The Madelung rule is used to generate an unusual format for the periodic table. Following the uork of Byakov< Kulakov. Rumer and Fet. such a format is further refined on the basis of a chain of groups starting with SU(2)xS0(4.2). HISTORICAL FACETS The list of chemical elements has not stopped to grow during the last two centuries.
