By Anthony Yung ArtReview Asia caught up with Lee Kit in Venice, where he was monitoring the reconstruction of a building – soon to be the site of the Hong Kong Pavilion – opposite the entrance of the Arsenale. His solo exhibition You (you). will open here in less than two months. During the past year, Lee’s experiences of participating in art fairs and exhibitions all over the world – from solo shows in Beijing, Hong Kong, Palermo and Tapei, to group shows at the New Museum and MoMA in New York – have transformed his work methods and expanded the dimensions of his creative practice. Oddly enough, shortly before being invited to represent Hong Kong at the Venice Biennale, he moved to Taipei; so we decided, under the circumstances, that the best approach would be to invite one of his old Hong Kong friends to catch up with him on recent events. Lee’s artistic journey began when he started by painting checked patterns onto cloths, then using these ‘paintings’ in his daily life as tablecloths, curtains or picnic sheets. He washed the cloths, he wiped his mouth with them and in 2004 he used one of them as a ‘flag’ in Hong Kong’s annual 1 July protests (held each year since the 1997 handover, in recent years to symbolise a demand for general freedoms). -
Hipster Black Metal?
Hipster Black Metal? Deafheaven’s Sunbather and the Evolution of an (Un) popular Genre Paola Ferrero A couple of months ago a guy walks into a bar in Brooklyn and strikes up a conversation with the bartenders about heavy metal. The guy happens to mention that Deafheaven, an up-and-coming American black metal (BM) band, is going to perform at Saint Vitus, the local metal concert venue, in a couple of weeks. The bartenders immediately become confrontational, denying Deafheaven the BM ‘label of authenticity’: the band, according to them, plays ‘hipster metal’ and their singer, George Clarke, clearly sports a hipster hairstyle. Good thing they probably did not know who they were talking to: the ‘guy’ in our story is, in fact, Jonah Bayer, a contributor to Noisey, the music magazine of Vice, considered to be one of the bastions of hipster online culture. The product of that conversation, a piece entitled ‘Why are black metal fans such elitist assholes?’ was almost certainly intended as a humorous nod to the ongoing debate, generated mainly by music webzines and their readers, over Deafheaven’s inclusion in the BM canon. The article features a promo picture of the band, two young, clean- shaven guys, wearing indistinct clothing, with short haircuts and mild, neutral facial expressions, their faces made to look like they were ironically wearing black and white make up, the typical ‘corpse-paint’ of traditional, early BM. It certainly did not help that Bayer also included a picture of Inquisition, a historical BM band from Colombia formed in the early 1990s, and ridiculed their corpse-paint and black cloaks attire with the following caption: ‘Here’s what you’re defending, black metal purists. -

Lush: Shoegaze, Blind Spot and Reunions
Lush: Shoegaze, Blind Spot and Reunions theskinny.co.uk /music/interviews/lush-interview Lush Editor's Choice "You know, I hate the term shoegazing." Emma Anderson laughs but she's frustrated rather than amused as she reflects on the continuing and uncomfortable packaging of the scene her band Lush helped kick-start a mere quarter century ago. That time might have flown but the lazy compartmentalising has remained. "The scene was ridiculed to some extent," she continues, "but if you go back to the 90s, a lot of stuff hasn’t stood the test of time very well at all, and I can see why this has. It has a slightly other-worldly quality, I guess. It's very musical. That might sound really silly but it's not lyric-driven, it's certainly not scene-driven. It's based in music and genuine, real emotion." Hear hear. And her band's lasting qualities go some considerable way towards explaining why their unexpected regrouping late last year was greeted with such immediate warmth. With the likes of Ride and Slowdive's returns leading to a thoughtful re-evaluation of their back catalogues, Lush begin again with their credibility secure, despite elements of a largely supportive press at the time throwing them the odd bitchy barb. As we talk by phone ahead of the band's first release in 20 years – the tremendous Blind Spot EP – and a run of live shows that include two headline performances at London's vast Roundhouse, Anderson recalls those slyly negative notices with bemusement. "This has come up quite a lot actually," she says. -

Commercial Alternative
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Birkbeck Institutional Research Online Commercial Alternative Joseph Brooker – Slow down / You’re taking me over… 1 – Another victory like that and we are done for.2 By the end of the 1980s, popular culture and media commentary brimmed with a self-conscious desire to name and describe the present. Few decades have had as clear an account of themselves as the 1980s, whatever the gaps and limits of that account. The 1990s became ever more sure of what had happened in the 1980s; but packing the 1990s themselves into a compelling summary proved more difficult. For the time being, those looking for stories of the last decade must make do with tracts like Stephen Bayley’s Labour Camp, a brief, bilious assault on the aesthetics and politics of Blair’s first term. For all his rancour, snobbery and carelessness, Bayley lands a few hits, and leaves a few hints. Bayley reads New Labour in terms not of social and economic policy, but of taste and image: Blair’s choice of car, the efforts at ‘rebranding Britain’, the design of the Dome. The cultural emblem of the Blair years, he proposes, is Elton John: He is a popular phenomenon, therefore it is irrelevant and elitist even to wonder if he is actually any good. He is emphatically middle-of-the-road. He is classless.... After a much-reported past of rock-star excess, he is clean, dried out…. Whoever would have thought you could relaunch old Labour? Whoever would have thought you could relaunch Elton John? The parallels between the two transformations are remarkable.3 The thought is suggestive, but leaves much unsaid about the new terrain inherited and shaped by the Blair government. -
