Ainsi, une descente sur terrain a été entreprise dans l’Aire Protégée Complexe Tsimembo Manambolomaty, district d’Antsalova, du mois d’août au mois de septembre 2016 afin de capturer les chauves-souris à l’aide des filets japonais. Au total, 80 individus rassemblés dans neuf espèces ont été capturés dont 51 individus de T. mauritianus. Une espèce de chauve-souris frugivore, Pteropus rufus, a été observée pendant le vol et l’alimentation sur Ziziphus zizyphus et sur Cocos nucifera. Trois espèces (Hypsugo bemainty, Miniopterus griveaudi et Triaenops menamena) sont nouvellement répertoriées dans l’Aire Protégée. Ce qui donne 12 espèces actuellement recensées dans l’AP Complexe Tsimembo- Manambolomaty. Le calcul du sex-ratio a indiqué la prépondérance des femelles sur l’ensemble des populations de T. mauritianus capturés. D’après nos résultats, la période de reproduction des individus se passe pendant la saison sèche de l’année. Taphozous mauritianus utilise C. nucifera et rarement Tamarindus indica comme gîte diurne au niveau des zones de plantations et du village. Le régime alimentaire est surtout à base d’insectes avec une dominance des Hymenoptera chez les adultes et des Lepidoptera chez les juvéniles. Taphozous mauritianus est parasité par Tripselia blainvillii (Nycteribiidae) avec une charge parasitaire de 157 ectoparasites collectés sur 46 individus. La charge parasitaire chez les hôtes mâles (n = 3,45) est plus élevée que chez les hôtes femelles (n = 3,13). Davantage de recherches permettrait de recueillir des bases de données supplémentaires et plus solides pour la conservation des espèces de chauves-souris à Madagascar. Mots clés : Taphozous mauritianus, biologie, régime alimentaire, habitat, ectoparasites, Complexe Tsimembo Manambolomaty, Melaky, Madagascar. 3 ABSTRACT The present study aims to obtain additional information on the biology, ecology and ectoparasites of Taphozous mauritianus (Emballonuridae : Chiroptera) for a better conservation of the species. Fieldwork was undertaken in the Tsimembo Manambolomaty Complex Protected Area, Antsalova district, between August and September 2016 to capture bats by using mist nets. A total of 80 individuals belonging to nine bats species were captured, including 51 individuals of T. mauritianus. One species, Pteropus rufus, was observed in flight and feeding on Ziziphus zizyphus and Cocos nucifera. Hypsugo bemainty, Miniopterus griveaudi and Triaenops menamena are newly listed in the Protected Areas. The sex-ratio indicated the preponderance of females on the whole population of T. mauritianus. The breeding period of individuals occurs during the dry season of the year. The species studied uses C. nucifera and rarely Tamarindus indica as day roost sites in plantations and villages. The diet is mainly based on insects with a preference for Hymenoptera in adults and Lepidoptera in juveniles. Taphozous mauritianus is parasitized by Tripselia blainvillii (Nycteribiidae) with a parasitic load of 157 ectoparasites on 46 hosts. The parasitic load in male hosts (n = 3,45) is higher than in female hosts (n = 3,13). Further research would be necessary to provide additional databases for the conservation of bat species occurring on Madagascar.     NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia Bats and fruit bats at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve Ingrid Kaipf, Hartmut Rudolphi and Holger Meinig 206 BATS Highlights ´ This is the first time a systematic bat assessment has been conducted in the Kafa BR. ´ We recorded four fruit bat species, one of which is new for the Kafa BR but not for Ethiopia. ´ We recorded 29 bat species by capture or sound recording. Four bat species are new for the Kafa BR but occur in other parts of Ethiopia. ´ We recorded calls of a new species in the horseshoe bat family for Ethiopia via echolocation. This data needs to be confirmed by capture, because there is a chance it could be a species of Rhinolophus new to science. ´ We suggest two flagship species: the long-haired rousette for the bamboo forest and the hammer-headed fruit bat for the Alemgono Wetland and Gummi River. ´ The bamboo forests had the most bat activity at night, but the Gojeb Wetland had the highest species richness due to its highly diverse habitats. ´ All caves throughout the entire Kafa BR should be protected as bat roosts. ´ It will be necessary to develop an old tree management concept for the biosphere reserve to protect and increase tree roosts for bats. 207 NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia 1.     UGANDA 2021 Participants- Tania Fabrega and Carlos Bocos Uganda has been on my radar for a long time and this year, regarding the circumstances and specially after read Tomer’s trip report, Tania and myself decided to book a trip using the same ground agent, Harrier Tours. We were basically following Tomer’s footprints although we had less freedom to roam around, due some very last-minute regulations like selective lockdowns, curfews, some issues by the DRC border and many more. Nevertheless, we had a great time and was great to be away again, after all the covid madness that we all have suffered from months to end. This was not an exclusively mammalwatching trip because we also targeted a number of selected birds, had a lot of fun herping around and few nights with more booze than the one i can remember As we basically visited the same places than Tomer and Alex did, I don’t describe the places visited. But here there is a commented list of the observed species Straw-coloured Fruit Bat (Eidolon helvum)- few of them feeding on a fruiting tree, near the Female Hotsprings, Semliki Hammer-headed Fruit Bat (Hypsignathus monstruosus)- few in flight all too brief in Semliki and then awesome views of this great bats at Bigodi, Kibale. Hammer-headed Fruit Bat and Franquet’s Fruit Bat Franquet’s Fruit Bat (Epomops franqueti)- regarding the difficulties to separate Epomops from Epomophorus, the only certain ones we saw were at Semliki, where the CDC guys were mistnetting bats and studying them in hand.

Abstract: The natural colonisation of many remote oceanic islands by bats, including those of the western Indian Ocean, has been facilitated by their unique capability among mammals for powered flight. In the western Indian Ocean region, only the Malagasy islands of Madagascar and the Comoros archipelago have been naturally colonised by non-volant mammals. Despite their greater potential for inter-island dispersal, and thus gene transfer, endemicity of Chiroptera in the western Indian Ocean islands is high. Given their vulnerability to stochastic and anthropogenic disturbances, greater focus needs to be placed on investigating the demographic and ecological history of bats on Western Indian Ocean islands to safeguard not only their future, but also the ecosystem functioning on these islands, for which they are undoubtedly such an integral part. Here, I summarise the taxonomic and life history information available on bats from Western Indian Ocean islands and highlight knowledge gaps and conservation issues that threaten the continued persistence of some species.

Berenty Reserve is a small reserve (about 250 ha) that contains gallery forest, scrub forest, and spiny forest. In spite of the reserve’s small size, it has the largest remaining gallery forest in the region. Based on a review of previous reports and our observations, we created a list of forest vertebrate species recorded in the reserve: 27 mammals, 106 birds, 46 reptiles, and 6 amphibians. This result suggests that the forests of Berenty Reserve have relatively high vertebrate diversity for their size. On the other hand, we confirmed the absence of some vertebrate species (e.g., fossa), suggesting that the forest is too small to hold large carnivores.
