One of the most important figures that resulted from this reform is that of the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland (PONI), undoubtedly the most modern and powerful police external oversight mechanism in the world and a mandatory reference for any scholar or specialist interested in police accountability. Here is a data sheet with the most important aspects of this mechanism. Corporate Governance . The Police Ombudsman is appointed by Her Majesty, as a named person for a fixed term of seven years. His Office has 150 staff and an annual operating budget of around 9 million pounds . The Office of the Police Ombudsman is situated in Belfast and provides a continuous service 24 hours a day to the people and police of Northern Ireland. The Police Ombudsman is accountable to the Northern Ireland Assembly, through the Minister for Justice. The status of the Office of the Police Ombudsman is that of a non-departmental public body (NDPB) administrated through the Department of Justice. The Office does not carry out its functions on behalf of the Crown. The Police Ombudsman also investigates complaints against the Belfast Harbour Police, Larne Harbour Police, the Belfast International Airport Police and Ministry of Defence Police in Northern Ireland and the Serious Organised Crime Agency when its staff operates in this jurisdiction.
