Shaw III and Mrs. James B. Watriss. John K. Shaw III Mr. John K. Shaw III passed away on June 26, 2020, at his home in Glyndon at the age of 75. A sportsman through and through, John was a lifelong Race Committee member of the Grand National Steeplechase, and a supporter of steeplechase horse racing, fox hunting, land conservation, and outdoor pursuits. John served as Secretary of the Green Spring Valley Hounds, and also helped craft the 1979-1980 English Grand National campaigns for steeplechase great, Ben Nevis II, owned by his godfather, Mr. Redmond C. Stewart. Ben Nevis II won the English Grand National in 1980, as well as the Maryland Hunt Cup and Grand National Steeplechase in 1977-1978. John is survived by his wife, Mrs. Fredericka Savage Shaw. The Grand National Challenge Cup will be run in John’s memory until its retirement. Mrs. James B. Watriss Mrs. James B. Watriss, known as Minnie to friends, passed away on December 18, 2020, at the age of 89. Minnie was a resident of Butler, and a generous Grand National landowner whose home, Warburton, overlooks the east side of the racecourse, including fences one, two, fourteen, and fifteen. Minnie was known for her love of beauty and color, especially for two of her passions, painting and gardening. A patron of steeplechase racing and an accomplished fox hunter, Minnie hosted a luncheon each Grand National day. She was also a partner in Arcadia Stables, which won the Grand National in 2007 with Bubble Economy. • • Program for the first running of the Grand National Steeplechase on Friday, May 12, 1898. But if the Hunt Cup is the most demanding timber race, the Grand National is the most demanding three-mile timber race – a critical difference, as the shorter distance means faster racing over eighteen unyielding Collection/Maryland Horse Library Peter Winants obstacles.
