ARCTIC VOL. 45, NO. 2 (JUNE 1992) P. 138-144 Anvil Boulders and Lithic Reduction on Southern Victoria Island, Northwest Territories JACK BRINK’ (Received II December 1990; accepted in revised form I5 August 1991) ABSTRACT. This paper reports on an unusual archaeological feature discovered at the Cadfael site (NiNg-17) on southeastern Victoria Island. TWO large boulders apparently served as anvil stones on which quartzite cobbleswere fractured. Lithic debris remained in situ on and around the boulders, preserving the materials and spatial arrangements as abandoned by the last flintknappers. Analysis ofone boulder and the associated artifacts demon- strates that a bipolar technology was employed to split cobbles, presumably to obtain large flakes for use as, or for making into, tools. As far as is known, no similar features have been reported in the literature on the Canadian Arctic, although potential candidates exist on Baffin Island and at Great Bear Lake. The age and cultural affiliation of the Cadfael site anvil boulders are undetermined; however an association with the Late Dorset culture, dating to about lo00 years ago, seemsmost likely. Deux grosses pierres y auraient apparemment servies d’enclumes où l’on aurait cassé des galets de quartzite. Les débris lithiques étaient restés in situ sur et autour des grosses roches, préservant ainsi le materiel et les arrangements spatiaux tels qu’abandonnés par les derniers artisans de la pierre. -

An Aerial Survey of Caribou On
AN AERIAL SURVEY OF CARIBOU ON WESTERN VICTORIA ISLAND (5–17 JUNE 1994) JOHN S. X1A 3S8 2000 FILE REPORT NO. 128 iii ABSTRACT Concerns over the sharp decline in numbers of the Minto Inlet caribou herd on northwest Victoria Island and increased hunting pressure on the Dolphin and Union caribou herd on southwestern Victoria Island prompted a survey of western Victoria Island. We used two fixed-wing aircraft and flew a systematic strip transect survey of western Victoria Island in June 1994. Our objectives were two-fold: 1) to determine the abundance of caribou in northwest Victoria Island (Minto Inlet calving area), and 2) to delineate the calving distribution of caribou on southwestern Victoria Island (Dolphin and Union calving area), re- survey any high density areas, and estimate population size based on the calving ground survey. We conducted the survey from 5–16 June 1994. The area surveyed was 138 185 km² in size and accounted for ca. 63% of the entire land area of Victoria Island. We estimated a total of 14 539 ± 1015 (SE) caribou on western Victoria Island at an overall density of 0.11 caribou / km2. Although our survey area included the entire known seasonal range of the Minto Inlet herd, we only observed 4 caribou on-transect in that area. Our results corroborated previous aerial surveys (March 1992, March 1993 and June 1993) where few caribou were observed and added confirmation to the decline of the Minto Inlet herd. -

Dolphin and Union Caribou Herd Status and Trend

Box 377 Kugluktuk, NU X0B 0E0 2Integrated Ecological Research, Nelson, BC NUNAVUT DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT WILDLIFE RESEARCH SECTION KUGLUKTUK, NU Executive Summary Dolphin and Union (DU) Caribou (Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus x pearyi) have a large distribution covering Victoria Island (Nunavut and Northwest Territory) and the northern region of the Canadian mainland in Nunavut. The DU Caribou calve and summer on Victoria Island, resulting in the sharing of the northwestern extents of their seasonal ranges with Peary Caribou (Rangifer tarandus pearyi). While Peary Caribou winter on Victoria Island, the DU Caribou generally display migratory behavior by crossing the sea-ice of the Coronation Gulf to winter on the Canadian mainland. Once on the mainland, DU caribou over-winter with other tundra- wintering caribou in the eastern part of their winter range. In addition to this specific movement and seasonal range, the DU Caribou can also be distinguished, with certainty, genetically from other caribou herds (Peary Caribou and Barren-ground Caribou), highlighting the conservation importance of this herd. A coastal survey methodology, originally developed by Nishi (2004), has been used to estimate the DU caribou since 1997 as they physically separate from the Peary caribou in the fall. This methodology is based on hunter observations and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit of Dolphin and Union Caribou gathering during rut into a narrow band on the southern coastline of Victoria Island. -

Evidence was obtained at the esterase locus supporting the genetic isolation of two temporally distinct spawning populations of charr in Windermere. Significant differences at the transferrin and esterase loci between the Coniston population of charr and the populations found in Ennerdale Water and Windermere were thought to be due to genetic drift following severe reduction in the effective population size in Coniston water. 1. INTRODUCTION The Arctic charr (Salvilinus alpinus L.) has a circumpolar distribution in the northern hemisphere. The populations in the British Isles are confined to isolated lakes in Wales, Cumbria, Ireland and Scotland. Charr north of latitude 65°N are anadromous but this behaviour has been lost in southerly populations. This paper describes an investigation of biochemical polymorphism of the isozyme products of two loci, serum transferrin and serum esterase, in charr populations from three Cumbrian lakes—Windermere, Ennerdale Water and Coniston Water (fig. 1). Electrophoretic methods applied to tissue extracts have been employed by several workers in an attempt to clarify the "species complex" in Sal- velinus alpinus and to investigate interrelationships between charr popula- tions (Nyman, 1972; Henricson and Nyman, 1976; Child, 1977; Klemetsen and Grotnes, 1980). -

198 13. Repulse Bay. This is an important summer area for seals (Canadian Wildlife Service 1972) and a primary seal-hunting area for Repulse Bay. 14. Roes Welcome Sound. This is an important concentration area for ringed seals and an important hunting area for Repulse Bay. Marine traffic, materials staging, and construction of the crossing could displace seals or degrade their habitat. 15. Southampton-Coats Island. The southern coastal area of Southampton Island is an important concentration area for ringed seals and is the primary ringed and bearded seal hunting area for the Coral Harbour Inuit. Fisher and Evans Straits and all coasts of Coats Island are important seal-hunting areas in late summer and early fall. Marine traffic, materials staging, and construction of the crossing could displace seals or degrade their habitat. 16.7.2 Communities Affected Communities that could be affected by impacts on seal populations are Resolute and, to a lesser degree, Spence Bay, Chesterfield Inlet, and Gjoa Haven. Effects on Arctic Bay would be minor. Coral Harbour and Repulse Bay could be affected if the Quebec route were chosen. Seal meat makes up the most important part of the diet in Resolute, Spence Bay, Coral Harbour, Repulse Bay, and Arctic Bay. It is a secondary, but still important food in Chesterfield Inlet and Gjoa Haven. Seal skins are an important source of income for Spence Bay, Resolute, Coral Harbour, Repulse Bay, and Arctic Bay and a less important income source for Chesterfield Inlet and Gjoa Haven. 16.7.3 Data Gaps Major data gaps concerning impacts on seal populations are: 1. -

Diamondiferous Kimberlites on Victoria Island, Canada: a Northern Extension of the Slave Craton
DIAMONDIFEROUS KIMBERLITES ON VICTORIA ISLAND, CANADA: A NORTHERN EXTENSION OF THE SLAVE CRATON Mark Kolebaba1, George Read2, Bernard Kahlert1 and Dave Kelsch1, 1 Diamonds North Resources Ltd, Canada; 2 Canabrava Diamond Corporation, Canada basalt (Natkusiak Formation 723 Ma) and INTRODUCTION agglomerate which make up the Shaler Mountains that are intruded by gabbro sills. The lower sandstone and gabbro units of the Shaler Group are also found Victoria Island, located in the Northwest Territories along the southern coast of Victoria Island, and as and Nunavut in the High Arctic of Canada (Figure 1) small inliers south of Washburn Lake. has been a diamond exploration target since 1993 when exploration companies recognized the possibility Archean age rocks beneath the eastern half of Victoria Island under thin Paleozoic carbonate cover. Much evidence has been collected through work since 1993 that suggests Victoria Island has the potential to become a world-class diamond-producing district. Recent exploration efforts have identified kimberlites with high diamond counts and robust diamond size distributions trending toward large 1 to 2 mm stones from small kimberlite samples. Supportive mineral chemistry including major oxides and trace element analyses suggests a cool geotherm, presence of potential peridotitic diamond sources and a strong diamond bearing eclogite signature. GEOLOGY Regional magnetics indicate the basement rocks have been intruded by NW-SE trending Mackenzie (1270 Archean rocks exist in the eastern half of Victoria Ma) and Franklin (720 Ma) diabase dykes and a Island. Paleozoic sediments including dolomite, previously undocumented north-south trending minor limestone, sandstone and shale of the Arctic diabase dyke system dated at 425 Ma (Diamonds Platform have been preserved within post- North Internal Report, 1999). -
