecological information for the area was conducted in order to identify and characterise the ecological features of the site. Overall, the Nuweveld West site is considered generally favourable for development of the wind farm. Although there are some constrained areas where development should be minimised, there are large tracts of the site that are considered medium or low sensitivity and where development would have a low impact. Although impacts on the Riverine Rabbit are a potential concern, its presence on the escarpment is unlikely and the total extent of available habitat is low.
