  • The Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale Will Take Place This
The Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale will take place this year alongside racing on the Friday of the Cheltenham International Meeting and incorporates the NH Breeze Up. The sale will take place an hour after racing in the Tattersalls Sales arena. Catering is available on site in the Tattersalls marquee and hospitality is available to clients in the Tattersalls Sales arena. The Breeze Up will be restricted approximately 30 horses with the breeze itself taking place before racing on the morning of the December Sale. The breeze up will be recorded and available online to view and clients will be able to attend and view the breeze live prior to racing. The highest price paid for a breeze up horse in 2017 was £115,000 when Neil Mulholland signed for a Germany filly from the family of Supreme Prince & Supreme Serenade consigned by Meadowview Stables. Tiger Roll winner of the 2018 Grand National for Gordon Elliott and Gigginstown House Stud is a graduate of the December Sale having been sold for £80,000 by Nigel Hawke at the 2013 renewal to the owners Gigginstown. The 2017 Grand National winner One For Arthur is a graduate of the 2013 December Sale selling to Tom Malone for £60,000 produced and sold by Liam Kenny's Ballydarragh Stables. Dual Grade 1 winning mare Fayonagh was a graduate of the 2016 Cheltenham December Sale selling to Maura Gittins for £64,000. Poetic Rhythm winner of the Grade 1 2018 Challow Hurdle was sold at the 2015 renewal of the December Sale to Chris Coley by Knockanglass Stables for £35,000.

All rights reserved . 1 | P a g e 2016 Grand National Tips Spring got off to a great start with an early Easter and brighter evenings and it also means it’s time for QED’s Grand National tips! For those of you in a hurry, my tips are at the end of this article. Disclaimer - I have not enjoyed great Grand National success over the years, but that won't stop me from sharing my tips and tactics with you. But, before we get into the euphoria of all that, you would be disappointed if I did not throw in a few ‘risk warnings’: Risk warnings Tipping horses is not an activity regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Betting on a horse is a gamble not an investment. A bit like high tech stocks on P/E ratios of 200 plus in 2000. I have no qualifications or expertise in horse racing and my past performance is no indication of future performance (which is a good thing?). What goes up might come down and not get up again. Especially over Becher’s Brook. Only bet for fun and with an amount you would be happy to lose. If you want decent long term returns send your money to QED not Ladbrokes. Your relationship might be at risk if you don’t place your partner’s (or boss’!) winning bet. A word on Efficient Markets … In an efficient market the price contains all the known information. If new information arrives it can change the price.

Horse Racing Awareness Week 2012 S C I P M E Instead of betting © on the cruel Grand National... ... why not help us to fund care and shelter for rescued horses? Tyneandthyneagain running loose moments before his death in the Grand National Rescued horses and p www.stopkillinghorses.com onies enjoying life at Hope Pastures Jason Maguire, whip in hand, after thrashing Ballabriggs to the finishing line in the 2011 Grand National Same old story There was, however, nothing unique about the 2011 race. Since 2000, 20 horses have died on the Grand National course, with others badly injured. The basic problem is that the course is too long and too gruelling. Thirty punishing fences have to be jumped over an extreme distance of four and a half miles, making it the longest race in world Thoroughbred National Hunt racing. Despite modifications to the course, more horses have been killed in the past decade than ever before. The usual excuse! Defenders of the Grand National – and racing in general – often argue that ‘if the horses didn’t like it, they wouldn’t carry on running after their jockeys fall off’. Yet horses sometimes try to continue running when they are clearly injured – even after a heavy fall and with a broken leg. They don’t do so for pleasure! Horses are herd animals. They feel safer when part of a group, especially in the noisy, often unfamiliar race-day environment. ember 2011? Changing the Aintree course –a Rem feeble package of ‘reforms’ Following the public outcry over last year’s race, the British The 2011 Grand National brought home to the public as Horseracing Authority (BHA) has introduced a new round of never before that the race is – as Animal Aid Director ‘improvements’ to the course, heralded by the industry as Andrew Tyler told the media – ‘straightforward animal an answer to previous welfare problems.

  • Henry Purcell - Priston's Peppermint Horse!
Henry Purcell - Priston's Peppermint Horse! On 2nd January 1957 a complete outsider battled up Cheltenham’s awesome hill, passed the fancied Polonius after the last jump, and outstayed all his rivals to win the 4-mile Fred Withington Handicap Chase by 2 lengths. His price was 25-1 with the bookmakers, and a staggering 116-1 on the Tote. The horse’s name was Henry Purcell, and he was owned and trained by Mr E C Smith for his wife Carmen at Church Farm, Priston. The win was all the more amazing because ‘Henry’ had recently jumped so badly that his owners had decided to pay the forfeit and withdraw him from the Fred Withington. But they’d left it too late, and the horse had to run. They hadn’t even got a jockey for him, and at short notice were lucky to find Ray Richards, a local farmer’s son who had just turned professional. The Sporting Life of 3 January said “Henry Purcell had won a 3-mile chase at Taunton early in November …. but he had failed completely in his 3 subsequent races, and the measure of confidence reposed in this 25-1 chance can be gauged by the fact that Mr E C Smith, who trains him ….. did not attend to see him run.” By winning the Fred Withington ‘Henry’ automatically qualified for that year’s Grand National, but the press, and his owners, were all emphatically and equally dismissive: “Asked if Henry Purcell had been entered for the Grand National Mr Chivers, who was deputising for the trainer, replied: “Good gracious, no.
