Instrumentality: The Core Meaning of the Coverb Yi 以 in Classical Chinese Sue-mei Wu 吳素美 Carnegie Mellon University Yi 以 is one of the most important and commonly used function words in Classical Chinese, and many researchers (e.g. Hsueh 1997, Pulleyblank 1995, Sun 1991, Wu 1994 and Wu 1997) have contributed to the discussion on yi's meanings and functions. The main issues in the current understanding of yi include its verb and coverb usages. Both usages have been thought to exhibit a range of meanings, and yi has been thought to be able to occur flexibly either before or after a verb phrase. In addition, yi is also thought to be a conjunction indicating the reason, purpose or result of an action. This study proposes that the verb yi fundamentally indicates instrumentality, and that the coverb yi, which is derived from the verb yi, still retains that fundamental notion of instrumentality. The notion of instrumentality has been extended in yi's coverb usage to indicate the means or reason by which an action occurs, or the time which an action occurs. Moreover, I will also argue that the yi phrase, when it occurs before a verb phrase, functions syntactically as a modifier to the verb phrase. When the yi phrase occurs after another verb phrase, however, the semantic emphasis has been deliberately put on the yi phrase, which then serves as the nucleus of the predicate. -

Introduction It is widely believed that Japanese is a language which exhibits virtually no agreement phenomenon at all. Yet, there is a single pair of verbs which alternate depending on the property of their nominative phrases: The locational verbs aru (inanimate) and iru (animate) agree in animacy with their nominative phrases, as illustrated in (1). (1) a. Kooen‐ni kodomo‐ga / * isi‐ga iru. park‐DAT child‐NOM stone‐NOM be‐AN(IMATE) ‘The child/The stone is in the park.’ b. Kooen‐ni * kodomo‐ga / isi‐ga aru. park‐DAT child‐NOM stone‐NOM be‐IN(ANIMATE) ‘The child/The stone is in the park.’ In this study, I investigate whether young Japanese‐learning children are sensitive to this pattern of animacy alternation. The results of my transcript analysis demonstrate that children exhibit correct animacy agreement from the earliest observable stages. This finding suggests that very early acquisition of agreement, observed in a variety of “rich” agreement languages, holds even for the acquisition of agreement in Japanese, which is a language with extremely poor agreement. 2. The Syntax of Animacy Agreement in Japanese 2.1. Major Properties of Animacy Agreement in Japanese In Japanese, the locatinal verbs aru (inanimate) and iru (animate) are the only pair of verbs which alternate depending on the animacy classification of their nominative phrases. Michael, Chair In this dissertation a methodology for identifying and analyzing serial verb constructions (SVCs) is developed, and its application is exemplified through an analysis of SVCs in Koro, an Oceanic language of Papua New Guinea. SVCs involve two main verbs that form a single predicate and share at least one of their arguments. In addition, they have shared values for tense, aspect, and mood, and they denote a single event. The unique syntactic and semantic properties of SVCs present a number of theoretical challenges, and thus they have invited great interest from syntacticians and typologists alike. But characterizing the nature of SVCs and making generalizations about the typology of serializing languages has proven difficult. There is still debate about both the surface properties of SVCs and their underlying syntactic structure. The current work addresses some of these issues by approaching serialization from two angles: the typological and the language-specific. On the typological front, it refines the definition of ‘SVC’ and develops a principled set of cross-linguistically applicable diagnostics. -

In descriptive works, AM markers are often referred to by other labels, such as movement grams, distal aspects, directional markers, or itive/ventive markers. Chinese: Parts of Speech Candice Chi-Hang Cheung 1. Introduction Whether Chinese has the same parts of speech (or categories) as the Indo-European languages has been the subject of much debate. In particular, while it is generally recognized that Chinese makes a distinction between nouns and verbs, scholars’ opinions differ on the rest of the categories (see Chao 1968, Li and Thompson 1981, Zhu 1982, Xing and Ma 1992, inter alia). These differences in opinion are due partly to the scholars’ different theoretical backgrounds and partly to the use of different terminological conventions. As a result, scholars use different criteria for classifying words and different terminological conventions for labeling the categories. To address the question of whether Chinese possesses the same categories as the Indo-European languages, I will make reference to the familiar categories of the Indo-European languages whenever possible. In this chapter, I offer a comprehensive survey of the major categories in Chinese, aiming to establish the set of categories that are found both in Chinese and in the Indo-European languages, and those that are found only in Chinese. In particular, I examine the characteristic features of the major categories in Chinese and discuss in what ways they are similar to and different from the major categories in the Indo-European languages. Furthermore, I review the factors that contribute to the long-standing debate over the categorial status of adjectives, prepositions and localizers in Chinese. 2. Categories found both in Chinese and in the Indo-European languages This section introduces the categories that are found both in Chinese and in the Indo-European languages: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. -

Languages of the Middle Andes in areal-typological perspective: Emphasis on Quechuan and Aymaran Willem F.H. Adelaar 1. Introduction1 Among the indigenous languages of the Andean region of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, Quechuan and Aymaran have traditionally occupied a dominant position. Both Quechuan and Aymaran are language families of several million speakers each. Quechuan consists of a conglomerate of geo- graphically defined varieties, traditionally referred to as Quechua “dialects”, not- withstanding the fact that mutual intelligibility is often lacking. Present-day Ayma- ran consists of two distinct languages that are not normally referred to as “dialects”. The absence of a demonstrable genetic relationship between the Quechuan and Aymaran language families, accompanied by a lack of recognizable external gen- etic connections, suggests a long period of independent development, which may hark back to a period of incipient subsistence agriculture roughly dated between 8000 and 5000 BP (Torero 2002: 123–124), long before the Andean civilization at- tained its highest stages of complexity. Quechuan and Aymaran feature a great amount of detailed structural, phono- logical and lexical similarities and thus exemplify one of the most intriguing and intense cases of language contact to be found in the entire world. Often treated as a product of long-term convergence, the similarities between the Quechuan and Ay- maran families can best be understood as the result of an intense period of social and cultural intertwinement, which must have pre-dated the stage of the proto-lan- guages and was in turn followed by a protracted process of incidental and locally confined diffusion.
